Hi everyone, I just bought a 2004 Ford escape v6 from a friend of mine, she has used the car in Nigeria for 3yrs. The problem here is I would like to change the fluids in the car but my friend does not know what fluids are presently in car as she can't reach the mechanic that helped her with the last changes 2yrs ago shocked

The transmission fluid look light brown or brownish red, smells bad

The engine oil looks black and smells awful

No coolant in the radiator reservoir, just water with rusty color.

I would like to put the car back in top shape, I have been reading a lot on this section and elsewhere but I am still confused.

TRANSMISSION

1. The recommend atf is mercon and I have decided to settle for pureguard atf that is mercon, mercon lv and mercon v compatible.
My fear is do I do a complete flush of the oil smelling atf (slight burnt smell when it's hot) or do I ask my mechanic to do drain and fill with about 10 quarts

Engine Oil

I have settled for milemaster semi synthetic 5w20 I found on konga, I don't want to go for full synthetic because I don't know what the previous engine oil is.
Also should I use one of these engine oil flush, the more I read about the more confused I am
I also settled for motorcraft oil filler.

Coolant

I can't find the Gold color HOAT coolant so I have decided to used OAT green freeztone coolant that is non alcohol based.

good to know that you are on the right path. When flushing the transmission, let him drain and flush out the old fluid by opening the hose that goes into the radiator and start the car, then he should put one litre of pureguard into the car and watch as the old oil trickle out of the torque converter. Once the oil coming out turns to new, he should put off the car, close all hoses and then fill up with fresh pureguard. Millemaster is also good for the oil change, if you cant get good engine flush, let it be. Millemaster has anti sludge protection and cleaning agents that will remove the sludge overtime. Freezetone coolant is also ok for the radiator.

Is it safe to flush completely the atf in an old transmission 140,000 miles without any problems?
I have also read about drain through the radiator hose, I have actually seen someone do it but with my transmission at 140,000 miles I am scared of the new transmission dissolving gunk that will further damage the transmission.

Will pureguard dissolve old gunk and sludge that have accumulated over time in my transmission? will that not block my filter since its not replaceable on my Ford escape
Re: Transmission Fluids, Getting The Right One For Your Vehicle by sooperrescue(m): 6:24pm On Aug 04, 2015
It wont,, it will remove all the fluid. The debris are gathered at the sump and so will go away once the sump is taken out and cleaned.

Gd am mr sooperescue.

I drive a nissan primera p11-144 wagon with 2.0 engine. it came with CVT transmission but the transmissio. developed problem and the transmission was replaced with another one not a CVT. The mechanic then put Holts transmission oil there since march this year. Since then I notice its hard to shift the transmission to either drive or reverse sometimes. When I shift skmetimes it makes a bang noise.

Few days ago I noticed the car is dragging more than usual when I drive it. Yesterday I drove to work and in the evening I started driving home.As I moved for like 300 meters the engine was working but the car was almost coming to a stop. I pressed down the gas pedal but it didn't respond. I just slowed down then drove slowly then it responded slowly. I managed to drive home and it was a little better.

Please what do you think I should do? Is the Holts transmission oil used Ok? Is my transmission going bad again?
Re: Transmission Fluids, Getting The Right One For Your Vehicle by sooperrescue(m): 9:11am On Aug 22, 2015
cvt transmission is not interchangeable unless you let an electrician perform some modifications. Those who normally change their murano engine and gear to toyota sienna also go thru a lot of stress. Holts atf has not been verified to be dexron iii contrary to what they claim and if there were no electrical modification done to the car when they converted your gearbox, then what you are going thru now is expected. I suggest you go back to basics, fix a cvt gear and use ns1 cvt fluid. Whatever gain you must have made by allowing your mec to tropicalise your car has been eroded. Return to basics

Thanks sir for the quick response. actually the electrician modified a lot of things there. But returning to CVT is going to be diificult for me. I spent around 120k since the transmission problem started till they changed it.

