The problem goes deeper than any Doctor or Nurse.

Ask yourself. What is the population of PH?

And what is the bed capacity of UPTH?

The students have shut down the hospital, like that will prevent future recurrences.

The problem is that health facilities in Nigeria is pathetic and highly inadequate.

Exactly.

UNIPort belongs to ministry of education. UPTH belongs to ministry of health. Uniport's health facility should be their university medical center. That it answers UPTH doesn't mean their school health fees are covered by UPTH medical services and therefore they have right to destroy the hospital's facility. So they should think before they act... My thinking.

You got a valid point.

But there's no UPTH without Uniport.

The University lacks adequate lecture halls, was it not last year 2 lecturers in separate incidents collapsed in front of their students due to overcrowding of a classroom.

The problem is the Nigerian mentality.

The lulu Briggs centre is good enough for first aid treatments, I'm sure lulu Briggs attendants would have felt a sense of belonging, and attended to her, at least, to stabilize her.

But I understand, they thought UPTH would live up to its name.

Very sad, an avoidable loss.

View from a medical doctor.

(Disclaimer...I do not work for UPTH, or any of its affiliated institutions.)

First off, I commiserate with the students of Uniport as well as the lady's family over this untimely death.

Second....let's look at this case.

They got to the hospital. Most likely....they got to the Accident and Emergency Department....the Emergency Ward. And they were told by the nurse....No space.

When the nurse tells you no space...there most likely is NO space. Most nurses in charge of A and E do not turn away any patient who comes to them for help. And when there was no space...there most likely was no space.

The problem is that we do not have a good emergency response in this country. Here is how it is done in developed countries. The girl slumps, her fellow students immediately start CPR (which they have learned) and someone calls an ambulance. The ambulance arrives....and the ambulance drivers and paramedics start first aid. Meanwhile...they have an idea of where the nearest hospital with free bed space is....and they rush her there in the ambulance (Or sometimes by helicopter.). On arrival....there is a team of docs and nurses waiting for the patient.

It does not happen in Nigeria. And yes....UPTH is filled up because A and E can get busy(I should know). I have worked in hospitals where A and E is quiet during the day...then all hell breaks loose at night. And unfortunately...patients die because there is no space...or because the Casualty officer and the nurse are overstretched serving several patients.

So, the students should not blame the medical folks here. Instead....blame the lack of planning in our country. Port should have several tertiary level hospitals that are equipped to take care of several patients. The fact they do not is hardly my colleagues fault. And it won't be right to treat the patient on the floor either.

In a hospital....a tertiary hospital....no space means no space. The number of patients there was probably too many. So....unless the students have proof that there was space and the nurse was lying....I see no case of medical negligence. I see a case for better leadership from Abuja though....and for Buhari to appoint a health minister quick quick.
Thank you doc for your contribution. It is unfortunate that whenever a patient dies in a hospital, the doctors and nurses are held responsible even when these health practitioners had done everything humanly possible to save these lives.I am not holding brief for the doctors and nurses who were on duty on that day.I write this as a doctor who has worked at this same Accident and Emergency in UPTH in the past.I must say that this particular A/E is a jungle and I mean it.It is one of the worst places for any health practitioner to take calls.Problems ranging from lack of materials to work with to inadequate number of personnels are some of the myriad of problems bedeviling this institution and not just the A/E.Its high time we started holding our leaders accountable for these kind of unfortunate events. The student should also express their grievances through a peaceful protest to the government house, not destroying government property the way it was alleged to have been done at the UPTH.This is an eye opener to some of us who have not realized the level of rot of our public health facilities. For a young life to be cut short is a great loss to the family and loved ones.RIP to the dead.May God give the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

In certain situations, people improvise, especially when it has to do with life. A first aid treatment for a start, even on the floor could have had her alive till they can do the needful.

The gates have been reopened and will not be locked, students are entitled to demonstrate within their campus not blocking a vital road like the East West or going to destroy property in UPTH.

Well...yes....but the problem is...first aid is a stop gap.

You do it with the idea that you are going to get help within the hour....and that there is bed space.

And let's be honest.....we still do not know many details about the case....such as what exactly the lady was suffering from.....eg...was she pregnant? Did she have typhoid?....and how long it took for her to get to hospital, and whether she was dead on arrival.

And managing cases on the floor....you cannot do it for all cases....and at any rate...you have to have the staff available to do the needful. Which in this case was not possible.,, because there was no bed space. The Nurses and the docs in A and E were working at full capacity. If the patient had died because the doctor was busy trying to save eight other critical cases...with limited equipment and staff...you people would still complain.

Yes....if you have adequate numbers of staff, adequate beds, and equipment. Which, at least in the first two factors...was not enough in this case.
