SirShymexx:

You do know that the kids were in tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, no? They committed a lot of atrocities there.
C'mon a lot of those child soldiers were brought to the UK as refugees, and I grew up around a few of them. Too bad, they fell in love with the roads here, and most of them are either jailbirds or in jail right now. You need to hear their stories about the war. They used to crack jokes about Nigerian soldiers. But Nigeria did play a big role in ending that, especially the battle for Freetown. Though the UK likes to take all credit cos the war somewhat ended when the SAS forces and British Army, and the Indian special forces got involved.

I have seen many videos and spoke to a couple of former Child soldiers as well. You aware that was a bloody war where even the Kamajor and Ecomog Soldiers were taking severe casualties and could sometimes not tell who were the RUF rebel kid soldiers and who were civilians. The so called atrocities commited were Sierre leonian, Kamajor and Nigerian Ecomog soldiers and no just Nigerian soldiers. There is no way in War you will not get that sort of thing especially during that time period.

Let me not digress too much though, just point me to where I can get additional info on any recorded atrocities

I don't know why Nigerians always bother about what South African government does or say. The best way is to ignore it, develop the Nigerian society, stop the easy visa program to that nation and look to the West for assistance. This brotherly love sh*t for South Africa is not going to help Nigeria. It is time to do something by looking inward! Zulus are brutes! Why do I care for South African compliments?!

That means the money Nigeria claims to have paid, never reached ANC, it was probably looted.
Why did Mandela the Mandiba and Winnie come to Nigeria to thank the people?

Wow! In that video the environment proves that Nigeria is very underdeveloped nation. Something needs to be done about it urgently. I don't know why the people are so comfortable with it. Those f**king backward leaders just seat there stealing in their primitiveness destroying everything. *Ptui!*

Word. It was a brutal war, so a lot was expected - and the Nigerian soldiers held their own, though they fought mostly on the defensive till the latter part of the war, when the British SAS and Indian special forces got involved. However, getting involved with illegal smuggling of the blood diamonds and raising a generation of kids, in hundreds of thousands (I think the number is that high) with no dads definitely isn't what professional soldiers will be proud of.

Anyway, you can read a summary of the atrocities here: http://www.hrw.org/reports/1999/sierra/SIERLE99-04.htm

Every time I watch the documentary of that war, the infamous and vicious West Side Boys always crack me up. grin Kudos to naij, though.

I'm out!

I am happy there is this kind of record in SA acknowledging the efforts of countries that played appreciable role in their struggle against apartheid!

A lot of people talk with ignorance in this country. Maybe because we have been deceived by our leaders/govt into believing we are what we are not so that they can continue to deceive and rule us with ease !

Let me ask: what did Nigeria do for South Africa, apart from our govt officers/leaders granting interviews to speak against apartheid? What? Did we give them money or send troops to fight for them? Absolutely NOTHING! Yet, we Nigerians always have this stupid sense of entitlement maiking all sorts of irritating noises!

There were many countries in Africa that played bigger role in the struggle to liberate SA, but they dont even brag about it.
Countries like Ghana, under Kwame Nkrumah, played a major role in the fight for freedom and the emancipation of the whole of Africa (including Nigeria). There was a tiime when most of the freedom fighters inAfrica were accomodated in Accra and even employed in the African Affairs Department under Nkrumah.
But hardly do you hear Ghanaians saying ''upon all what Ghana did for South Africa'' anytime they have an issue with South Africa or any other country for that matter!

Some people are crazzy here, that thing was never written yesterday. its been there since the 1990s, Even if you made contribution, it was not enough to put your name on that list. I m shocked people are so emmotional about this little issue. Rwanda, DRC and Burundi are what they are today because of South Africa, but if they dont recognise SA, we not gonna have sleepless night about it. We did our part, then we move on.

You were just deceived guys, money never reached those Anti-apartheid parties. Countries we need to thank without sadow of a doubt, Zambia and Tanzania. Botswana paid heavy price too, though it did not house many anti-apartheid leaders, but they were attacked day in day out by apartheid regime.

Listen.. I guess you can't list Nigeria to the rest. It's ironic, but more importantly, it's morally wrong. Just take a moment and think about what you think we did. Countrymen and women, how the fhuck are we going to set a peoples free when we, the nigerians, were living in bondage under the most brutal and corrupt dictators history has ever recorded? Did you really think we spent $61B to free south Africa from apatheid when we were living under similar conditions and perhaps, even worse? Make una think am clear again

Current nigerian budget is $22Billion for 2015, so back then you could raise $61B, impossible.

That is a big lie. The reason why I don't like Nigerian leaders is that they go with sentiments and primitiveness in addressing development. The west would be a better replacement if Nigerians cannot run them by themselves (looking at Dnagote's achievement - which I doubt anyway).

Most of the countries they listed on the plaque are those nations which almost surrendered to Apartheid government by taking loans from it. Nigeria stood firm not to. Thanks to Tafawa Balewa of Nigeria.

[b]My guy, without 9ja's contribution, d S/A struggle would hav ended up like d other major struggle back then, d Palestinian struggle. If u lived in Nigeria during d apartheid era, u would think apartheid was a nigerian problem. It was almost like a case of crying more than d bereved. Nigeria opened its doors & purse not only to S/A leaders but to leaders of other Southern African countries like Mugabe, Nkomo, Sam Nujoma etc who were regular visitors to lagos. d ANC was headquartered in d Obalende area of lagos while some of its leaders like Thabo Mbeki were exiled in lagos. S/African students studied on scholarships in nigerian universities. In those heady days d liberation of d whole of Southern Africa & particularly ending apartheid was d cornerstone of 9ja's foreign policy. Nigeria was geographically in W /Africa but because of its activism it was d only country outside d borders of south Africa to be made a frontline state, an acknowledgement reserved 4 d states bordering south Africa who were also deeply involved in d struggle. Nigeria wit its new-found oil wealth was d undisputed leader in Africa & d strongest voice in d united nation. In recognition of nigeria's contribution to d struggle against apartheid, d UN made nigeria's permanent representative, major Gen. Joseph Nanven Garba, chairman of d UN anti-apartheid cmtee. d job of d UN & particularly dis cmtee in ending apartheid can not be over-emphasised. South Africa succeeded where d palestinians failed mainly because it had a nigerian govt dat had a robust foreign policy & was resolutely commited to ending apartheid which it regarded as its own problem. Thanx to nigeria's robust agitation at d UN, d issue of apartheid was always on d front burner & ending apartheid became a worldwide phenomenon. As chairman of d UN anti-apartheid cmtee it rallied d world to d plight of d blacks in S/Africa. Nigeria's Nationalization of d assets of apartheid sympathisers like d UK whose British Petroleum (BP), became African Petroleum (AP), Barclays Bank became Union Bank etc. was one of d singular biggest events dat pulled d rug frm under apartheid by helping to sever d link between apartheid SA & its western backers who had to start to re-think their relationship wit d apartheid enclave. This was a turning point & it led to a big shift in their support of apartheid.
Without d leadership dat 9ja provided on d issue at d UN, i believe sincerely dat d S/A struggle could hav ended up like d Palestinian struggle. In those days 9ja saw itself as a country on a great & noble mission. No segment of society was left out. Musicians like d late Sunny Okosun used their music like d epic album "Fire in Soweto" to bring awareness to d need to end apartheid. compulsory deductions were made frm salaries of civil servants to fund d ANC.
South African leaders ar doing their nation a disservice by not educating d born-frees on Nigeria's contribution to their history.