Sir, what of if I change the transmission oil to dextron III?
Re: Transmission Fluids, Getting The Right One For Your Vehicle by sooperrescue(m): 9:45am On Aug 22, 2015
the poor performance of the gear signifies that the gear is dying. Try and look for truvalue dexron iii or use pureguard dexron 6. Where is the car?

u better don't waste ur money , u can never get any smooth shift even u get the best atf of this world .
Every auto transmission has a module that controls .the modules is designed for CVT .
go back to the basics as suggested by someone earlier or u sell the car to get another one.

Amen. Please flush out that oil immediately. You are supposed to use Matic D Nissan and other alternatives like our Pureguard which is synthetic global transmission fluid. If you cant find Matic D, get in touch so that we can get you Pureguard. The automobile world has gone synthetic now, so no need dwelling in the past. Oando Syn is out now and you can use it as the Engine oil for your car. For power steering, use Oando Dex 111. Dont use seahorse and abro and other fluids. Throw them into the sea. It is better that there is oil pollution with these brands of ATF than crude oil. Pour them into the sea, the fishes will understand

You de chop fish? This kind advice sef!

Satire abi?
Re: Transmission Fluids, Getting The Right One For Your Vehicle by sooperrescue(m): 5:16am On Aug 27, 2015
If you use seahorse, you better pour it into the sea than into your gear box. I dont understand who allows all these red chemicals into the country without letting consumers to know that seahorse is good for cars made before 1995, Total fluide 11d is ideal for cars made before 1995, that Mobil ATF is for cars made before 2002, That all Dexron 111 atf are meant for cars made before 2005 yet Nigerians are still using these fluids without being protected by the Consumer Protection Council and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. Fortunately we shall commence a radio program called AUTOWATCH on Radio one 103.5 where these issues will be discussed with those saddled with the responsibilities of protecting the motorists and the way forward. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Autowatch is powered by Rescue and Recovery Nigeria Limited. It is not a satire o. Imagine the pains of the motorists using seahorse in their transmissions and the best way is to pollute the sea with Abro, Seahorse, Total, and all those white garment bottles. Stay tuned

hi OP, good job here sir. I just bought a registered VW Passat 1.8T 2003 with about 180K mileage. I want to replace the engine oil and the ATF, kindly tell me which one exactly should I buy. also kindly let me. know the type of radiator coolant that works with it. Thank you so much.
Re: Transmission Fluids, Getting The Right One For Your Vehicle by sooperrescue(m): 5:10am On Sep 07, 2015
hmm. a naija used Passat. Hope you got it for peanuts else you should be prepared for repairs, acute repairs. I saw a used 2008 Passat that was sold for N400k. The owner was glad to find a buyer at that price. Back to your questions. Try and get good engine flush and flush out the sludge in the engine, then use OANDO SYN oil. As for the transmission fluid, you need multi purpose global synthetic transmission fluid like pureguard. There is a coolant called freezetone in the market, get that too if you are in Lagos. And the final advice is to get Octane Boosters for the Passat to see if it could remedy the big issues already living with the car. VW Passat does not work very well with our fuel hence you see fewer cars on the roads these days.

Hello Op, I want to get a Naija used Nissan Quest 2005. 1-Is it advisable or I look for other brand? 2- like how much will you place on it if you re to buy one? 3- what re the potential fault/service the van is prone to have? Thanks
Re: Transmission Fluids, Getting The Right One For Your Vehicle by sooperrescue(m): 12:52pm On Sep 11, 2015
Nissan Quest is a middle class luxury van with a bigger engine capacity. What are it's uses? school runs or family car? The biggest mistake many Nigerians make is buying the big engines for city runs. You will not expect quality performance if you buy it. Quest uses premium fuel for maximum performance and without that, it is not advisable. Try Toyota sienna,

Thanks for the response, so how then can use our naija fuel with the van? What are the disadvantages of using the van city runs? Thanks
