All because he said he is Ika and not igbo so the major igbos isolated him?

Meeeeeehn God, this Biafra should do and come oh.

He didn't actually say he's an Ika man, he just blurted out he's not Igbo as if there was something wrong with that, if he simply said my name is actually Ika it would have made sense, he didn't mention Ika once, he simply referred to Abavo as a small village.

I tell you! we have suffered! I'm not bothered about his Ika association! but whenever The people commit anything they should group them properly! just like Emefiele and iwuala received all the attack because they are igbos.
when Nzeogwu led the coup, igbo people especially the SE are still suffering from that! yet they will come and deny igboness, but they will carry the igbo names up and down! the igbos from SE will always bear the brunt!

Oh, if he sounded arrogant and insultive then its understandable.
But if he just said he is not igbo, in a cool tone then there's nothing wrong in saying you are not what you are not.

And to think he was selected as a substitute for Steven Keshi based on his igbo roots.

They might as well hand the coach to Celestine Babayaro since the pacification for Keshi removal is not igbo.

The thing is, the statement is loaded with history, especially history of especially Ika people not only partly denying they are Igbo, as well as benefiting from the trajectory of the wider Igbo people under the guise of Anioma, but there's also anti-Igbo sentiment in his tone, it was completely unnecessary for him to say he was not Igbo, he could just say his name and say where he was from. He just sounded insecure, as if he didn't want any Igbo person associating with him, and that's fine, but don't try and insult anybody, and that's why he's being scolded.

I know about Ika, I speak it a little. The truth is people from Ika and Ukwuani are actually confused and uncertain about their relationship with an Igbo identity, you could get some that would say they are Igbo, some would even say they're not Igbo they are "Ibo", and many who would act as if Igbo is a different ethnic group (and harbor strong anti-Igbo sentiment, like the rest of western delta areas, unfortunately). They're not actually sure where they stand, I say this because even the Obi of Owa, an Ika town that's even closer to Edo State than Abavo has confirmed that their history stems from what is now Anambra State. I find that the people who disclaim being Igbo usually don't have that 'Igbo spark' in them, they don't have that thing about them that you recognise when you see an Igbo person and even when some of them claim to be Igbo it doesn't always sit well. This makes more sense when you look in the history of these towns and find that a massive portion of the families that settled there were actually Edo people and not Igbo people, and were acculturated into a hybrid Edo-Igbo society.

we dont have to come from Anambra to be Igbos.
We are Igbos ourselves by virtue of our culture which has more than 85% similarity with say Igbo-Ukwu.
We also have similarities with the Binis, but these similarities are always taught to be indigenous to Bini due to the documentation of their history that potrays them as some ethnic Garden of Eden of the midwest.

We are probably aboriginal Igbos that came under rule by some expansionist Benin Oba, and our monarchs and royals originally could have been from Bini.

I love you my akwaibom wife...muuuuuuuaaaaaah!!!
If Oliseh say's he is not igbo, that he is ika....why don't u respect him as an Ika man?

Ika can be part of Biafra if they choose to but if they decide to be called ika people rather than igbo people I feel its best they are respected and identified as who they are.

The itsekiris for example answer both igbo and yoruba names,....does that make them yoruba or igbo?...NO, they are itsekiris....
The Ika people cant come out tomorrow to say all other igbos are Ika and not igbo...I'm sure igbos from imo, abia, anambra, enugu and ebonyi won't accept such pronouncement from the Ika people.

My view, just respect people for who they choose to be....don't call them something else....
The Jekri people have no territorial contiguity with Igboland so where did the Igbo names come from
They're surrounded by Ofei,Bini,Sobo & Izon tribes so its natural they answer names from those places.
Stop peddling lies to buttress a weak point.. angry moreover the Ikas are Igbos that migrated from owere in the 11th century so it's wrong for them to deny their heritage angry
In Biafra, they'd ve their own cultural area which would also be a province with autonomous powers to develop at their pace but that's it.in history, they served as the westernmost fortress of Igboland and would continue to do so. smiley

That's the problem, people like him and others from "Igboid" groups who have a history of having people not only completely disassociating themselves from the Igbo people, but also being openly anti-Igbo, like the Ika and Ikwere, also do not disclaim the benefits they get from being associated with being Igbo, like Tonto Dikeh (Ikwere) and Sunday Oliseh (Ika), they still benefit from being part of something they supposedly hate being a part of, or at least a good amount of their people do.

A clan is different from a tribe
An Ika man is to Igboland what an Egba man is to yorubaland
True.
But in some situations, especially with minorities, a clan is the tribe. In ika land, do u know there are subclans?

By Igboland and Yorubaland you mean? Would you classify the yorubalike speaking itsekiris under yoruba land? Or the Yorubalike speaking akoko edos under yorubaland?
Do you know there are yorubalike tribes in togo, Benin even as far as serria-leone? These people refuse to be called yorubas explicitly...you hear names like esan, akokoedo, afemai, itsekiri, fon, ewe etc...that's their tribe, not yoruba.

As regards the ika people, I am not ika so I can't speak for them, but if Sunday Oliseh's view is carried by many of his kinsmen, then they are Ika, their language might sound igbotic but its IKA language as they have called it, not igbo.

If they can't call your anambra pure igbo as Ika or ukwanni, then you shouldn't be at liberty to call their own Ika language as igbo.

I understand your point tho.
Me I just wish we should learn to live and let live.

This is not a debate and u did not ask a valid question.

Nigeria being diverse, wen u remove a person from a position, to appease the group they belong and avoid accusation of tribalism, u replace them with another person from the same group.

It is not a coincidence that Oliseh and Keshi are both from Anioma Delta. Is the Nigerian national team Deltan?

However, this scenario is not always the case but based on the evidence was applicable in this case.

Very churlish thing to say "drop our names" The reality is that many groups that call themselves Igbo today never did so before Nigeria was created to the question of ownership of language or names is silly. What about names like Peter and Paul and Marinus that Ibos use everywhere. We speak English and use it on this website does that make us English? At the bolded, unfortunately since after the civil war, the Ikas and Ukwuanis amongst the four segments of native Igbo speakers in Delta state are divided on whether they'd identified with what they actually speak. The other two, Oshimmili and Aniocha do not have much of this problem. Sunday is free to choose whether he'd like to be identified with his language or not, but that doesn't negate the fact that others from Abavo and the rest do not identify as Igbos. If Sunday Oliseh goes to Onitsha market he will not need an interpreter to make his bargains in Igbo language. What he'll speak will be mutually intelligle to the people. Therefore, , there is nothing like their language sounding Igbotic., It is IGBO and nothing more. How he chooses to be identified notwithstanding!

But I'm speaking as someone who knows Ika people well. Do you know any Ika? Why would he have to clarify he's not Igbo because people were speaking Igbo to him when most if not all Ika-speaking people can speak standard Igbo and are taught so in school? The fact is, he could just have said he was an Ika, which he didn't say, which means his main point was to distance himself from being Igbo. That's fine, but next time he gets support from the Igbo community or gets an appointment because someone assumed he was Igbo he should say that first before stretching out his hand. That's all.
