Despite an Insurgency, we attracted 32 Car assembly plants and car component manufacturers in 2 years.

If we produced 40,000 megawatts we would in the Top 10 world's largest economies with double digit growth figures.

At our current output, we are the worlds 21st largest economy.

Nope, most of Nigeria's Foreign exchange earnings, Income accounts for 69% of F.G.N's revenue. Nigeria is also one of the world's most under-taxed Nation.

Nigeria and the liberation of Africa[edit]

Upon gaining independence, Nigeria quickly committed itself to opposing white minority governments. Nigeria backed the African National Congress (ANC) by taking a committed tough line with regard to the South African government and their military actions in southern Africa. Nigeria was also a founding member of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU, now the African Union), and has tremendous influence in West Africa and Africa on the whole. Nigeria has additionally founded regional cooperative efforts in West Africa, functioning as standard-bearer for ECOWAS and ECOMOG, economic and military organisations, respectively.

Similarly, when civil war broke out in Angola after the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975, Nigeria mobilised its diplomatic influence in Africa in support of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). That support helped tip the balance in their favour, which led to OAU recognition of the MPLA over the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola.

Nigeria extended diplomatic support to another Marxist cause, Sam Nujoma's Southwest Africa People's Organization in Namibia, to stall the apartheid South African-installed government there. In 1977, the new General Olusegun Obasanjo's military regime donated $20 million to the Zimbabwean movement against the government of Rhodesia. Nigeria also sent military equipment to Mozambique to help the newly independent country suppress the South African-backed Mozambican National Resistance guerrillas. Although officially denied by the Nigerian government, Nigeria is known to have also provided secret military training at the Kaduna first mechanised army division and provided other material support to Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe's guerrilla forces during the Rhodesian Bush War (Renamed Zimbabwe in 1979) against the white minority rule of Prime Minister Ian Douglas Smith, which was backed by the government of South Africa.

Although her economy and technology could not have supported it, Nigeria announced to a bewildered international community that she was launching a nuclear programme of "unlimited scope" of her own. To demonstrate her seriousness against multi-national companies in Nigeria that violated the economic/trade embargo on the South African regime, the local operations of Barclays Bank was nationalised after that bank ignored the strong protests by Nigeria urging it not to buy the South African government bond.

Nigeria also nationalised the British Petroleum (BP) for supplying oil to South Africa. In 1982, the Alhaji Shehu Shagari government urged the visiting Pontiff Pope John Paul II to grant audience to the leaders of Southern Africa guerrilla organisations Oliver Tambo of the ANC and Sam Nujoma of SWAPO....

we helped in liberating the BLACKS IN SA...

No country is perfect mate! and I wasn't referring to Nigeria being the 21 largest economy, I was referring the fact that IF you had a 400000 megawatts of power THEN YOU WOULD BE in the top 10 economies.

Then I could also say for ex: IF South Africa can mine more of its natural resources then WE WOULD BE in the top 10 economies.

Both might be theoretically true, but that's as I said only in theory!!

Nigeria has been in the forefront in the establishment and sustaining various continental and regional organizations. For instance, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) established on May 25, 1963, was primarily aimed at achieving two important objectives, namely: to ensure the quick decolonization of the remaining colonies in Africa and secondly to facilitate the rapid socio-economic growth and development of African states. In this respect, Nigeria did a lot in ensuring the implementation of the primary objectives upon which OAU was founded. For instance, in 1975, Nigeria granted the sum of N 13.5 million and military assistance to Angola ’s MPLA and also enlisted diplomatic support for the Angolan government within the O.A.U.; this had greatly accorded recognition to the Angolan government by many African states who were hitherto unwilling to give such recognition.

