Niger Delta oil has been useless so far. It has not developed Nigeria, it has not developed the people of the region and it might bring great destruction to its people if they blackmail Nigeria with it. Look at the map carefully before boasting. This is great destruction these militants are calling for upon their land, apart from the fact that there is no unity. The Itsekiri will never join the Ijaw and the Kalahari will war with Nembe, even Bakassi region has its share of internal squabbles. My advice to ND people, take out the militants before they destroy their region for you and wipe out the middle class.

The actual value of the oil to Nigeria TODAY @ 2 million barrels daily @$50 barrel(it is LESS) is 100x365 = $36.5 billion .

According to GEJ Nigeria's economy is $500 billion ie oil is 7.3 % of our economy. It is important but not THAT important we will survive with it

Bear in mind that just a few months ago the price was double what it is and so the price crash means we have lost 7.3 % almost overnight. No one can deny that it is not important but I think the likes of Asari overrate how important oil is to us.
In 2013 Nigerians in Diaspora remitted over $20 billion back home. So let us put things in perspective.

I will say one thing about that $36.5 billion figure above. Anyone who has done business can relate to this; $36.5 is oil revenue. What is the cost of production i.e how much does it cost to bring one barrel of oil out of the ground and what is the profit

Revenue- Expenses . How much does the oil company e.g Mobil take when we analyse all of this we come to realise that oil is important to a very tiny fraction of Nigerians and no where near as big a deal as these Creek rats think. FACTS AND FIGURES not RANTINGS

It is you that is dumb. The oil companies take about $8B-) from Nigeria to produce the 2million barrels we are boasting of. So the real ROI is different from what you see. I think our profit from the JV business from all the cheating they are cheating us is actually about 60% of each barrel price. Now most of the production is moving offshore so most Niger Delta people cannot even touch the production there. However, generally oil is a good foreign exchange earner but is a very unimportant contributor to GDP, ordinary fishing employs more people.

One other interesting thing 90% of oil industry employees and contractors are from the South South. So I really want to see this shutdown of oil production and its effect on the people of the Niger delta. I am dying to see starving Ijaw babies, hungry and beautiful Urhobo women and sexy but poor Itsekiri ladies let loose upon Nigeria.

On the other hand SS people get matured in their thinking, work hard, vote in the right people, make theology resources work for them and say the truth to corrupt and clueless leaders. Don't start something that God has not ordained like he ordained Good luck Jonathan that he has also decided to remove from office.

Bros No insult nau, why dont you counter that well written and potentially factual piece?

If the gross revenue is apprx $40B dollars as the guy stated surely you'd expect the net revenue to be in the 40 - 50% mark which means the oil is not as important as most Nigerians think. As for me I remitted over $50k last year alone.

Don't mind the guy, Diaspora funds remittances are going to hit close to $25bn, the oil will barely earn $15bbm.
The low oil prices is going to at least 3.5 years. Most of the production is now offshore and they are PSCs so Nigeria gets tidy royalties. Th oil majors have sold all the onshore production to oil Nigerian oil companies owned by mostly southerners. You can confirm this if you want. Th ND oil is not a commodity you can blackmail Nigeria with anymore. That ship has sailed. Look forward from 2015 and even most power generation is going to come from Enugu' s coal and NorthEast hydroelectric dams instead of natural gas, Nigeria has not had three months uninterrupted natural gas supply to power plants because of these people we pay billions every year to secure the pipelines. They have wrecked the SS president' s power generation target upon all the money he has spent. Jonathan did nothing about coal in the SE but Buhari has promised to fix that. Let AS people make Tom Polo, Asari and Boyloaf their champions and then they can drink their oil, other regions are going to develop their young and make them ready to compete globally.

^^^^ As long as oil still accounts for over 90% of Nigeria's revenue, all those epistles up there are pretty meaningless. GDP doesn't build roads or bridges.
A state governor does not pay his civil servants their salaries by merely looking at those GDP figures, oil money pays those salaries, oil money builds both state and Federal roads.
Talking about GDP figures, Agriculture takes a good chunk of the GDP, what provides subsidized/free fertilizers for farmers? Oil money. What provides irrigation for farmers? Oil money. What builds the roads and railways through which those farm products are distributed? Oil money.
Let's be realistic, how many small scale businesses can survive without oil money in Nigeria today? How will civil servants be able to patronize those businesses if their salary (which comes from oil money) isn't paid?
How many businesses in Port Harcourt will survive without the oil money in the city?
Moving to the telecoms sector, how many civil servants will buy phones or sim cards or regular recharge cards if their oil money salaries aren't paid? How many small business owners will do the same if business isn't moving because of lack of oil money in town?
When you look at it realistically, every other sector revolves around oil no matter how unrelated you might think they are.
So the truth is that oil is still extremely important in Nigeria, it definitely isn't an ideal situation to be in.....but it is the truth.
