Niger air force bombs Boko Haram base, arrests 20 militants

NIAMEY (Reuters) - Niger's air force bombed a Boko Haram base in the country's southeast and arrested more than 20 militants, security sources said on Thursday, in its biggest counter-attack in eight months.

Members of the Islamist militant group based mostly in northeastern Nigeria have repeatedly attacked the Lake Chad area, including Niger's southern border region of Diffa.

Government forces tracked the militants after a soldier was killed when a military vehicle was blown up by remote control by the group near Lake Chad on Monday, the sources said.

"Our air forces destroyed this nest, but we do not yet have an official death toll," a military officer said. Soldiers arrested the remaining fighters.

In October, Niger's parliament approved a three-month extension of a 15-day state of emergency in Diffa in order to boost security.

A long-awaited 8,700 regional task force is set to begin joint raids on Boko Haram's last enclaves when the rainy season ends soon, the top U.N. official in West Africa said.

Reps want military commands in recaptured territories

House of Representatives yesterday asked Defence Headquarters, DHQ, to embark on establishment of military commands in all territories reclaimed from Boko Haram terrorists in the North East. The action, the Reps said, would enhance the protection of those territories. This is even as they asked the Federal Government to urgently clear all wreckages of military hardware scattered across the recovered territories in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, and also assist the victims and families of landmine explosions in the North East zone. This followed a motion brought by Adamu Kamale and Asabe Vilita on the urgent need for cleanup of wreckages of military hardware and landmine in the North East zone. The Reps noted that the successes recorded by the Nigerian armed forces and other security operatives in the fight against Boko Haram in the North East had led to the recovery of several local government areas previously under the control of the insurgents, especially between March and April 2015, which had resulted in hundreds of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, returning to their various homes.

A lot of M1A2 Abrams tanks were hit by IEDs during the battle of Fallujah. While temporarily put out of action, the crew always managed to survive, and the tanks were fixed. This MK3 Vickers tank, cannot survive a well placed RPG shot, talkless of an IED blast. Apart from the T-72AV, the other tanks in the N.A Armoured Corps are metal coffins.

Actually you are right ; but what magnitude of I.E.D are we talking about? Like the vickers MBT in the picture can still be fixed and back into action, talking of the crews the changes of survival is 50-50. Have seing a MOWAG APC seriously damaged the body was totally and 100% blown off into pieces and all the crew escaped with minor injuries, I think av posted the pictures.

Inside Special Forces: Nigeria’s most-feared fighting unit

Many Special Forces units around the world are created to deal with specific security problems, and go on to become forces to be reckoned with in the military, complementing efforts of regular personnel. With the war against Boko Haram terrorists assuming dangerous dimensions, Nigeria’s own Special Forces unit was born. Daily Trust took a peek into their world.

Forces units around the world are created to deal with specific security problems, and go on to become forces to be reckoned with in the military, complementing efforts of regular personnel. With the war against Boko Haram terrorists assuming dangerous dimensions, Nigeria’s own Special Forces unit was born. Daily Trust took a peek into their world.