In addition to this, Nigeria contributed enormously to several liberation movements in the continent. This had therefore greatly contributed towards the political independence of most African countries. For instance, on February 13, 1976, Nigeria donated the sum of two million dollars $2m to South Africa ’s Africa National Congress, ANC, and 500,000 dollars to Namibia ’s South West African People’s Organization, SWAPO. SWAPO was later granted permission to open office in Lagos . At about the same time, the Federal Ministry of Information inaugurated a committee for dissemination of information about the evils of Apartheid. Fundamentally, the committee was to intimate the government with current news and activities of the racist regime in South Africa and advise the government on the best way to approach her anti-Apartheid policies as well as enlighten the public on the situation in South Africa .

That is not all, as the federal government nationalized British assets in Nigeria when the latter chose to continue conducting business with South Africa . Consequently, in March 1978, the federal government directed all its ministries and parastatals to stop dealing with Barclays Bank, owned by Britain . In the same vein, the British Petroleum company (BP) was also nationalized in July 1979. In addition to all these, Lt. General Obasanjo, in December 1976 launched the Southern African Relief Fund. The money collected was sent to Angola , Namibia and South Africa ’s liberation forces.

Similarly, taking into cognizance fundamental role of economic integration among contiguous states and given the very small nature of many West African states in terms of population and economic output, Nigeria , under the leadership of General Yakubu Gowon spearheaded the formation of a 16-member regional integration body – ECOWAS - the treaty of which was signed on May 28, 1975. It is therefore essential to note that the phenomenal contributions made by Nigeria in the two organizations mentioned above have greatly contributed to the economic “prosperity” and political independence of many African countries.

Nigeria Saves N4.2trn On Manufactured Goods Importation In 2012- Aganga

Nigeria has recorded a significant improvement in its import trade figures as it saved N4.2tn in 2012 owing to a decrease in the importation of manufactured goods.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, disclosed this during the opening ceremony of the ministerial session of the National Council on Industry, Trade and Investment, in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday.

Aganga further revealed at the meeting with the theme, ‘Industrialisation as the driver of economic development, revenue diversification and wealth creation,’ that the country saved about N817bn due to a decline in the importation of textile, cement and vegetable oil within the same period.

He said, “In terms of trade, we have done very well. Nigeria’s external trade fell by 4.3 per cent, from N29tn to about N28tn in 2012. However, the good and exciting news is that the fall was as a result of a sharp decrease in the value of import from about N9.8tn to about N5.6tn by the end of 2012. That was a decrease of about 43 per cent in savings of more than N4.2tn, which has gone to the increase in the foreign reserves of our country.

“The last time that we had such a big fall in import, for a country that is largely import dependent, was in 2008; and that fall was about N1tn. This shows in real sense, a decreasing over-reliance on import for domestic consumption and a significant savings on our foreign exchange. That is why foreign exchange is going up.

“Specifically, for vegetable oil production, import fell from about N1tn to about N577bn; textile imports fell from about N190bn to N94bn, representing about 82 per cent decrease; while cement import fell from about N219bn to about N27bn. In total, these three sectors only contributed to more than N817bn to our foreign reserves because we are less dependent on import.”

The minister noted that the country also recorded significant improvement in non-oil revenue earnings within the last seven years with the non-oil sector accounting for 30 per cent of the nation’s revenue earnings in 2012, as against 15.5 per cent recorded in 2005.

He said, “Now, if you look at our exports, the figure has gone up by 15.5 per cent from about N19.4tn to about N22.4tn in 2012. In terms of oil and non-oil revenue, in 2005, oil revenue contributed about 94 per cent of our foreign earnings, while the non-oil sector contributed only six per cent.

“If you look at the same statistics in 2012, the oil sector contributed about 69 per cent while the non-oil sector contributed 30 per cent.”

As part of efforts towards diversifying the nation’s economy, enhance job creation and wealth generation, Aganga said his ministry had begun the implementation of its Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan, based on areas where the country had comparative and competitive advantage

The fact that as many as 5,000 Nigerian troops fought in Angola around 1976-77 may be the most widely-unknown fact in the annals of Nigeria’s very long history of foreign military operations.

