Please give us a break. OBJ just indirectly said that he didn't start anything and couldn't have started it. Stop trying to cover up for him, also remind us of one of OBJ achievements apart from third term schemes & scandals.

Guy, please learn to do a little research before opening your mouth gboa gboa in public only to comes across as an ignoramus...

OBJ oversaw the GSM revolution which is likely one of the reasons you are able to post on Nairaland. We all saw what happened when GEJ did his own privatization with electricity

Who built almost all the institutions ctof governance GEJ functioned with?

What most do not know is that GEJ's railway was a bastardization of the project began by OBJ. OBJ completed the design, awarded the contract and started the project only for GEJ to bastardise the project with an obsolete design while stealing loads of money

Don't let people take your credit/glory and give it to someone else. OBJ did nothing during his term apart from cancelling our debt. All federal roads became death trap for Nigerians, on a daily basis east bound passenger buses were attacked by armed robbers once the bus gets to a bad spot on the highway. Power projects gulped over 16 billion dollars, and yet we could not boast of 10,000 MW. Please be objective in your comments and don't let the hate you have for GEJ rob you of your own glory.

Infrastructure wise, GEJ did better than previous heads of state, we must give that credit to him. OBJ should let the man be.

I kind of agree with OBJ in the sense that the rail rehabilitation done by gej wont be able to accommodate our economic need in say 10 years time and we will have to spend more money in securing a better technology. Proper research, planning, and less politics would have revealed this truth.

Which OBJ oversaw GSM, please stop that. GSM came to Nigeria because it was the right time for it to come, and soon as it came, Nitel went into extinction. As at the time GSM came to Nigeria, most west african countries already had GSM. Technology was sweeping across all nation, OBJ couldn't have stopped it.

It's like saying OBJ oversaw children growing teeth, it's funny because your teeth will always grown when the time is due, no human can stop it. GSM was a developmental investment that was bound to happen, it only happened during the time of OBJ. One of the factors that facilitated this was a stable democratic process which normally boosts investors confidence on ROI.

Oga he only brought GSM then to enrich he and his cronies. For crying out loud how much was the tariff then & how much was a sim card then? Also could you flip through a page then before your data gets exhausted? Bros abeg let's find better person to talk of and not OBJ.

For those of you wondering what OBJ did in 8 years, you are not to be blamed. Most Nigerian Africans only see the present and are incapable of looking into the future or seeing the bigger picture. To most Africans, a good president is the one that builds/renovates roads for immediate consumption.

Obj saved several billions of dollars in his 8 years of leadership so that his successor will have funds to bring about massive infrastructural development. Go and check the amount he met in Nigerian coffers in 1999 when he assumed office and also check the amount he left behind when he left. Good leadership requires forward thinking, vision and proper planning. It is not about indiscriminately awarding contracts or what you achieve now, but rather, it is about what your efforts achieve much later for your constituents.

After many years of military rule, OBJ successfully lifted Nigeria out of a deep economic and political pit and placed Nigeria on the world economic map. OBJ cleared Nigeria's external debts and boosted our foreign reserves like never before. The reason behind that was to strengthen Nigeria's credit worthiness and restore Nigeria's political relevance in the international scheme of things. OBJ's 'wasted' 8 years was wasted in building a mega-momentum for the nation to launch us into massive infrastructural development. Unfortunately for OBJ and for Nigeria, OBJ never knew his successors were going to be visionless, irresponsible wasters.

The train tracks you talk about, it was under OBJ's regime that the masterplan of the modernised Nigerian railway system was prepared. OBJ successfully constructed the Ajaokuta - Warri standard gauge line (which is of great economic importance to the steel cities) and he was about commencing the Abuja to Kaduna standard gauge rail when he handed over to Yaradua. However GEJ came in and renovated the 1903 narrow gauge tracks from Lagos to Kano instead of following the masterplan which was meant to replace the old tracks with modern standard gauges. Now we can only have snail speed trains and people are celebrating GEJ and insulting OBJ. A little investigation would even reveal that the money squandered in resuscitating the 1903 lines would have at least built half of the modern lines thereby giving us standard world class high speed trains.

For those hating Obasanjo, please mention any other person who commands so much influence both at home and abroad, even President Buhari is nowhere near the achievements of OBJ. The problem with Tanoids, Jonathanians and wailing wailers is that they prefer to continue with the status quo of Stealing which their paymaster said,'its not corruption'.

What a mischievous and vitriolic accusation borne out of jealousy and envy. OBJ is pained because GEJ is becoming increasingly popular. He now feels that his popularity is a threat to him.

Guy sentiment aside, OBJ was a dictator who wanted to rule like other African leaders. The difference between OBJ and GEJ is very clear and obvious. GEJ is a true democrat.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday slammed ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for lacking vision  in the rehabilitation of the railways.

He based his criticism on the fact that the railway lines were obsolete as they were constructed in 1903 and could not match the modern global trends.

The Jonathan administration embarked on the rehabilitation of the railway system with a view of overhauling the sector which had decayed for years and abandoned by previous governments.

“For what reason should anybody in his right senses in Nigeria of today believe that rehabilitating the railway system which was completed in 1903 to carry three million tonnes of goods is what we need today,” he said.

The former president who spoke during a television programme monitored yesterday said there was no earthly reason why the rehabilitated railway system of Nigeria today could serve Nigerians

Obasanjo, who  noted that the system was divided into two, Eastern and Western, lamented that the latter caused a whooping $8.3 billion Dollars

According to him, ‘if Nigeria would achieve the vision 20-20-20, we would need a first class land, water and air transportation, and good land transportation can only be railway and roads.

Don't mind them. It was actually Babangida that put in place the policies and machinery for the deregulation of the telecoms sector. OBJ came in at the tail end and cashed in, taking the glory for himself..... as usual.

Obasanjo is an id*iot!

I'm no fan of Jonathan but at least he tried to do something about the railway. What did that ugly gorilla called Obasanjo do in his own administration? This is an evil as*shole who committed many atrocities during his administration!

Does he think everyone is suffering from Alzheimer? The id*iot didn't mention he was the one who placed Jonathan in power.
Obasanjo belongs in prison!

The truth some people find hard to accept is that OBJ did well for Nigeria during his tenure as democratically elected president of Nigeria. His singualr efforts brought Nigeria back on the global map as an emerging economy to reckon with only for the clueless administrations of Ya'adua and Jonathan to rubish the efforts with daylight robbery of the national commonwealth. If not that we do not have an existing value system, one does not expect some people to come to a forum like this to defend Jonathan against genuine comments made by OBJ on how GEJ lost focus and failed.

Which dirty singular efforts, for crying out loud??! ! What 'emerging economy', biko nu ?? In fact, I believe we won far more accolades on the global map under GEJ than under OBJ! Ask the World Economic Forum (WEF). smiley

OBJ only paid back loans taken from western creditors including the IMF & World Bank, and increased our external reserves, while keeping our army in a moribund state, our infrastructure in disrepair, our healthcare system on death row and our industries in a comatose situation! angry

People are not defending Jonathan because he is perfect. NO! People are attacking OBJ, because he is nothing more than a hypocrite who wants to pull others down out of misplaced sense of envy. Kilode??! sad

Did OBJ too not lose focus? Did he not fail? Or what else would you call a man who spent 4 years (or is it 8 years) planning the so-called design of a modern railway system but failed woefully to execute it, knowing he had a limited tenure??
