OP hit the nail on the head.
No ibo family raise their children in ibo language nowadays. Its really hurtful. 50years is even too much. If nothing is done to salvage the situation, our language will go extinct.
This is one of the reasons why I rep Phyno and Ada Mbano

Dalu. But it is Igbo and not Ibo,Ibo is actually a derogatory word oda tribes uses to address us, pls dont accept that. We are Igbos not Ibos.

YOU are lying there is no south eastern town/city that use English as their major communication tool... if you speak English there you will Likely be responded back 2 in English. note most people are not fluent in English especially in commercial areas they will likely mix Igbo with English if you engage them in a long conversation in English but will speak flawlessly in Igbo... You got a point there shaa. And it's compounded by the fact that pidgin is now the unofficial lingua franca of Nigeria. Every market woman can speak it, especially in the south.

Re: Igbo Language And Its Downward Trend by inspbado(m): 11:35pm On Mar 03, 2015
in my own opinion, I think the solution to first solving this problem is identifying your cultural identity and embracing it fully. I'm yoruba and you hardly see a yoruba person bear a foreign name. We bear our indigenous names with pride. In fact nowadays, most yoruba parents specifically look for "conk" yoruba names to give their child(ren) at birth, hardly do you see a yoruba man bear a foreign name. In my family(immediate and extended) none of us has foreign middle names as it is the usual practice amongst a lot of family in our contemporary society. However, same cannot be said of many igbo folks; you see igbo men and women proudly bear Anglicized names (peter, Ben, Paul, Catherine etc) and many would even "funklize" their names to sound Behind eg "genny" "chinny" "emmy"etc. And sorry to say this( because it might come across as being patronising or insulting, but please I mean no offence) but many igbo folks are insecure. I know of one igbo lady, she works in a top bank in Lagos, she speaks yoruba more than I do and refers to fellow igbos as "those people"!!! Another example was when I was in the university in Ogun state, I knew this guy nicknamed "sienna" it was in my final year that I got to know he was igbo. The darn guy spoke yoruba and had yoruba mannerisms like no other. And to cap it all, he couldn't speak one word of igbo to save his life!! So I really think the igbos should embrace their cultural identity more, although that's not to say they should isolate themselves from other cultures, but then, you've to be proud of who you are and where you come from. Shalom (sorry for the long epistle smiley

My brother thank you for this. In 50 yrs time, most of us on this tread now will still be living, millions of children in igboland today that don't know come will still be leaving. So how will the language go extinct.
The entire igbo land speaks igbo on daily bases, Every state in south east speak igbo as language of daily communication In markets, schools, streets, every were.
More than 80% of igbos live in igbo land within ss and se nigeria and speaks igbo on daily bases.
Igbo will never go extinct.

You people can believe what ever the white man tells them thats bussiness,

Don't mind these confused people. Igbos who left the shores of Nigeria at 14 yrs, but are now over 50yrs are still speaking complete Igbo. The mixing of English before he left and 35yr spent out side hasn't altered a thing.

Err, it's rather complicated...

Us Ukwuani are going through some major league identity crisis. We are divided as to where we truly belong. While a lot of folks like my brethren don't want to be identified as igbo, others have accepted that Ukwuani are igbos.

But me, where do I think I belong? Well, we're for the most part, Igbo in origin.

Forgive my prying, but what's your home town in Ukwuani? I only ask because one Revd Okolugbo whose work I came across not so long ago, claimed that Ukwuani communities are for the most part Bini in origin.