Extreme times call for extreme methods, goes the phrase. So, with the growing brazenness of terror group Boko Haram in the North-East, the Nigerian government proceeded to create a Special Forces unit, a team of elite military personnel trained for extreme battle scenarios. Trained in an Eastern European country, the troops, drawn from the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, make up a fierce fighting force that is proving to be effective in necessary areas.
What makes the Special Forces unit such a dangerous, effective one? A military insider disclosed that some reasons are intense martial arts and survival training, sophisticated weapons handling and the array of tech at their disposal. “Without giving away too much,” the source said, “The Nigerian Special Forces are not personnel to be trifled with, by anyone.”
No easy job
Their reputation grows by the day, too, with captured insurgents revealing that Boko Haram commanders often issuing stern warnings to their fighters to avoid run-ins with the Special Forces unit troops. A Defence source even attributes that to the doggedness of the men in pursuing, sometimes even hunting, insurgents and engaging them. He offered an anecdote, wherein a group of Boko Haram terrorists where approaching and the men grabbed their weapons and kit and cheerfully engaged the insurgents in a brief but victorious encounter.
The nature of their operation makes it impossible to be reported in the mainstream, owing to the tradition worldwide which sees Special Forces units’ activities cloaked in secrecy. It is that mystery, however, which additionally makes them effective, according to military experts.
The unit, also, played a key part in the dislodgement of Boko Haram from once-dreaded Sambisa Forest.
Security insiders told Daily Trust that there has never been any doubt on the capabilities of Nigerian officers and soldiers. “We all know the issues have to do with training and equipment,” one said, adding that the coming of the Special Forces unit has proven once again that the Nigerian military is up to the task.
In the beginning
The Special Forces unit first assembled in Bauchi, from where they were escorted to Borno State, where the need for their unique skill sets was dire. When they arrived, the Bama axis was too hot, so they were deployed there and were said to have performed effectively. During those particular operations, they were constantly on the offensive, in many cases sending insurgents running.
The Special Forces were so effective that observers mistook them for the mercenaries said to have been hired by the government of the day, probably because they wore uniforms which looked nothing like the civilian populace had seen before. They are also known for using the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, as well as being instrumental in weakening and dislodging many Boko Haram camps in Borno State. In addition, they operate in Yobe and Adamawa states.
Secret wars
When Daily Trust requested information regarding the Special Forces unit, Army Spokesman Colonel Sani Usman responded thus: “No country discloses information about its Special Forces, Nigeria inclusive.” But he added that the nation does have such a unit fighting terrorists alongside their colleagues, “and they are doing creditably well.”
Colonel Usman also stressed the need to remember the efforts of regular troops on ground in the North-East. “The fight against terrorism in Nigeria is a collective responsibility among the Armed Forces, the police and other security forces,” he added.
Sources in Maiduguri also commended the present administration. “Our military personnel are certainly better-equipped now, with higher morale. But more needs to be done,” one source said.
Special circumstances
Special forces and special operations forces are military units trained to perform unconventional missions. Special Forces, as they would come to be recognised, emerged in the early 20th century, with a significant growth in the field during the Second World War. Depending on the country, a Special Forces unit may perform some of the following functions: airborne operations, counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, covert ops, direct action, hostage rescue, high-value targets/manhunting, intelligence operations, mobility operations, and unconventional warfare.
Special Forces have played an important role throughout the history of warfare, whenever the aim was to achieve disruption by “hit and run” and sabotage, rather than more traditional conventional combat. Other significant roles lay in reconnaissance, providing essential intelligence from near or among the enemy and increasingly in combating irregular forces, their infrastructure and activities.
Special Forces have been used in both wartime and peacetime military operations such as the Laotian Civil War, 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, Vietnam War, South African Border War, Falklands War, the Iranian Embassy siege (London), the Japanese Embassy hostage crisis (Lima), and the raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.
End in sight?
A Nigerian Army source told Daily Trust that while the activities of the Special Forces unit in the North-East are heartwarming, lessons need to be learnt. “While the government has tried in the area of equipment, there are some basic things that are still missing. Borno is an operation area. Go round Maiduguri and see our soldiers. Majority of them do not have helmets and bulletproof vests. That is not how it should be.”
The source noted that while many places have been liberated, soldiers still mount roadblocks because there are mines and other explosive devices all over the place.
“Training, equipping and maintaining military personnel is not cheap, but Nigeria should learn to maintain a good fighting force. We have gallant soldiers who require refresher trainings and sophisticated equipment, bringing them up to par with any army in the world,” the source said.

Curled from daily trust.

"Winning the hearts and mind". Nice write up. Its heart warming to see that the IG is also up and doing in tying up its own end of the counter insurgency plan.
That phase is very critical as this stage of the fight is where BH would definitely retreat to. Bringing in the DSS, NSCDC and the police to work hand in hand is a wonderful idea.

Like i said before, this is the phase that would fully test our security agencies and civil populace ability to waid off security threats. It is going to involve well co-ordinated intelligence gathering and quick response. The enemy will remain invincible but then still very potent to strike. This phase has no time frame as its going to be continous community policing.

