Niger police seize bomb-making materials in passenger bus

NIAMEY (Reuters) - Security forces in Niger's volatile northern region of Agadez have seized large quantities of bomb components being transported in a passenger bus, a local government official said on state-owned radio late on Tuesday.

Police special forces discovered 620 explosives, 41 fuses and 310 electrical cables hidden in the bus during an inspection. In a separate operation, police arrested six bandits and impounded three vehicles as well as firearms, a rocket and military uniforms.

Speaking at a ceremony during which the materials and the arrested men were exhibited to reporters, Agadez's governor, Colonel Major Fodé Camara, did not specify when the seizures were made.

"We believe these actions will help reduce insecurity in the region. We would like a bit more collaboration from the population and much more intelligence," he said.

Agadez lies along one of West Africa's primary smuggling routes for drugs, weapons and migrants and is also known as an area of operations for Islamist militants.

Islamist suicide bombers killed around 20 people and wounded dozens of others in 2013 during a coordinated dawn assault on a uranium mine run by France's Areva and a military base in Agadez.

U.S. offers $27 million in rewards for information on al Shabaab commanders

NAIROBI (Reuters) – The United States has announced rewards worth a total $27 million (17.76 million pound) for information on six top commanders in the Somali Islamist militant group al Shabaab, which has launched attacks across East Africa.

The U.S. Department of State said on its website that this included up to $6 million for information on Abu Ubaidah, the al Shabaab leader who took command in September 2014 after his predecessor, Ahmed Godane, was killed by a U.S. missile strike.

The United States, other Western powers and countries in the region see the fight against the al Qaeda-aligned group as a vital part of the battle to prevent Islamist militancy spreading in East Africa and beyond.

Under the Rewards for Justice programme, up to $5 million was also offered for information on three other commanders, including Mahad Karate, also known as Abdirahman Mohamed Warsame, who is accused of playing a major role in the Garissa university attack in Kenya in April that killed almost 150 people.

The two others, Maalim Daud and Hassan Afgooye, were behind activities, such as training, recruiting and financing for the group, the State Department said.

Al Shabaab ruled Somalia for several years until 2011, when its forces were driven out of the capital Mogadishu by African Union troops. Since then, it has lost most of its main strongholds but still controls swathes of countryside and still launches attacks.

Among its most high-profile assaults was a raid on Westgate shopping mall in Kenya’s capital Nairobi in September 2013, that left 67 people dead. It also launched attacks in 2010 in Uganda, which, like Kenya, has troops in Somalia fighting the group.

The U.S. programme offered up to $3 million each for information on two other senior figures in the group.

The U.S. State Department has offered rewards for other al Shabaab leaders in the past under its Rewards for Justice programme.

The programme, launched in 1984, has paid more than $125 million to more than 80 individuals who provided “actionable information that put terrorists behind bars or prevented acts of international terrorism worldwide”, the State Department said.

Troops rescue over 60 people, kill four terrorists:

Nigerian troops killed four suspected Boko Haram suspects and set free 61 people, mainly women and children, held by the jihadist group in the flashpoint northeastern Borno state, the army said Thursday.

In an operation, troops under air cover cleared Boko Haram camps "and in the process rescued 61 persons abducted and held captive by the Boko Haram terrorists," the army said in a statement.

"The rescued persons were mainly women and children," the military said, adding that troops also "killed four terrorists and arrested one."

The army had last October 28 also said it freed more than 330 people, mostly women and children, from Boko Haram's Sambisa forest stronghold in an operation in the volatile northeast. Of the survivors, 192 were children while 138 were women.

There was no independent confirmation of the army claims.

The military has in recent months claimed a string of successes against Boko Haram in its quest to end the hardline Islamist group's six-year insurgency.

In early August, the army said it had freed 178 people, including more than 100 children, following an operation near Aulari town, about 70 kilometres (44 miles) south of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power in May on a pledge to crush Boko Haram, has given his military commanders until the end of December to defeat the rebels.

Nigeria Army Repels Boko Haram Attack On Gwoza, Kills Seven

An attempt by Boko Haram terrorists to attack Nigerian Army’s blocking position early this morning in Gwoza, Borno state has been repelled by the troops.

According to a statement by the Nigerian army sent to Naij.com, the encounter which started at about 5.00am today, November 13, lasted for almost two hours.

Although details are still being collated, s 7 terrorists were gunned down and the following weapons recovered; 1 Toyota Hilux vehicle, 11 AK-47 rifles, 1 shilka gun, 1 rocket propelled grenade tube, 6 hand grenades. Others include several rounds of shilka gun and machine gun ammunition.

Presently, troops are on hot pursuit of the attackers into Sambisa forest with a view to eliminate all of them while the Nigerian Air Force is bombarding their locations through aerial attacks.

It will be recalled that the Boko Haram  terrorists ability as a coherent fighting force has been degraded over time by troops through relentless attacks, patrols and aerial bombardments.
