]Obviously Nigeria too immerced in more important and pressing issue now. Returning of this 'okuko igbo' is the least of our problems in this country right now.

So, British Govt. Keep it for as much as you want.

Funny enough, I just told my dad same thing. Am even of the opinion that if there's a way Nigeria government can arrange with them to be sending part of the proceeds generated from tourist visits to the cockerel down to naija. cheesy

I believe the cockerel will even attract more tourist in its present location than it will in Nigeria. undecided

It's mind blogging how present day Nigerian youths will see the evidence of immense theft and destruction of a civilization, And still come to the conclusion that africans should be greatful.

The effects of post traumatic colonial syndrome.

how is it a benin statue, when it is called "okukor" which means cock in ibo.
Try saying OKHORKHOR and you will understand why the Europeans call it anything close.

It belongs to Nigeria cool cool cool

For the sake of continuity, it might be better to leave it where it is. If that statue had been in Nigeria, it would have being either lost, stolen, sold, or vandalized.

argue with the British people that said it was taken from Benin...a lot of artefact were stolen during the Benin invasion, they were taken from the palace of the oba of Benin. .Some have been traced to Britain and other European countries

Okukor means chicken in Igbo language. What a coincidence.

The same meaning in Yoruba. But please and please, it is a Benin sculpture. No need of bringing tribal intrigues on this matter.

:

The sculpture, named “Okukor”, along with
several other Benin Bronze items, was looted
by the British during the ‘Punitive Expedition’
in 1897.
. They brought Christianity (war) and stole away our culture. Na God go fire their Jehovah. Muslims you arent left out too o. Mohammed and Jesus are burning in hell fire already.

What does that tell you. Those who built it had a civilization that could maintain it. The British came in and destroyed it. Now it's a zoo. And the descendant of those who built it are so far mentally weak to appreciate a work of art... Now the thieves are now the ones that appreciate it's value.. undecided

I understand that nigeria is a zoo. But that does not equate celebrating weakness. People like you built that!!

I beg you. Have respect for your heritage. Your forebears were not inept of ideas. Evidence: the whiteman came and stole their work of art.

Okukor is the ibo name for Chicken. Is it same in Benin? Else how did it get that name, or did the Binis also loot the artifact when it colonised the region? Lets just be sure of the origin of the piece.
