@treasuremabel....hear my story....

i hardly take my pills...3yrs ago....cos i was doing fine...i only take water...eat vegetables...eat fruits(which i still do till now)...and eat well..but i forgot one thing....BY STRENGTH SHALL NO MAN PREVAIL...I was eating well...playing football....had girlfriend then.(.u know na..we must rock too)...i go everyday without single drugs and checkups...for almost 2years....when you see me self...you will think i am as normal as an AA patient...

strong and healthy...full of life....i never took drugs i repeat it again...for almost two years...dont doubt me please....i was in in school then..you know school life na....and it was my final year period...i did strong works..i hit the gym every weekends..(i dey play full time football...90mins self.)....

towards my final paper...sickness struck...
it was just like a dream to me...instantly..i became dry..
i was having headache..(mind you..anytime i feel headache..i know my blood rate has become 14%)..and constant dehydration...almost one week..i wasn't bothered either...i thought its one of those things..i took folic acid two days..and i was fine....

two days after... i saw hell...
i fainted...and was rushed to hospital...my joints in every part of my body was not it again...i couldnt sleep...i couldnt wake up....i couldnt lie down..i couldn't seat down...i couldnt open my eyes..i couldnt close my eyes...i was dead alive...the pains is in- explainable...i lost it....i was transfused...given drips almost 10 at ago..the drip was fastened..

i opened my eyes after 3days...(lols)
the mr strong man was alive again..now..doctors were sitting all around me...real doctors..physicians..not just any other doc..

they asked me...mr patrick...when was the last time u took ur drugs...i was just looking at dem like a lost sheep...they said....TO BE CONTINUED.

I didnt just decide on my own dear, I made the decision with the help n approval of God n my docs
Besides, our resistance n body systems are all different, what works for you would definitely not work for me

a. Am a smart 18years old girl
b. No way! Am 18!
c. Well, I don't seem to understand this question, please shed more light if you don't mind

Great. You're indeed a smart, brave and tough lady.

My third questions is precipitated on the herditary nature of sickle cell anaemia (union of AS & AS, AS & SS and SS & SS). However I have come across some sickle cell sufferers and carriers who would not be guided by this scientific rule but choose their spouse irrespective of his/her genotype.

Many of these people are people of faith who choose miracle & faith over scientific guidance. What is your take on this?

I have a friend, a sickler. He is in his late 20's. He enjoys smoking and alcohol. We have tried talking to him to stop such lifestyle cry

I had an SS friend that lived that way... He's dead... He may have been depressed that he was a sickler and tried to live normally like non-sicklers...

Sicklers tend to live in denial...

treasuremabel should better keep her meds close if she's full SS...

I can't no, I will never under any circumstance have anything intimate to do with an AS/SS guy not to talk of marriage
I chose to be guided by my experience as a warrior n the scientific rule
Don't get me wrong, I believe in faith n miracles but seeing a danger n jumping into it with the hope that a miracle would happen n protect you is absolute foolishness

continuation....

they asked...when last did u take ur medication??...
i was just looking at dem...the doctors already knew i was not taking my drugs...so they gave me an injection to kill the accumulated pains and whatever i have in my body...i struggled with pains for one week..i mean PAINS....before i could be relieved a little..

a lady came in and talked with me privately..and she says
my dear..u dint choose this life..its never what u wanted..but since it happened now..will u kill your self??...will u neglect ur drugs cos u feeling strong(as i heard those words..negligence of drugs)..will u not follow the proper way of treating it so u will last long?..what pleasure will u derive from putting ur parents and loved ones in pains and panicking whenever you having crises??...so many if's and please..

from that day..i realised that ONCE A SICKLE CELL ALWAYS A SICKLE CELL....no matter how strong you feel you are..never neglect your medication...YES we may be different in all our appearances..BUT A SNAKE WILL ALWAYS BE A SNAKE...NO MATTER THE COLOUR..THE TYPE..THE BIGNESS OR SMALLNESS OF IT...

MY dear..please dont neglect your drugs oo...at least you can go with out drugs for weeks ...but not months nor years.... please..i beg u....take them once in a while..to avoid stories o..to treat accumulated pains as a sickle its dangerous seriously..

i go without drugs too..but i know my limit..am 28yrs old now...an ACCOUNTANT BY PROFESSION..almost done with my NYSC PROGRAMME...few weeks to go..before i start working by GODS grace..

planning on writing a book on SICKLES...when i attain some certain level..STAY WELL PEOPLE...LIVE HEALTHY!!!!!

