I came across this story online and I was flabbergasted.

Danielle Whipple, a 24 year old single mother was arrested for beating her child who flushed their rent money down the toilet because she (the mum} refused to watch TV.

The woman's neighbours reported to the police because they heard the child crying and heard the sound of smacking. When police arrived at the scene, they found Whipple' child, whose gender and age was not released, with a black eye, a bleeding nose and a red handprint on the face.

Subsequently she was arrested and now faces a charge of felony child abuse.

Now, I am in no way in support of child abuse, but i want to throw it to Nairalanders: How would you react if your child deliberately flushed N162,000 house rent money down the toilet because you refused to watch a movie with him/her?

Note that $720 is about N162,000 in Nigerian currency.

I totally understand that the mother acted out of frustration or anger. $720 is quite an amount to throw down the drain like that. However, the major issue is that in America parents are not allowed to hit their kids heavily, especially if it results to body damage or psychological after-effects. Spanking is permitted, especially as a form of correction to let the child know that it did something not right. Where it gets bad is when the spanking becomes excessive, frequent or the child suffers physical or emotional damage as a result. It is a different ball game in Nigeria where parents can spank their children as they want as part of corrective measures but here in America, it is different. Some Nigerian parents have moved back to Nigeria solely because of the more freer environment it has and the fact that they would have greater control over their kids than they would back in American.

It is usually said that black mothers spank their children more often than white mothers.

That's what happens when you allow your children to have everything their way.

Modern day parents need to learn how to say "NO" and mean it.

If you allow you child/children to have everything their own way then expect disaster the first time you will say "No" to their request.

BTW, this kain thing no dey happen from the place I came from, cause.

1. Even rats no fit see where mumsy dey hide money.

2. Who give you time to watch television?

3. Who are you to say yes when mom said NO?

You can't nah.....

There is nothing wrong in being angry but don't allow the anger to cause collateral damage.

Keep calm and come up with the 'best' punishment that can generate the lost money.

She went too far, having given her child a bleeding nose and a red handprint on the face.. Anger is controllable. In a country where there are such laws against beating up a child, she should have aborn & at least correct the child with some punishment that s/he will hardly forget..

Meanwhile, e no fit happen for 9ja.. Dey no born dah pickin well cool..
First of all, wetin go make am know where d money dey, let alone touch am.. NO FEAR! Hia!

I know we all want to give our children comfort but will u spare the rod and let ur child go astray I no mean mey u kill am grin

@ topic, its actually a dicey situation but I will refrain from beating my child. The child doesn't know the value of the money, hence his silly action.

I will however explain to him the consequence we will face for his silly behaviour. I will also deprive him of some treats till I am able to raise more money for the rental fees.

There are better ways at correcting a child than simply using the rod all the time. Continuous use of the rod will eventually loose its intended corrective power...

Your grammar is plenty. grin

Spare the rod and watch that child rot before you.

Although I agree with you that overuse of the rod will eventually make it deviate from it's intended purpose, but I firmly believe the rod should be for selected situations, and the one in the op is one of those situations.

I am sure the woman didn't just beat the child just for that silly action of flushing the money; it was coupled with other factors such as how long and hard it took for her to gather the rent money. I can almost feel her frustration.

I don't know the age of the child but if it is a child that can do part time jobs, (s)he will do jobs and pay back that money no matter how long it takes.
And if it is a child that can't work yet, I'll spank you and then deprive you of treats.
Children should be taught that they are responsible for their actions and that some actions might come with adverse reactions.

Let parents too learn to be firm with their children. I know it isn't easy for a complete family unit with the many religious and economic distractions much less a single parent.

Honestly the child should be dealt with..its manner-less for a child to exhibit such act, neighbours will be helping pipo spoil their kids and later help you wash you when the child gets rotten!

That beating is for possessed children and she may not be wrong with her action grin

Seriously, I don't think I will ever set eyes on that child again. Well, that can't happen in Nigeria. It can only happen in countries where children tell their parents" Fvck you dad, damn you mum"

Hahaha!

Ishilove is back and better.

Please tell, will any degree of flogging bring the money back?

The child may even sustain some bruises after the flogging which may require medical attention (and you will agree that medical care isn't free of charge).

Personally, using the rod on a child will be the last option.

That child deserves a good beating and i will surely give him/her what she is asking for. He/she did not see any other thing to flush down the toilet it is the hard earned money for rent she chose to display her anger with. I will make sure i avoid injuring the child tho, but smiley she will learn.

The mother lost her nerve due to the consequences she will have to cope with without the money so I am not judging her. Yet I believe that she went too far by hurting the child in such a way that it resulted in a blue eye and a bleeding nose.

Like uboma said, maybe the child is so young that it doesn't even know the value of this amount of money. I also believe that we should teach our children that violence is not an option unless it is for self-defense.

However, taking the child away from its mother is another overreaction.

Straight outta my mind. The only difference is dat I will not massage his/her body after the beating instead he/she will kneel down raise his/her hands up and close his/her eyes for two hours

Every man's reaction would depend on a lot of factors that defines that very society. And this is why we need to raise kids with the ugly bitter truth irrespective of what the world present to them.

As a father you're still in charge any screw ups is your fault and as a mother your value system must be crystal clear after all children learn from parents .
The woman failed in her job.
Re: What Would You Do In This Situation? by Nature8(m): 7:57pm On Oct 07, 2015
Weather you kill the child or not, it can never bring back the money again.. The best thing to do is to discipline him/her and make him/her to know that what him/her did was very wrong, not to keep hitting and beating him/her as if he killed somebody.. Although it hurts alot, esp when you remember that it's money for your rent.. But there's nothing you can do rather than to endure..
