I see nothing wrong with the facilities except for zero maintenance culture of an average Nigerian. ( I stand to be corrected); and it is not the job of any country's president to clean and fix toliets and conveyor belts. I think all Airports should be privatized. USA has over 2,000 airports and 0ver 90% of them apart from military airports are privately owned and government only regulates.

^^^You guys make me laugh wallahi!

From the pics you see, it's obvious the structures are in place....the problem now being that of maintenance! It's been almost a year now since you lot bullied GEJ into removing her from office, yet you expect the airport facilities to still be as she left them!?

If you're looking for anyone to blame, blame the immediate past acting minister and current minister of aviation!

This kind of argument makes me laugh. Will Princess Stella Oduah be aviation minister forever? Or is a ministerial position a family heirloom? Should we not be more concerned with building institutions? Did she not leave the ministry to pursue her political career in the same way Obanikoro and Labaran Maku did?
Re: The Bad State Of Murtala Muhammed International Airport by Hila12(m): 3:12pm On Jan 19, 2015
The poor maintenance of public facilities is imminent so long as no established system/mechanisms are put in place by the government. No one is endorsing GEJ or GMB here, but a credible government that can yearn to needs of it’s people (with proof); we can’t achieve this without the right maintenance mechanisms put in place (and monitored as well) . We are not talking about airports in less commercial states (no offense meant to these states), but the most popular and commercial airport in Nigeria; it’s rather a shame! The government condones far too many avoidable lapses (deliberate and selfishly) under it’s nose. 54 years since independence and we still discussing how to maintain toilets and how to power elevators, or worse still, how to stop extortion in airports. These are all self inflicted pain by a nation that robs and bleeds itself every passing day.

There are no special airports for the presidency, GEJ and his entourage transit from the same airports as you and me – It’s rather a shame that the government with all the resources and know-how at it's disposal cannot effectively demonstrate concern in the welfare and aftercare of it’s citizens. For God’s sake, flight/travels are meant to be leisure activities and not a ‘walk in wilderness’.

I leave it on this note!

At that airport-

1. When it rains the roofs leak like a tap. FAAN officials keep giant basins on the abestos to hide the shame.
2. The air conditioning in the arrival and departure halls are faulty, making the whole place hot and uncomfortable.
3. The conveyor belts are faulty and break down at regular intervals. This leads to thieves breaking and pilfering passengers luggage and bags.
In summary, the minister who claimed to have renovated that airport needs to be arrested and jailed.

@Dele Momodu..Are you going to blame GEJ for this as well cos if you do, i'll call you a very very biased journalist and you will risk soiling your own reputation in the process.
I've had the privilege of using MMA since the late 80's. And the last time i remember it being in its original state of glory was before 1994.
MMA has been deteriorating after then. Tell me how many govts we've had in between? Even under OBJ's tenure, it was not better. At some point all the ACs and escalators weren't working (yes under OBJ - your godfather wannabe)..remember?

I'm not excusing GEJ but the state of MMA is typical of Nigeria's way of managing infrastructure... poor maintenance. And yes Dele, this includes you and I and every other Nigerian.

In your pictures, i saw mops and ladders all around, i saw dirty toilets etc, Dele Momodu i ask you, is that the work of a president? Those things were left lying untidy by lagosians like you and I. What message did you send to them?
What is the work of Nahco- What is the work of Nigeria Airport Authority-whatever they are called nowadays? Who are the contractors responsible for cleaning the airport?
Do they have yearly allocation to take care of the airport? what are they doing with it? this is where you should focus on to help Nigerians understand who is fooling who. we are hoping for a Nigeria with freedom of press so that every Nigerian can see what the govt. and its establishments do with yearly allocations and budgets but you taking sides in all you biased write ups almost makes this laughable.

I've admired some of your write ups but please stop being biased. And just so you know, I don't support either GEJ (a clueless weak individual) or GMB (a do or die politician). They are both robbers and unfit to rule in my opinion.

