My Father sent his mum packing from the house after she had blatantly refused to allow his new wife then (my mum) have any peace at home. Infact one day my grandma came from the village with a girl and started evicting my mum from the house. Needless to say my mum stood her ground and threw my grandma out of the house with the girl. When my dad returned from work and saw his mum outside, he found out what happened, gave her money to go find a hotel to stay the night and return to the village with an instruction not to return until she was ready to respect and accept his wife.

Needless to say, but after many years (over 6 years) of no communication, they reconciled and became the best of friends and became even closer than my Dad was to her.

I remember when I went through a serious fight with my mum and went to my Dad to mediate, he said something to me that I would never forget; He said I know your mum is wrong and I have told her in my own way, but if you expect me to take sides with you on this matter against my wife then you are stupider than I would have thought. My dad always made it clear that in every situation, his wife comes first even before us his kids.

That is the same mantra I hold till this day. Find a good woman and marry her and hold her close to your heart. Protect her with all you have against everyone and everything including yourself and even your kids. Never make your wife feel like she is an outsider, never take sides with anybody against her. Never reprimand her in the presence of a third party. Treat her like you would treat yourself as she is an extension of you not a third party.

Even my mother knows she can't touch my wife.

Now, this is just plain wrong. Instead of countering @MadCow's argument with superior points, all yhu do is measure balls and d1cks and denigerate his family. I hope yhu're not married because if yhu really act this way in real life, even yhur mum should be wary of yhu, leave all the NL show of love. Funnily enough, I showed her this post this evening. She reasons alongside @MadCow's assertion. She even said that if the man dares drive his wife on account of this issue for a day, that he has lost control of his home forever, his mother may as well move in and take over headship of the home. As I mentioned to @Freecocoa, let's remove the hierachy and family ties and treat this case as between two feuding women. Judge it from that angle and advise OP therefrom.

The reason why I think the wife takes greater blame.

MIL might have gotten offended, thinking "how can this small girl be insulting me like this" and gave DIL a resounding slap, DIL being the " be you who, I no send" type showed mama say she doesn't give a hoot., this type of people are hardly innocent.

The truth is that, no matter how much one's parents respects them, there can and always is a time when they expect you to recognize authority, it is a very good quality everyone should have, DIL doesn't seem like someone to make excuses for in cases like this.

For MIL to go straight to take pictures doesn't mean she's bossy, my mum is one of the gentlest and most humble people I know, her kind of humility even pisses us off sometimes(no exaggeration) yet she will do something like take the pictures because she's genuinely happy, DIL could easily get those pictures back, she is not in any way supposed to fight because of it, an oppressed person doesn't behave this way.

What they might lose? Haha! If you believe your remedy is better than Madcow's, then I must protest. A married man cannot afford to think like just any man, not if he wants peace in his home. Your solution solves nothing, don't expect to have a happy marriage if you do not care to consider your wife's (or mother's) happiness by sucking in your pride and delving deeper into the issues.

In this case, the mother had no right to slap another woman in her own house for her own belongings; use your discernment, this was wrong. Both should be told of what you perceived to be their errors, but you'd be wrong to send your wife away from her home due to the actions initiated by your mother (who will comfortably return to her home). That is not justice and it will only beget resentment, and wifey'd wish she punched, not scratched! Trust me, ain't no one looking to be friends after that

Had a thorough thought concerning this MIL issue and came to a conclusion that people are product of their upbringing & experience ( I've said that before on Male teacher thread too) ... Example; I Read a post on this same thread about how the poster's Father stopped relation with his mother (poster's grandma) because she had a heated altercation with poster's mom. His father never spoke to none of his relatives including his mother, till his mother's passing ( no money for food , nothing from a son you raised & go hungry for to pay his tuition) .. What advice do you expect from such person Biko?