Most of these 'people of Faith' are the one that will easily give up and start questioning God when the problem started. Years back i was 'healed' @ a crusade and even testified to it, my Doctor conducted a test n seeing my desperation told me that my genotype has bn changed to AA. I Stopped all medication only to found myself admitted @ LUTH. It was d mercy og God that brought me back! God says He will not give us trials we cannot carry, in the midst of it He will provide a way out. It is not wise to tempt God n bring a child to this world suffer pains because of selfish interest.

It is not easy but i thank God for your life.

I will like to prescribe this drug called ''Even Flo'' for all the warriors. I can tell you it works like wonder. I have warriors around me and since they started using this herbal drug, they have a new testimony.

You can Google it. It being manufacture in USA by a company called Healing Blend Natural.

Also, try taking a lot of coconut water, it neutralizes the system.

Spinach (ewgu leaf) is very good for you. You can blend it to get the water out, drink it at least twice a week. it really helps.

Stop eating junks, fast food, sugary drinks. Take natural juice

If you need the Even Flo, I can help you out with it or you can order for it on line.

Bless you.....

Great answer @treasuremabel. Wisdom is profitable to direct Ecc 10:10

The situation of not taking your drugs as a sickle cell patient is akin to choosing one's partner irrespective of his/her genotype- it is a recipe for disaster. While I understand and respect the peculiarities of your choice, I think it should not be encouraged. Hence I advise you pay a second thought at patrickdalins experience.

People of faith should realised that miracles also happen by taking your drugs, afterall many others took the same drugs but it never worked for them.

You're a great girl, you're a warrior, keep fighting for you shall conquer.

Reading this stories reminds me of my pain, I lost a niece last 2 years that was just her first crisis at age 3,, Yesterday i also lost a cousin, a very close one at that to same major crisis. He collapsed playing football, he was in his final year at d university. I still have another small niece still a carrier, each time i look her in d face. I jst remember her late sister, she's 5 now and we make sure she take her drugs and watch her closely.

Now my elder bros wife is pregnant again, but where determine to do a foestus test to determine the child's Genotype before she puts to bed, if we found out d child is going to be a carrier, she will have to abort it. We cant take it anymore, it really hurt watching them go through pains during their crisis time.

Grt love to all Warriors, God will continue to strengthen you all.

treasuremabel:

Following a mysterious bone pains at age 8, I found out I had sickle cell anaemia,
It wasn't easy to mange it then.
To start with,

Sickle cell is a blood disorder that is hereditary n starts from when one is born,
So what happened? Why did mine wait till I was 8 before it started?

Funny enough, my mum said I was never sick as a baby n the only problem I had was measles,
I grew curious n asked my doctor,
After a number of 'no idea' replies he came up with an hypoyhesis where he claimed that my healthy look n lack of crisis or sickle cell symptoms till age 8 was as a result of extensive breast feeding.
Still don't know if his hypothesis is wrong or right.

Life as a warrior wasn't easy but what helped me was the refusal to accept self pity in my life,
Crazy enough, I happen to belong to a class of people who are intelligent,
After coming first in exams, I kept telling myself on n on that I was better than those with normal RBCs
I believed it too n that worked for me!
I had a dream n I wanted to accomplish it irrespective of my health difference n the set backs I suffered as a sickler
I refused to receive pitied love, in fact I got disgusted when people became nicer to me just cos they found out I have sickle cell anaemia.
I refused to compromise, I dreamed like every normal person.

How did I do it all??
1. I just believed in myself
2. I took care of my health, you know, eat at the right time, avoided stuff that contained iron, avoided extremely bitter things, made sure the weather was conducive for me, drank lots of water n took fruits.
3. I never depended on the drugs
4. I set goals for myself
5. I discovered who I am n who I wanted to be
6. I gave no room to self pity or pity from others
7. I saw sickle cell anaemia as a challenge not a disease
8. I never allowed myself to get intimidated by those with normal RBCs
9. I just kept FIGHTING n NEVER GAVE UP.

Tell you what, I don't take folic acid everyday, I don't take any drugs at all currently but my lifestyle has kept me away from hospital for 1year n 8months now,

If I can do it....you can do better cos we all are warriors.

To those who have loved ones who are warriors, keep encouraging,
Its not easy but its POSSIBLE!

Let's spread the awareness n keep FIGHTING!

TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS CHRIST AMEN.

Your greatest ally is God, am not a peacher am just speaking from experience. He knows how to ease the pain. As a maintenance engineer The stress I go through is unimaginable yet God helps me. I hate mosquito bites ,cold is preventable by jackets. I don't joke with folic acid and bco plus multivite. Tramadol is always in my back pack. I pray and believe in God so I survive. I know my boundaries though. Everything depends on God and your disposition to live. Never never never never give up. kiss
