I think travelling to planets way out out of our system is the way cus Mars will still be as good as dead if the sun goes Red-giant.

Interstellar, watched the movie? gives good insight you know

Yeah, Interstellar, I think I've seem the movie. Man goes on space exploration, leaves behind daughter, son and father-in-law. Discovers some sort of wormhole, sends message to daughter... "Too much Spoiler" tongue

Yeah, gives some nice insight.

Astronomy/astrophysics, the most overlooked aspect of science.

But frankly, who cares if Venus is the morning star, or that there are 3 stars in Orion's belt? Down here on earth, money matters.

Both are correct... But the sun is far from stationary.

The sun and this entire system is part of a spiral galaxy and due to the action of gravity the arms of spiral galaxies swirl round the galactic center..

The sun is located in the Orions arm of the galaxy and so swirls with the arm around the galactic center.

So yes the Sun has no Orbit in this solar system but rather is the center of this system with every planet in this solar system orbiting it but in turn the sun orbits the center of the galaxy.

Take it like this.. The moon orbits the earth while the earth orbits the sun.. that is same way the sun in turn orbits the center of the galaxy.

Hope this is clear
thank you

have'nt watch interstellar undecided but is still rep "the martian"
Re: 10 Facts About The Sun You Probably Didn't Know by Nobody: 6:22pm On Feb 14, 2016
johnydon22:
Yeah my fingers are crossed on that..

We can start from Mars.. Melting Mars core with gain mars a magnetic field to protect it's naked barren world from solar winds and then minimize it's atmospheric loss.

then mars can be restored gradually
But there is no need to waste time on mars because if this our sun goes in to extinct in coming 400million years, all the nine planet or more in this sun galaxy will go also, the Saviour at that time will be the discovery of another sun with a habitable planets surrounding it

400Million years is too near for the sun to go Red-giant.. More like 4.5billion years.

But i think extra-terrestrial planets are a better bet

PLS d sun Is not white in Colour.... The following pix are from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory... Chemically, about three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen , while the rest is mostly helium . The remaining 1.69% (equal to 5,600 times the mass of Earth) consists of heavier elements, including oxygen , carbon, neon and iron..... The Sun is like a massive ball of Fire.

[b]As Earth based life forms we all open our eyes to get familiar with the G-type star that hosts our planet which we know as the Sun.

It provides an enormous amount of energy and support that it is not a joke that we would not be here without it..

Let us quickly run through 10 basic facts about our dear giant ball of Gas and perhaps get to know it a little bit better.

1.THE SUN IS WHITE..

What shocked Yeah some of you might find this unusual judging with the fact that we all see this Star and we know the color it shows us right?

Seriously, it is even referred to as a yellow dwarf sometimes by the Astronomical body..

But in actuality Our sun is not yellow but white, its an average star that appear white in color ..

Light travels in a spectrum of distinct colors (All colors actually).. White is not a color but the combination of all colors or put it in a more correct way.. WHITE is the source of all other colors..

so when this light from our sun hits the earth the earth's atmosphere scatter the light from the sun. The blue wavelength of light is scattered in the atmosphere giving our sky a blue color But the sky is actually colorless except for clouds

The yellow wavelength are longer light wavelengths and so are more visible from the earth's surface giving the Sun a yellowish color from the surface.

The atmosphere is also the reason why the stars far from us appear to be twinkling when we see then at night..

and
wot of the green, colour??

Bro this is what is known as False-color imaging used to bring an imaged object toned down to a more eye receptive colouring.

F-C image of the sun

here is a true-colour imaging

The sun is a white star though emits more yellow color spectrum slightly than others but in actuality the yellow spectrum difference is too small.

The sun appears white in colour .. the images you posted above are false colour rendering to show more details which is impossible if rendered in true colour

thanks boss

[b]10.Revolution

This is for the ones that think the sun is stationary... Well sorry but it is far from it..

Moons revolve around planets
Planets around stars
Stars around center of a galaxy
the galaxies orbit some bigger galaxies or in a dance of gravitational beat.

all matter in the universe goes on a jolly ride with the expansion of space time..

Our universe is constantly in motion.... Nothing is stagnant or stationary, there is always motion..

The sun is located in the milky way galaxy, in the Orion's arm of the galaxy which is one of the arms of the spiral galaxy..

Like every spiral galaxy, all the arms are swirling around the center of the galaxy.. Stars with planets, clouds and dust.

So our sun alongside with all the solar system is in orbit around the milky way galaxy..

the milky way galaxy is 100,000light years in diameter, the sun (solar system) is about 27,000 light years away from the galactic center.

so it takes about ±250 million years for the sun to complete one resolution around the galactic center.

So yes the sun is not stationary... Picture below: The single dot points where the sun and entire planetary system is in the whole milky way galaxy

I still can't wrap my mind around how we still have stars that are far far bigger than our own star. How minute the earth is comparison to the universe. How insignificant we all are in comparison to the universe. How big the universe is to contain billion of stars.

To even imagine if I die and reincarnate millions of time I won't still witness the sun finally dying 5 billion years away!

Annoying that in my lifetime I will never witness a spaceship landing on the sun talkless of the universe.

This is crazy.

i think terraforming an entire planet would be incredibly expensive

Attention should be placed more on technologies such as warp drives, its theorecticly possible.
we have found gravitational waves something einstein himself thoght impossible so in science alot can happen

i believe if negative mass can be found or observed then we would move alot closer to technologies such as warp drives

Interesting piece. I have always been fascinated about the sun and other planetary bodies.

But, i think its actually not wrong to say that the sun is stationary when we look at it in relation to the solar system. But, when looked at in relation to the Galaxy/milky way, then it is correct to say the sun is in motion.

The sun literally gives live to the earth. A day should be set aside by every country on earth to celebrate this powerful star called the SUN.

just one galaxy contains hundreds of billions (about 200 billion thereabout) of stars, and same value (approximately not exact) goes for galaxies... so you have trillions if not zillions of stars.
(hope I ain't giving you a headache?)
