They will be freed by a higher court (court of appeal or the supreme court). The judgement is not final.

It is on this note that i started a Hash tag on twitter, with my handle @generaliy07, #SaveKanoNine towards creating awareness on the impending plight of this people, it is presently trending.

I implore everyone reading this who has a considerable access to the government of Kano or Nigeria to please speak on behalf of these nine, towards not just saving their lives but also ensuring their safety thereafter, as we all are aware of how far fanatics can go.

I know laws can vary from state to state, but laws involving this magnitude of consequence, i.e, death, should be consistent across states.

Please lawyers need to take this one up.

I thought the Nigerian constitution, which should reign supreme guarantees "Right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion", "Right to freedom of expression and the press", Right to freedom from discrimination"...

What about this section:

39. (1) Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference.


With all these, the government of that state can't now say that, one's opinion, be it deem blasphemous or not, can now be punished with even the most grave of punishments; a death sentence.

It just doesn't add up.

Nigeria is synonymous with confusion and chaos.

They were tried according to shariah law, if they choose to appeal, they will be tried in a conventional court and that section you just quoted will most likely set them free.

But Op note that the Sharia law is legally enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria. So you are wrong on the fact that they can't take decision using it.

The only way out is to seek redress in a higher court of higher jurisprudence which is the Supreme court in this case.
