I've been planning to buy an SUV, and particularly RX 300. A colleague of mine just showed me one he's helping his brother to sell.

The interiors aren't that bad. The mileage is somewhere around 194000.

He wants to sell at at N1.55 million. Is it a good one? See Pictures.

Don't buy it. What you see there is in mileage, and that means this SUV has done more than 240000Kilometres. I don't know about you but with all the history of gearbox and engine wahala 'OFTEN ASSOCIATED' with the RX 300, I wouldn't dare give it a thought much less buy it!

My opinion though

Seriously, I do not know much about cars. I've been using one for over 3 years.

I really appreciate your input. To the naive like me, I too am worried about the mileage.

Didn't even know the RX 300 have such an atrocious history. They're everywhere in PH.

Do you approve my buying it? Is it worth it?

The mileage might be a little high, but it is expected for a 15 year old car. At least they didn't roll back the odometer and u know what u are buying. Majority of the tokunbo ones sold around already have their odometer rolled back. In fact most of the dealers I know don't put heir cars up for sale until they roll back their odometer and sold to unsuspecting buyers.

OP, u can lower the price if u have bargaining power. If u can do a vin check and it comes out clean buy it, it is a good car. The high mileage doesn't really matter especially if it was used mostly for highway driving. You can imagine a 1999 car having a mileage of less than 100k, how is that even possible?

Thanks a lot for taking out time to educate me. I'll keep ALL your points to heart.

I doubt he will go any further down on the price.

Besides, how do one do VIN check?

You should cut down your negotiation to 1.2m - 1.3m for this particular ride.
Clean outwardly tho

There is nothing wrong with the mileage bro..the most important is the condition of the engine.. I've seen so called low mileage cars with engine palava...I will appreciate a car having a true odometer reading anyday anytime

Moreover you should try bring d price down to like 1.250 - 1.3.. best of luck

I work with Toyota and Lexus, and I'm not aware of any engine or transmission issues peculiar to the a Lexus RX300 series. Even with well over 300,000 miles on the odometer, they're still running strong.

Any issues that may arise are most likely when these SUV's arrive in Nigeria. Poor maintenance, miserly owners, wrong fluids, bad mechanics etc. I can go on and on.

The average Nigerian wants to run an SUV on Kia Picanto money. Well, it doesn't work. Plus a lack of mechanical sympathy when driving, will soon reduce even the most robust vehicles to a pile of rubble.

Is this particular SUV worth 1.55 million NGN? Possibly. I have no idea. I know shipping SUV's is not cheap. Unlike regular cars, price is based upon dimensions and weight. Add clearing, the LHD conversion, the actual cost of the truck, and it all adds up. Then there's the added profit for the seller.

You already have the UK registration number plate, if you can get hold of a previous MOT certificate, the mileage and certain test-points could be checked.
Is this an original LHD or converted LHD?

It looks like a good car, but there are some discrepancies. I think the VIN should be posted here. It is showing as a silver car, yet the SUV shown here is clearly metallic blue...

Because the car glitters doesn't mean it should go for 1.55m. There's a reason why that 2002 Rx goes for the price quoted.
Negotiating between 1.2m and 1.3m doesn't mean that's the final price he will purchase it.
It's just a benchmark for the OP.

I do no place too much emphasis on physical aesthetics.
Re: Is This Car Worth N1.55 Million? See Pictures. by Nobody: 1:19pm On Jan 18, 2015
This could possibly be an original LHD with a shady past. With the assumed ID of a straight RHD. I guess a VIN will help here, as well as a photograph of the actual VIN stamped into the body.

On a Lexus, it's either under a plastic cover in front of the driver's seat, (on the floor) or stamped into the firewall. It MAY also be on a metal tag on the leading edge of the dash, visible from the outside at the base of the screen.

Good to know. Get someone to help check the car thoroughly and steal the car if you are cool with the price. There's no harm in negotiating a fixed price wink

Can anyone confirm if this particular Lexus RX300 is dual fuel? As in the engine runs on gasoline and LPG? Again, a photograph of the engine bay will confirm or refute.
