"I am a northern Muslim and feel "represented" in this government. But I want others to feel the same. Symbolism may be empty and tokenistic but it is consequential, especially in a deeply divided nation like ours. Buhari enjoys enormous goodwill across Nigeria's familiar fissures, and I am worried that he's frittering away this goodwill with what appears, at least for now, to be his lop-sided appointments. Of the 36 appointments he has made so far, 27 are from the north and only 9 are from the south. And don't give me that canard about competence and credibility. There are competent and credible people in every part of Nigeria if Buhari looks hard enough. Buhari may well pleasantly disappoint some of us his early critics after all his appointments have been made, but he is inflicting needless self-injury on himself to allow his administration to be defined as regionalist this early.

To all the people saying that the bigot his only appointing competent people who can only be found in the North, i tell them go and look at the genesis of most civil wars in Africa and you will find that the feeling of marginalization of one group by another group in multi ethnic nations lead to this conflicts. At this point in our polity, Nigerians should forgo federal character for competency and achieving positive results. The law of equity preached by Federal Character has further divided us than uniting the people, and no thanks to the politicians, as emphasis are made on regions rather on our nation, due to greed, self-attitude and corruption.
The incumbent president is not the first and last to be skewed in terms of appointment and we should be more concerned about what and how the whole economy will develop with less corruption, using these appointees to steer it. If this will reduce corruption and poverty, enhance human and capital development, provide food and adequate security to Nigerians irrespective of background, sex, status, color and language; then, let the end result justify the appointment.
