I do not have maths credit but pass. .. So I support the governor. Depending on your course of study, neither should be compulsory.

But why should a science or engineering student who had grade A and Bs in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Agricultural Science/Geography be denied admission because of a failure or a pass in English Language?

Did he write those subjects in Vernacular?
. Stupid question so that tomorrow he or she will graduate & start making statements like: 'my fellow widows', 'the doctors are responding to treatment', 'I am a youth copper' , etc

I agree with him, the president of Nigeria didn't pass mathematics too.. Yet he is running one of the largest economy in the world.

why set standards at all? We are already living in a free-for-all country.
. & that is why our country is still the way it is.

As much as I love maths...I support this, not everyone has a sound knowledge of calculation,Back then I use to have a friend in art department who speaks English as fluently as FFK and writes like Agarawu23,Buygala,Naijaboiy,Vizkiz and William Shakespare(Lol) , Give him simple expansion he'd spend hours at it and still won't get the answer, Imagine one having A1 in Literature, Government, English and all the art subject but denied admission cox he couldn't have a credit in Maths......Quite pathetic right? It sounds as much
. The only thing pathetic is the fact that he fails maths, it shows he isnt that bright afterall. Any body anticipating to make it in life should at least know the basic maths. No one is saying u must have A1, but at least credit it, so tht if we make u a minister tomorrow (for instance) u wont be looking lost when u r sent on international conferences or meetings where issues concerning the nation's economy is being discussed & u cant make contributions on issues like: inflation, GDP growth, budget deficit etc

Rochas-Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has requested universities in the country and other institutions of higher learning to stop making credit passes in English language and Mathematics compulsory for those seeking admission.

He lamented that the practice of making the two subjects compulsory for admissions has aborted the ambition of many brilliant students who could, for one reason or the other, not credit both subjects, to further their education.

The Governor, who spoke yesterday when the Registrar of the National Examination Council, NECO, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba visited him at the Government House Owerri, with his team, noted that the time has come for all relevant bodies to help the education sector and assist students with the ambition of pursuing higher education.

Okorohausa should stop sermonizing and think of how to generate jobs for the teaming unemployed youths. What's the essence of acquiring the degree when the future is bleak because of unemployment.

You be mumu, what has wrong english got to do with an expert or specialist in medicine, engineering or scientist?

Have you ever heard of Interpreters and Speech writers? How much do they earn compared to the experts and specialists?
. They wont be earning anything because they wont get hired in the first place, if they cant type their CV correctly or express themselves properly during an interview. Even if you do get one through dubious means, you will loose the trust/confidence of your clients/ customers, because..come on..if you go to a hospital & the doctor says..'Madam brought your baby here make i injection am', will u even go near that type of 'doctor'? If you are honest with yourself you know you wont

Hear yourself!

The students that had eight "A"s and a pass or failure in English Language can't write or communicate?

How many Footballers and musicians in Nigeria can pass WAEC English?

We are talking of Nigeria and not any foreign country here and moreover, knowledge of any language adds nothing to ones intelligent quotient.

If USA war college can accept Buhari who scored F9 in mathematics (in WASC) then your logic holds no water.

Comprehend my argument.

Mathematics should be compulsory for Medicine, Sciences and Engineering

while

English Language should be compulsory for Lawyers, Mass Communication and linguistic students

. English is our Lingua Franca & should be compulsory for all even if your studying 'sign language studies' (lol). I dont want my kids going to school to have a maths teacher teach them in pidgin or vernacular. Why should i settle for mediocrity if I can have the best?

until we stop using English as our lingua franca you need to pass it.

A student who can score high grades in other subjects and can not obtain credit in English and mathematics is not brilliant enough for university education. There is stiff competition for admission into our universities therefore there is no need to lower the entry barrier

You mean a person who fails English languade in WAEC cannot write, understand or communicate in English? This is a lie.

not talking about conversation
legal implications
when you sign documents without knowing the meaning court Will not care
they will only ask if this is your signature
no further questions
no, I didn't know what I was signing
this is how billions are lost
not petty business

Some people have eight "A"s and a pass in English and yet are denied admission even with their high Jamb scores.

that's called demand and supply
the VC and Co demand friends and family not As or credit
called survival of the fittest
you have to know what 'fit 'means
see why it's good to be able to speak English or whatever language hr used for day to day transactions

Failing mathematics is not a hinderance to being a successful businessmen in mos[b]
really so why do many of them fall for predatory loans
somebody says he'll borrow you money so long as you pay back 25 naira per month
per 100 naira. let's see how you would calculate this, I dare you to tell me the percentage interest. and I will show you why math hr important

Quote me anywhere. There is no student of that level of IQ that can not score a credit in English. Did he write the exams on those other subjects in vernacular? Credit score is not too much to ask for from UME candidates. University education is not meant for average students. Quota system and admission sharp practices are destroying our tertiary education by allowing dim wits into our citadels.
