AN178 has this sexy slick look that i like,in time we may see several of this planes in africa.considering it could be used for multi role purposes e.g military VIP transport
Definitely a very attractive aircraft, but I feel their are better suited aircraft for the VIP/multi role on the market.

It isn't really that simple. MRAPs cost between $500,000- $1,000,000. If there are 20,000 security forces along the border, those men would need 2,500 MRAPs to convey them.

2,500 x 500,000 = $1.2 billion.

Where is Kenya supposed to get 1.2 billion for MRAPs alone from?

south africa gripen are armed with R-Darter with a range of 60km not meteor AAM .Secondly a gripen has combat radius of 800Km while SU-30 has a 3,000Km radius now who has endurance !
IIRC,this is why the KAF said no the Grip when offered in 2008. Tactically speaking all the shortcomings compared to the Sue make it too defensive minded.
-Single engine
-short range
-combat radar short sighted

Its obvious! Just don't tell the S Africans!

Cheaper to run and maintain

Better in one v one air to air combat

Easyier to deploy from small or improvised runways.

Diffrent needs and requiments.

South Africans claim their Gripen is the best in the world. It's even better than that of Sweden.

Nope we didn't forget anything, anyway the Human machine interface of the SAAF Gripen is South Africa, so is the HMD, not to mention the AAMs.

And we didn't use lower grade components, in fact SAAF fly the most advanced Gripen C/Ds of any country!!

When the opinion comes from SAAB themselves about their own product, then it equals fact.

1. Su-30 is massively expensive to operate, costing around $7000 per flight hour (Grip is ~$3000), newer models of Su30 can cost upwards of $14000 per hour

2. Single engine = less maintenance, therefore lower operating costs and less demand for new parts. Then you take into account that Russian engines arent very good....
- Su30's have serious engine problems, just look at India, they struggle to maintain 50% operationability for their Su30's (their target is ~70%)
- India has recorded no less than 69 engine failures since 2012 and recorded a wopping 35 technical failures in a one year period.

3. Yes, but due to the low RCS of the Gripen it means that it can take on and defeat Su30MKI's in BVR combat

it is not our gripens that are more modern, just that they have more or different stuff. All gripens could use the HMD but we just used them first and though the A-darter is great the Swedish air force has a wider ranger of air to surface weapons. SAAF had many requirements for the gripen that are for us only, but ZA link is the same has Link 16 used by sweeden and others and we use the same EW these days and our radios are unquque for us, thats all really. In short there is no difference betwwen the aicraft only in our use of a HMD, but then again we had a HMD in the late 80s

Not in this case, especially when the man projects sales of over 300 aircrafts after the South-African order. Projections which have proven to be unreliable.