I wonder when Nigerian youths will wake up and realise that the more they follow these so called political godfathers e.g. OBJ, Tinubu, IBB, and who else..you name them... they will always get the same old same. Bunch of criminals rebranding their party names, installing stooges as Governors and Presidents while their personal wealth keeps multiplying. Is this hard to see? Common sense...

but there you hear youths of APC in violent clash with with youths of PDP and all stupid sickening stories. If you wonder why these guys are not creating jobs for you it's because they need jobless people to fight for their elections...

*Mr President, this is the new conveyor belt sold to Nigeria at God knows how much

*Mr President, I know leaders hardly know the truth but as a patriot I want you to see the eyesore of our airport!

*Mr President, believe it or not sir, this is the new airport extension in such ugly grandeur that’s being trumpeted as Transformation

Exactly why the power sector needed privatization. Nigeria lacks good maintenance culture. Especially the public sector.
Unfortunately if this is not reported, or even escalated the President won't know about it.
Not that these things don't happen elsewhere, but they are maintained regularly.

I will be the first to agree with you that this is as a result of our general lack of a maintenance culture. However, this is were leadership is key. The President uses the airport from time to time. It is not enough to stroll through VIP every time. Or just listen to false reports that they cook up for you. Sometimes a leader needs to catch his "staff" unawares sometimes. Pay a surprise visit. Catch people of guard. And where they are lacking, don't hesitate to apply sanctions. The same principles that apply within the family and in business apply in governance. If you leave people to misbehave without rein, this is what you get.

Most people have luggage of less than 30kg but Nigerians must have HUGE bags of over 100kg.
Then complain because conveyor breaks down.

because people liked this comment you would ordinarily assume you made one bit of sense, frankly, you didn't. was it after the belts were built that nigeeians found their love for extra luggage? what then is the essence of planning and budgeting? why didnt they build it in accordance to nigeeian needs? or is the airport not meant for nigerians?

Stupid Naija mentality and Blame game! Airlines have weight limit of 23kg per luggage AND can take up 100kg and most baggage carousels are designed to carry such load. It's either they used substandard product or "wanted" travellers to carry less load. Mind you this is an intl airport where all traveler from around the world land.

Nigerians like u like to delude yourselves. i f he doesn't report this to the presisent, who else should he have reported to? there are mops and bla bla bla...... when you gi to an eatery or restaurant, do u go to theur kitchen to wash plates or you call the attention of the owner who in turn calls his employees to do the needful? whats wrong in calling on the president to instruct an institution under his control to call the authorities within the airport to order? or is it not a federal airport again?

I will take it that you do not know what you are saying. There is a cleaning contract in every airport. The cleaners are not even direct employers of government. And the cleaning company has hierarchies, supervisors, management and etc. And the management is answerable to the direct hirer which is the Airport Management. If there is a query to be issued, it goes directly to the Airport management. You demean the office of even a Governor if you motioned that a governor failed to see the state of the airport toilet, but this is a country that the populace believe every business of street cleaning is the duty of a President and a governor has no role.

Illiteracy and ignorance will incinerate this country someday. After all people are massively campaigning for an ancestor that has no basic educational qualification to lead them. I like your line of argument. However, ask yourself; if you were appointed MD/ CEO of a multinational and you swung into action to release funds for renovation and stuff through the help of your trusted manager. Then after 6 months everything is falling apart simply because your manager left for another company. What will you tell the board? "Oh it's not my fault. It's the cleaning agency we use. They are very sloppy." They are not going to listen to that. Or would you agree that Stephen Keshi has no blame in the performance of the Eagles even though we all know the FA and the players have their own fault?

Nigeria is a peculiar country. We've not gotten to the point where people, especially those in the public sector, know that they must do their jobs or get booted out. This is why anyone that will lead this country must have a more hands on approach until proper maintenance becomes a culture.
