The Nigerian Police Force, NPF has announced that bail is free in the country.

The NPF has also released contact details of the Compliant Response Unit, CRU where Nigerians can drop their complains if they're ever asked to pay bail. You can also drop other complaints using the contact details.

I think this difficult phone numbers make this a furtile effort. There is a reason why 911 was chosen. We never start. Next time you see a similar poster, the numbers would have changed. No one bothers saving these numbers. You have a different set of numbers for it residential estate. Another set for work environment. We are tired of these disjointed numbers. Well, I am tired.

Bail is absolutely FREE on notice. Until you have Police Wahala and you are whisked away to station. Come back and tell us if your bail was FREE.

This is a laudable step in the right direction. The impunity with which our police officers go about the issue of bail and ancillary matters is baffling. As a lawyer, I find it very frustrating the way our police officers would just arrest and lock up suspects in the cells and wander away without first taking their statements. All in a bid to extort bail money from the suspects or their relations.

I`ve had the privilege to experience how the police go about their duties in other saner climes. They may invite you for questioning, grant you bail while they pursue further investigations until they are convinced of your culpability, it's then they arrest the suspect and charge him to court promptly. But unfortunately, the reverse is the case here in Nigeria. Our policemen first arrest you, lock you up for days while they look for means to nail you at all costs all in a bid to extort money from you.

I therefore urge our police authorities to go a step further by establishing a Police Complaints Commission with offices in all the state capitals in Nigeria. It should be headed by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) chairman, with members drawn from the Civil Society Organisations, National Human Rights Commission, retired police officers etc. This Commission should be charged with the responsibility of investigating all complaints from the general public against police officers and also mete out appropriate disciplinary measures.

i think 911 is suppose to be for emergencies and not for reporting your complaints about a policeman.