In the aftermath of January 1976 OAU summit where General Murtala Muhammed in his timeless “AFRICA HAS COME OF AGE” outing decisively swung the support of the OAU and Africa in favour of the MPLA regime, to the chagrin of their UNITA and FNLA competitors,  the FMG backed up the new MPLA government with N13.5m(US$20m) and sent a squadron of MiG-17 jet fighters in support.

It has now emerged that as many as 5,000 Nigerian troops were deployed to Angola and that they saw action in various theatres across the then war-blighted country.

Writing in an article entitled “MOSCOW’S NEXT TARGET IN AFRICA;Paying the Price for Angola“, Robert Moss clearly indicates that ….

QUOTE:

“The Nigerians are said to be heavily involved in Angola. Western intelligence sources report that Nigerian troops were present at battalion strength when the MPLA and the Cubans pushed south last year.  According to UNITA sources in Paris, the Nigerian strength has since been reinforced.

UNITA sources have tapes of radio intercepts showing that at least 5,000 Nigerian troops have been deployed in Angola. They are operating as far south as Mocamedes, and are also based in Lobito, Luanda and the eastern diamond mining town of Henrique de Carvalho.

UNITA claims to have intercepted radio communications in English (the common language between the Nigerians, the Cubans and the MPLA), in the Ibo, Hausa and Yoruba dialects, and in a form of pidgin Creole…..An intriguing sidelight is that UNITA also claims that a British shipping line played a key role in ferrying Nigerian troops and military supplies to Angola.

Nigeria, rich in oil and boasting an army of some 210,000 men, can clearly afford to be more than rhetorical in its backing for the guerrilla movements of southern Africa.”         END OF QUOTE

Corroborating this report, the world-renowned photo-agency GETTY IMAGES in an archival photo dated 1 January 1977 actually bears a caption which read as follows;

QUOTE:

“Caption: 1977: An Angolan soldier crawls beneath barbed wire trenches during training. Dr Jonas Savimbi and his UNITA movement is doing well in its fight against the ruling MPLA (Movement For The Liberation Of Angola), and its Cuban allies. UNITA claims to control at least half of Angola. In addition to the Cuban forces, Western intelligence sources report that at least 5000 Nigerian troops are also deployed in Angola, on the side of the MPLA. (Photo by Keystone/Getty Images).  Date created: 01 Jan 1977 “.     END OF QUOTE [/b]

The same man once said " keep your Britain and let me keep my Zimbabwe"

The message is clear, South Africans had it enough about foreigners who do not have proper documentation and continue to be used as drug peddlers. Their wrong part is to generalise innocent Africans at large as criminals and drug dealers. Moreover, to raise their hands and kill those innocent foreigners is indeed uncalled for and unfortunate. So, now South Africans want to keep their SA that was once free of drugs and scams.

It is however not a lie that many stranded African brothers in SA are being used to sell drugs to our young children. There is one Nigerian, that I have warned time without numbers to refrain from peddling drugs and sell it to school children. I live very close by the school and this man does not want to listen and does it with impunity. I told him that every dog has its own day.

I thank you.

HOW OLD IS NIGERIA....JUST LET DO SOME ARITHMETICS

Long before 1500 much of modern-Nigeria was divided into states identified with contemporary ethnic groups. These early states included the Yoruba kingdoms, the Igbo Kingdom of Nri, the Benin Kingdom, the Hausa cities, and Nupe. Additionally numerous small states to the west and south of Lake Chad were absorbed or displaced in the course of the expansion of Kanem, which was centered to the northeast of Lake Chad. Bornu, initially the western province of Kanem, became independent in the late 14th century. Other states probably existed but the absence of archaeological data prevents accurate dating. In the south, the earliest Edo state was Igodomigodo which emerged in 900 AD. Despite its relatively small size geographically it is considered the cradle of Edo culture.
