This looks more like a REVENUE generation exercise by Buhari than a concern for hygiene.
If it were a concern for hygiene, NAFDAC would have fined more risky companies but with LESS funds to pay heavy fines. Don't you agree
Can't they start with Guinness? Or do you know how many times they've visited and cautioned them about their unhygienic environment? They don't just slam fines anyhow bro.

The weight of the fine will depend on how many times you've be warned, the effect your bad practice will have on the overall quality of your product and the distributed quantity of your product; you and I know how many bottles of Guinness will go down today.

The primary aim of fine is to deter not to generate revenue. Too big fines will cripple industries and come back to hunt the country. Small small I beg nafdac and co..

I raised my point off of assuming they violated the regulation. My counter to your argument came about because it sounded like you were opposed to fines even if Guinness are in the wrong

Good move but the fines are just not defined by any standard. I hope we are not sending wrong messages to investors and employers of labour, cos I know employees lay off are usually indirect effect of these punitive actions.
We have labor laws here that govern this multinationals it's just that they have been dormant for a while and it gives these guys reasons to behave anyhow or even evade tax...I'm sure Nigige will activate this...All those Lebanese and Indians treating Nigerians working for them like slaves will wake up. The truth is they won't leave Naija no matter the fines because their market is here and we also have the human resources. Look at the oil companies no matter how much they were kidnapped and their pipelines destroyed them still remain they go PH and dem still remain for Naija. I hope Nigeria local content (nnpc) in the oil and gas will also bring their search light in these ioc and also design multinational firms.
God bless Nigeria

You see I live in Lagos and had been victim of the government outrageous fine. Someone towed your vehicle away for a supposedly illegal parking and you had to cough out N70,000. Some others cough out over a N100,000 for obstructing BRT lane. At the end of the day government came out regularly and declared big big internal generated revenue. Of course people groaned and it almost cost apc governorship votes in lagos with Agbaje capitalising on it in his campaign. LASTMA guys sensing no one will be willing to pay such exorbitant fines resorted to intimidating people to bribe them and they demand outrageous bribe too. At the end Ambode came in and complained and clamp that on LASTmA with its attendant consequence of traffic gridlock lagos currently witness. The irony of the Lastma fines is that Road Safety have the same offence and collect tokens as fines compared to what LASTMA charges.
Back to the issue on focus, mtn has been levied fine and they currently groan to pay. Infact just yesterday the new ceo said he will explore ways to reduce the fine. If they can conveniently pay they won't desperately seek to reduce it. Now we have another fine running into billion. Whether guinness can pay or not , we will wait to see. However my own opinion is that we fine people primarily to deter them from committing the same offence again. The revenue generation is secondary. If we fine our few companies out of existence, Nigerians bear the brunt. Government needs to put this into consideration. I know the former LIRS boss is now the FIRS boss, I hope it is not that they want to replicate lagos model at national level. They have to remember that Ambode had to grant clemency to many motorist recently to many motorists who couldnt afford the fines levied on them. Their vehicles had to be returned to them without paying any dine. Also many companies and business owners in lagos regularly complain of multiple and outrageous taxation in Lagos and often use bribery to help out themselves.
Our government needs to think through its action and look at long term rather than short term effect on its populace.

Bros, the timing of this fine so soon after that of MTN is more than suspicious. Why weer they not fined during the previous visits/warnings?
Guinness may go to court or may decide it is not worthwhile taking on a potentially "hostile" government.

As I said if businesses are being fined ANYHOW, it will lead to higher prices first and increased UNEMPLOYMENT subsequently, as owners will do everything to keep their profit MARGINS.
If you tighten a screw too much you are likely to break the wood/metal material that you are working with. Hope you understand the analogy
This is standard business modus operandi anywhere.

Its amazing how short and terribly slow your sense of reasoning has become recently, so because you need to promote your FDI you should expose the lives of innocent citizens to danger? In addition, ask yourself why did MTN immidiately renewed their licence even with the N1tr fine, then you will know these companies make greater % of their profit in Nigeria which makes it almost impossible for them to leave just because of fines. You can see that even only your sense of reasoning requires a minister.

Why do countries secede? what will be our claim to the international community? have we dealt with our local crises as individuals, Kindred, Community, LGA, Constituency, State before clamoring on mistreat from a government that has barely spent 6months? chanting Biafra is only detrimental to the unity of we the igbo's, its in no doubt a case that shouldn't be treated with levity but be sure to have your guns & machete ready when it boils down to the main deal. There are standard for the fine. MTN (200,000 NGN per subscribers for 5.2 million subscribers), SKYE Bank ( 10% of the money not remitted) and am sure there is a standard for this too else the companies will not pay.
