Explaining Bible Contradiction. by malvisguy212: 7:46am On Jul 19, 2015 |
Many times you will see some detractor bring out a list of so-called contradictions. There are many online and some are quite long. All go to great lengths to try and prove that the Bible is filled with errors. However, if one is looking at these passages objectively, you will find it is the list maker who is being dishonest in his approach. That's because they have chosen to ignore the context in which the statement. You see,CONTEXT is really the thing that determines what the speaker is trying to convey for any passage. If I were to say "I missed my family today" you may assume that I meant I felt a longing to be with my family when I couldn't. However, if I put the sentence in this context: "I missed my family. It looks like they left five minutes before I arrived." then the meaning of the statement changes dramatically. Finally, if the context is "We had a great time at the picnic. I hit all my friends with water balloons. I missed my family." then we have another meaning. Let's extend this idea to two statements. If I were to tell a co-worker on Monday "I had some good family time at the picnic", then later tell someone else "I missed my family" you might think this is a contradiction, but since the context for the second sentence may be understood in a different manner, you can quickly see that the contradiction doesn't exist. Most of the contradiction fell into this error, the critics ignore the LARGE context. EXAMPLE 1: Exodus 32:14 vs. Numbers 23:19 - Does God Repent? Exodus 32:14 says "the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do" VS. Numbers 23:19 says God does not repent: ANSWER: God is supposed to be all good and all knowing, so why would such a God change His mind or repent of something He has decided to do? This is the challenge offered above. Actually, Numbers 23:19 is describing this very aspect of God. God, speaking through Balaam, explains His nature to the pagan king Balak and says, "God is not a man, that he should lie, Neither the son of man, that he should repent: Hath he said, and will he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and will he not make it good?" However, Exodus 32:14 is a completely different context. God is speaking with Moses and telling him that the children of Israel are sinning and their sins are putting them in danger of being judged. God then says "Let Me alone, that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them; and I will make of you a great nation." Now, God had previously promised that He would deliver the nation of Israel out of the bondage of Egypt and into the Promised Land. NOTICE how He says "Let me alone." This was a test for Moses. God wanted to see if Moses would intercede for the people and provide a way of escape for them. Moses did as he should have and God didn't destroy Israel. In writing this incident, Moses chose to use dramatic language to reflect the seriousness of the situation. By saying "God changed His mind" or "God repented", Moses employs what is known as an anthropomorphism - ascribing human qualities to God - to make his point. God promised that He would deliver Israel and He did. The "changing of mind" wasn't a change at all - God made good on his promise. EXAMPLE 2: Mark 15:25 vs. John 19:14-15 - The Time of the Crucifixion Mark 15:25 Jesus was crucified at the THIRD HOUR VS. John 19:14-15 says the SIXTH HOUR. ANSWER: Mark figures the time by Jewish reckoning, where the day would start at sundown and be broken into segments. We still see this today as observant Jews start their observance of the Sabbath at sundown. This would make the third hour to be about noon. The Romans reckoned their time differently and their segments were longer. Ancient Roman sundials show that the daylight hours were divided into twelve equal segments, or hours. However, there were only two major segments, daytime and nighttime, with the hours beginning at sunrise and counted until sunset. Therefore, this makes the sixth hour in Roman time also about noon. John's audience was the GENTILE church, so John uses Roman time throughout His Gospel. EXAMPLE 3: If God is full of love, why did he destroy nations? ANSWER: He destroyed them out of love for the people. Just like the world interceded and destroyed Nazi Germany to protect the people of the world from violence, God did likewise. God destroyed the land in the time of Noah because of the violence it was filled with (Genesis 6:13). God destroyed Sodom and Gomorra because of the violence that it was filled with (Genesis 13:13), and the fact that there was not one righteous man living there (Genesis 18:16-25). He threatened to destroy Nineveh because of the violence in their land (Jonah 3:, but Nineveh changed their ways and was spared (verse 10). God destroyed Jerusalem because the city was full of violence (Ezekiel 7:23-25). God could not find one righteous man in Israel, so he had to destroy it to save the people from their misery (Ezekiel 22:29-31). If God would have found even one man that sought God's Truth, God would have pardoned it (Jeremiah 5:1). Peace. |

