rigarmortis: That was exactly what he said he was going to do at the eagle square with his inaugural speech. He said and i quote "The amnesty programme in the Niger Delta is due to end in December, but the Government intends to invest heavily in the projects, and programmes currently in place. I call on the leadership and people in these areas to cooperate with the State and Federal Government in the rehabilitation programmes which will be streamlined and made more effective. As ever, I am ready to listen to grievances of my fellow Nigerians. I extend my hand of fellowship to them so that we can bring peace and build prosperity for our people. - " See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/read-president-buhari-inaugural-speech/#sthash.L9jzDoKq.dpuf What else do you want him to do? Nigerian state cannot simply afford to keep ignoring the root cause of all these problems. The people that need real development are the common Niger delta folks not Mend |

Nigeria needs peace and tranquillity in the Niger Delta so d nation can have money in her purse. That said, any form of bombardment in d Niger delta (weda from Nigerian military or Niger Delta militants) will cause petroleum exploration and exportation to grind to a halt because no expatriate or indigenous oil worker is ready to die for Nigeria. They'll all desert d rigs, flow stations and platforms. And if diz events continue for a few weeks to months, FG will become broke and may not be able to pay salaries and oda responsibilities. I think in this regard, the government can't afford to approach with sheer force. Nigeria's unity is too fragile ryt now. As strange as it may sound, looks like d militants hold d aces in dis one. For doz of u saying navy, airforce and soldiers will be deployed, just try to be rational and assess things critically. You can't cut off ur nose just because of catarrh. we've not even surmounted d BH challenge but I bet u d Niger Delta issue is a lot more dicey because unlike d northeast, d niger delta boasts countless installations and activities dat are critical to Nigeria's sovereignty and financial buoyancy. 5 Likes 1 Share |

firstEVA:Buhari cud not wipe out boko haram who were in plain lands, given also that he understands dia ways better seeing he is also a Hausa man, with the full force of the military behind him, with no need to exercise tact since BH occupies an area dat will cause us no serious collateral and economic damage if we take them on headlong. Now just take all the points I raised above and find the opposite. That is what u get in the naija delta. How can u now assume he can take on tompolo? A man in the creeks and thick rainforests..... a man who has d motivation to keep fighting, in an area where naija has everything to lose if things go south. Truly speaking, primary school kids who watches action films a lot have come to nairaland [/b][/size] 3 Likes |

the nigerian state has suffered..that any aggrieved person threatens her...so empowering militants other than d poor people of d niger delta is our gain whilst d former President held sway...u need to see how armed these guys are now...or is it the increased poverty in d niger delta?..whatever happens btw them and d govt,it is still d poor people that will bear the brunt as the region will be turned to a war zone...all these will not move this country forward and this I thought is supposed to be our focus...I might not have voted for buhari but he is d one there now...so let's pray he succeeds so we can have a better life irrespective of who is delivering that better life. |

When the economy of a nation is crippled then everything stops working and that's what the militants can do. And don't even think Nigeria navy can handle this guy's because they are familiar with their own territory (the creeks). The truth is nobody should be bigger than the government but if we want to progress and attain our dreams as a nation then the government mustn't use force with this guys 2 Likes |

jaybee3: well, I agree with you on the bolded, but you know how inconsistent buhari is, both in speech and action, I wont start listing some of them here to avoid the risk of needless repetition. buhari seems to live in his own world (somewhere between 1962-1979) and lacks the tact that diplomacy requires to solve issues as this, forget all the nice speeches, he didn't write them and was just repeating a well (or badly.....depending on the importance you place on syntax) essay. 3 Likes |

rigarmortis: Buhari doesn't have a choice and we aren't in a military era where he has total/absolute control They will definitely go for the best possible approach but are the militants open to constructive dialogue and lasting solution? remember we are dealing with extremely greedy militants who are in it for the pocket/stomach alone |
