10 Unique Things That Are Common In Lagos by Faibuhari: 2:37pm On Feb 26, 2015
Lagos is a *crazy* city situated right next to and inside the Atlantic Ocean…Hello!... It is a city of action. There is commotion as everyone is on the move (some of the people may not even know where exactly they are going, but that doesn’t deter them from being in a hurry).
In furtherance of the Spirit of Lagos, I would like to share some funny things that happen only in Lagos and which make Lagosians unique.

1. Fighting passenger/pick pockets

The early morning rush in Lagos to board a bus is a funny experience. Passengers fight and pick pockets do their brisk business, as the conductor stands aside abusing and cursing passengers not to spoil his rickety door.

2. No change

Conductors remind passengers to hold their *Change*.  This scenario happens in all major bus-stop in Lagos. Sometimes the conductor says he has no * change*. Dat tin dey pain me! You will be joined or *married* off to someone by the conductor in order for th two of you to sort youselves out.

3. Crazy traffic

The kind of traffic experienced in Lagos is *maybe* the worst in Africa. There are some roads in Lagos where traffic is so congested that people sleep in the bus and when they get to their bus stop, they alight and turn back to start going back to work.  Roads like Ikororodu, Ikotun, Apapa, and Mile 2 are living examples.

4. Free transport for law enforcement agents

It’s only in Lagos where law enforcement agents board vehicles without paying because their presence allows the driver to break traffic rules and to minimise money collected by *agbero*. The police, army, navy, air force, Man O war, and LASTMA are all beneficiaries. KAI officials are asked to pay because *bus no dey cross main road*

5. Professional/clean beggars

It’s only in Lagos where a well-dressed man will walk up to you and tell you that he is stranded; he doesn't have transport fare. Don't mind him, we call them *professional beggars* here. They will tell you heart rendering stories like they are going for an interview. They are everywhere in Lagos.

6. Running after the bus

It’s only in Lagos where people run after a bus to board and alight when the bus is still in motion. It’s called survival of the fittest. In Lagos, we see it as normal because you need to be agile and strong to deal with the hassles of Lagos.

7. *Fashola is working*

Don’t get shocked! You got it right.
Don't pray for rain to fall in Lagos.  It’s either your street or house will be flooded, or you might not even get home because of traffic. In Lagos we call those floods *Fashola is working*.

8. Everyone can eat

In Lagos, no matter the amount of money you have you will eat. Man must live nah!  You will still see a place where you can buy rice and meat #100, just visit the local iya basira stand and you will eat and smile on.

9. *Expensive* tenants

It’s mostly in Lagos where you will see someone driving a very expensive car, but he is still a tenant. Maybe they don't want to build their own or the car is just for show off or they are drivers or they can't afford living in some areas where their money can get them a good estate.

10. Early commuters

Some people leave their houses as early as 3 a.m. Don’t mind the fact that they might have gotten to the house at 12 a.m. So they just spend 3 hours at home.

Feel free to add yours.

Eko akete...Ilu ogbon

You need to be very smart in Lagos else you'll be outsmarted.

The state you can drive through the 3rd mainland bridge in 10mins without traffic and 4hrs or more when there's traffic.

Lol @ rich tennants that one is so common. Reminds me of a tenant like that in ikoyi that rides a hyundai equus with about 2 other exotic SUV's and works with a very popular oil company yet he's a tenant.
How about the proven fact that 89.9% of Lagosians with PVC's are APC loyalist and will stop at nothing to vote out the clueless administration of GEJ. Everyone here wants change.