Yeap tnks man.... to finally beat BH to the ground and not to be heard never again we need our security agencies especially the SSS/DSS and military intelligence to step up there game, especially if we want to end these spontaneous suicide bombings. You know it's not really the number of boots we av on ground that will end these war ?
If not am afraid these would just be a kind of continuous war or game, I pray God forbid !!

The truth is, no MBT is fully immune to IEDs.. Especially if the explosion takes place anywhere below the hull. Even the M1A2 Abrams tanks had to be fitted with the TUSK system to enable them fight in urban areas. The use of artillery shells by BH is a really serious problem that even MRAP might not be able to defeat. However, the evidence is clear ; BH is a spent force. A sinking man will hang on to anything, even if its just a leaf...that explains the reckless use of IEDs by the group.

Terrorist On Wanted List Arrested At Abuja Airport

Aviation officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, yesterday arrested a suspected Boko Haram member who was listed among the 100 wanted terrorist kingpins recently published by the Nigerian Army.

The director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, confirmed this in a press statement circulated electronically to newsmen yesterday.

This came barely two weeks after the chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai published posters containing photos of the 100 most wanted Boko Haram kingpins in Maiduguri, the headquarters of ‘Operation Lafiya Dole’.

The posters were printed in durable runner broadsheets.

Aviation officers who may have seen the widely circulated picture posters were said to have noticed the wanted man as he was about to board a Lagos-bound flight.

“The declaration of 100 suspected Boko Haram terrorists has started to pay the desired dividend as one of them was arrested as he attempted to flee,” Col Usman said.

“Today (Sunday) at Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, a man suspected to be one of the wanted suspected Boko Haram terrorists, Chindo Bello, was apprehended by Aviation security as he was boarding Aero Contractors’ Airline flight to Lagos. The suspect has since been handed over to the military intelligence for interrogation and prosecution.”

The army spokesman thanked the eagle-eyed and patriotic security agents and good citizens for the tip-off that led to the arrest of the suspect.

He also reiterated the Nigerian Army’s call on Nigerians to be more vigilant and assist security agencies with information about the wanted terrorists, their sponsors and other criminals living among innocent citizens.

The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, on Monday urged troops in the Northeast to remain focused in their final push to end insurgency in the country.
Mr. Buratai, who visited the front line unit of 113 Task Battalion in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno, commended the troops for the successes recorded so far.
“You have done well and you must maintain the tempo.
“You must be on the offensive and waste no time in giving a final push in ending Boko Haram.’’
He assured the soldiers that there was no cause for alarm over their salaries and allowances, stressing that the issue was being sorted out.
“There may be a little delay, but everything is being sorted out,’  Mr. Buratai said.
The Army chief was also at the 118 Task Force Battalion, where he urged the troops to sustain the final offensive against insurgents.

Advancing Troops Clear More Boko Haram Camps

In a statement signed by Colonel Tukur Ismail Gusau, media coordinator, the military stated that in furtherance to the ongoing offensive operations to clear Boko Haram insurgents’ activities troops conducted clearance and confidence building operations in Bale along Bitta and Damboa axis.

“The Boko Haram terrorists on sighting the advancing troops towards their location, they fled in disarray abandoning looted food items and other personal effects. These include a Grinding Machine, Dane Guns and Bicycles as well as Boko Haram terrorists’ hoisted flag which was brought down and destroyed the troops,” it said.

“The formation continues to dominate the area and in order to deny the terrorists freedom of action and frustrate their nefarious intents and acts.”

Major General Yusha’u Mahmood Abubakar, the theatre commander of operation Lafiya Dole, praised the troops for the achievements so far and encouraged them to keep the speed so that the deadline set to end Boko Haram terrorists’ activities in Nigeria could be achieved. According to him the troops are in high spirit and their fighting efficiency remains very high.

One of the Boko Haram survivors, who recently narrated her ordeal to the newsmen, said that the most terrifying thing for the insurgents is Buhari’s deadline.

The president tasked service chiefs to end the insurgency in three months time.