Rilwayne001:1. There is a difference between a trial and a temptation, although both come from the same Greek word peirasmos. They are often used INTERCHANGEABLE though. After all, temptation is a trial (of faith), and every trial is a temptation (to grumble). When the word appears in the New Testament the CONTEXT helps us to see which interpretation is meant. The difference between trial and temptation is. temptation: "Do this pleasant thing and do not let yourself be hindered by the fact that it is wrong," whereas trial says, "Do this good and noble thing, and do not let yourself be hindered by the fact that it is painful". 2.He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing. ( Job 26:7) He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight. ( Job 26: He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it. ( Job 26:9) He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness. ( Job 26:10) The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke. ( Job 26:11) As one can see, Job comes up with some rather remarkable insights into the nature of the earth. He says that the earth is suspended over nothing and that the clouds carry water and have weight, yet do not fall to earth. In the context of the passage, it is clear that the "pillars" are the mountains, which quake at God's rebuke. Whereas the Quran says the earth is like a carpet that is held in place by the heavy mountains, described as being like tent pegs, so that it won't move or shake, the Bible associates the mountains with shaking and says that, instead of placing the mountains on the earth, God caused the mountains to rise up. So, it is pretty obvious that these pillars aren't holding anything up, but are merely free-standing pillars, similar to those found in Solomon's Temple 3.Jehoachin's father, Madehim, became an unofficial co-ruler at the age of eight to train him! This was followed with Jehoachin becoming officially the king at his father's death at 18 years of age! |

Re: Explaining Bible Contradiction. by malvisguy212: 8:43am On Jul 19, 2015 |
Rilwayne001:Proverbs has much to say about fools. They despise wisdom (Proverbs 1:7, 22, 10:21, 23:9); they are right in their own eyes (Proverbs 12:15); they are deceitful (Proverbs 14: and scornful (Proverbs 10:23, 14:9). The wise are also given instruction on how to deal with fools in Proverbs. Instructing a fool is pointless because his speech is full of foolishness ( Proverbs 15:2, 14) and he does not want wisdom and understanding ( Proverbs 18:2). The futility of trying to impart wisdom to a fool is the basis of Proverbs 26:4-5, which tell us how to answer a fool. These seemingly contradictory verses are actually a common form of parallelism found in the Old Testament, where one idea builds upon another. Verse 4 warns against arguing with a fool on his own terms, lest we stoop to his level and become as foolish as he is. Because he despises wisdom and correction, the fool will not listen to wise reason and will try to draw us into his type of argument, whether it is by using deceit, scoffing at our wisdom, or becoming angry and abusive. If we allow him to draw us into this type of discourse, we are answering him “according to his folly” in the sense of becoming like him. The phrase “according to his folly” in verse 5, on the other hand, tells us that there are times when a fool has to be addressed so that his foolishness will not go unchallenged. In this sense answering him according to his folly means to expose the foolishness of his words, rebuking him on the basis of his folly so he will see the idiocy of his words and reasoning. Our “answer” in this case is to be one of reproof, showing him the truth so he might see the foolishness of his words in the light of reason. Even though he will most likely despise and reject the wisdom offered to him, we are to make the attempt, both for the sake of the truth which is always to be declared, and for the sake of those listening, that they may see the difference between wisdom and folly and be instructed. Whether we use the principle of verse 4 and deal with a fool by ignoring him, or obey verse 5 and reprove a fool depends on the situation. In matters of insignificance, it’s probably better to disregard him. In more important areas, such as when a fool denies the existence of God ( Psalm 14:1), verse 5 tells us to respond to his foolishness with words of rebuke and instruction. To let a fool speak his nonsense without reproof encourages him to remain wise in his own eyes and possibly gives credibility to his folly in the eyes of others. In short, in negligible issues we should just ignore fools, but in issues that matter, they must be dealt with so that credence will not be given to what they say. http://www.gotquestions.org/Proverbs-26-4-5.html |

Re: Explaining Bible Contradiction. by Nobody: 11:10am On Jul 19, 2015 |
ShayGirl: the answer to this is simple, the Four Gospels i.e Mattew,Mark, luke,John and the book of Acts, they are eye-witnesses accounts,i.e they wrote what they saw or heard,by doing this, they could not have captured all the events. John even iterates this fact in the last chapter of John. he said "Jesus did many things that was not recorded in this book". see John20:30. None of the Four Gospels(Mattew,Mark,Luke,John) fully captured all the events. It is when you place all of them together that you will have clear picture of the whole events. |

malvisguy212: rilwayne001 does not know that many words are used figuratively in the bible. he just picks the ones he wants to use there thereby taking it out of context. The context itself defines the meaning of all the words. Faith in luke 11 and luke 18 is different from the faith in the entire book of Romans. In Bible interpretation, immediately the context changes, the meaning of all the Words changes. 1 Like |