Army Nabs Another Wanted Boko Haram Suspect Of Cameroonian Descent

According to a spokesman for the army, Colonel Sani Usman, the suspect, Ishaku Wardifen, was nabbed by vigilant troops of 23 Brigade Special Battalion at a check point in Maiha, Adamawa State.

He said that preliminary interrogation revealed that “the suspected terrorist is a Cameroonian citizen”.

He also explained that a visual matching with photographs on the poster of the 100 wanted Boko Haram terrorists released by the Nigerian Army last month, showed that he clearly resembles the suspect on serial number 22 on the list.

The suspect has been handed over to military intelligence for further investigation and possible prosecution.

UN supports Somalia against potential Daesh, al-Shabaab collaboration in Yemen

AFP reports that Somali Prime Minister Omar Sharmarke met with the UN Security Council on Monday, warning that Daesh and Somali-extremist group al-Shabaab might take advantage of Yemen's instability and collaborate there.

Prime Minister Sharmarke called for UN intervention to end the conflict in Yemen before the extremist groups start using the country "as a conduit or a launching pad."

Al-Shabaab recently switched their allegience from al-Qaeda to Daesh. While Somali government forces pushed al-Shabaab out of the major cities in 2011, the extremist organization launched an attack on a hotel in the capital city, Mogadishu, last week, killing at least a dozen people.

Prime Minister Sharmake highlighted the hotel attack in his request to the UN Security Council, stating, "that though Somalia and its international partners have won the battles against al-Shabaab, they have yet to be demolished."

The Somali government fears more attacks if al-Shabaab and Daesh gain the ability to coordinate and organize in nearby Yemen. Yemen's major port city, Aden, is only 163 miles from the Somali port of Berbera.

Prime Minister Sharmarke's concerns are backed by Ismail Ould Chikh Ahmed, the UN envoy for Yemen. AFP reports that in a recent statement, Ahmed said extremist groups such as Daesh are taking advantage of the unstable and often chaotic environment in Yemen and becoming a serious threat to the region.

Prime Minister Sharmarke requested more support and funding from the Security Council, "to stand with Somalia against this terror network."

The Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution to increase the UN's logistical support to the African union, AMISOM, and its joint operations with the Somali army.

The UN envoy for Somalia, Nicholas Kay, supported the Somali Prime Minister's statements to the Security Council, stating "Somalia is well advanced in its political and security transformation from failed to recovering state."

Nigerian Troops Have Incapacitated Boko Haram Terrorists

The Theater Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-General Yushau Abubakar, has said that the Boko Haram terrorists have been been degraded and weakened by the military after series of operations.

Leadership reports that Abubakar made this known while addressing troops of 114 Task Force Battalion in Betta, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno on Tuesday, November 10, 2015.

“Boko Haram terrorists have been degraded, you have seen them, they are not trained, you have seen their capability, for those you have captured you have seen what they look like.

“We have no time to waste, we must move forward by ending terrorism in the North East now,” the commander said.

Abubakar also that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-General Tukur Buratai, has expressed his delight with the work being done by the task force in recent times.

“The COAS is very much impressed by the successes recorded by you in the fight against Boko Haram.

“He has asked me to deliver his goodwill messages to you.

“Since I was appointed as the Theater Commander, the COAS had visited the state five times and for each of the visit, he spent at least three days which implies that this operation is very important.

“The onus is now left to us. We have to pay back by getting more committed to our task of crushing Boko Haram within the timeline.

“More importantly, we must wipe out Boko Haram terrorists so that the people can come back and live their normal lives.

“I want to assure you that there is no operational problem or logistic problem that is not known by the appropriate superior authority.

“We have lots of containers coming to Maiduguri and most of them had spare parts, ammunition and other logistic requirements for this operation.

“Gentlemen, let us take this operation at heart and finish the job once and for all.

“Let us finish this job as it is expected and then we face other jobs,” he explained.

Only yesterday, reports emerged that the Nigerian troops successfully destroyed more dens of the Islamist sect, as the COAS also asked the troops to give the insurgents a final push.
