Islam is a religion I hold nothing against and whatever laws that suit its Adherents. However, considering the assumed secular nature of Nigeria and more importantly, Kano in its mega-City status; I sincerely believe that a kind of corridor should be provided to accomodate those single ladies who for genuine reasons find themselves in Kano without any family(ies) but have to pass the night there.

Well, it is not completely correct to think that in the North unmarried couple don't pass the night together in a Hotel. If you have been to Damaturu, Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe town and couple of other Cities, you will agree with me that the South is not having exclusive right to such claims you made against them.

Don't mind them. Who patronizes those prostitutes in Lahadin Makole?

Pretence all the way!

I don't think that it has been there because I slept in a hotel alone when I went to Kano some years back on official tour
What year was that and how old were you then and who made the booking, and what was the nature of your job and your visit, then the location and rating of the hotel N.B don't confused it for brothel.

Some foreigners working in this country can't speak good English but they still carry out their jobs according to specifications. Will u say they are quacks? What is most important is service delivery. U are also quick to say that that is my level. Which level are u in life? U think u are enlightened. The government should have simply banned hotel business instead of the undue infringement on rights and unfair treatment for the female gender.

Its not the government but the hotel proprietors themselves, this should be quite evident from the uploaded copy of the promissory undertaking which the guests are asked to sign; note the lack of reference to any specific law as you might have expected had such existed.

Many hotels do not want high profile activity of prostitutes because it undermines their image and ward off respectable clients and take it upon themselves to sanitize their business image.
I am sure even Lagos or Abuja Hilton would not want prostitutes to be freely moving around within the corridors of their hotels.

The heading of the thread did not help as it was quite misleading; it should have read 'Unmarried Couple Not Welcomed In Most Hotel Rooms In Kano, because the hoteliers were clearly appealing to prospective male customers not to share rooms with women other than their wives; rather than directly banning single women from securing such rooms for themselves.

Some of the reactions in this thread are quite Pavlovian, especially from bigots who clearly could not hold themselves from their usual vitriol against the north and the religion of Islam.

To them I would like to ask this question, " what state in Nigeria and in most so called advanced countries including America where you do not have police raids on brothels, hotels and notorious targets of prostitution? Why then the double standards against Kano simply because such raids may have involved the Hisba; is prostitution legal in Nigeria; why then should a state such as Kano not put in place measures that could at least attempt to curb such illegal activity?
Lastly, should Kano hoteliers not feel free to adjust their standards in line with the cultural norms and value of their ppl - why is this so difficult to understand?

So a single woman can longer travel far away from home and get a temporary accommodation in a hotel while she is in a new place ?

Single women are free to travel and can lodge in most hotels in Kano without any hassle especially if their mission is transparently obvious they are not there for prostitution - there is no law stopping them doing so.

Frm most of the comment i read here, i just learned that most of the people here lack modesty or they mis interprete the word but the only truth is that there are singles and there are prostitudes this is why u have to present credible evidence b4 u are given a hotel room

So let me get something straight. A single woman has to provide credible evidence that she is not a prostitute to stay at the hotel but a man who brings in a prostiitute to the hotel doesn't need to bring credible evidence. All he has to do is just sign her in as his wife.

BTW, its a Muslim North where Sharia holds ground. So anybody that has problem with their culture over there but is wont to visit/stay should just bear it in mind that when you're in Rome , behave like the Romans... lobatan!

If you check you will see that I said if she present an official letter from her workplace there is no problem and yes single ladies have no business in hotels we don't allow our ladies to goto hotels hausa man will rather she quit the job if it involves a lot travelling and lodging in hotels.
It is just the way things are in the north

It's not only Hausa people who live and work in Kano. And if they're really serious about this issue then they would stop the hotel business totally. Because no prostitutee will use her own money to pay for a hotel room. Its usually their male customer who does this. In other words should we also ban the men?

OK get it clear. In Islam, men and women that are not married to themselves are not allowed to mix when it can be avoided. These hotels are being lodged by men and women thereby allowing such and is not as if it is unavoidable. But in the south, a man and a woman not married to themselves may even decide to lodge in the same hotel room in the name of saving cost, that is your choice. Prevention is always better than cure.

Why don't you create separate quarters for the sexes.

intolerant? the question is what is it not tolerating? social vices? I'll go for it please..

Exclusionary - Well I think this principle is the exact sedative to calm the already highly neurotic and toxic society and treat our sick cycle psychology in desperate need of psychiatry. . . Our psychiatry? ; Following the rulings of the Mightiest Monarch to the letter. Emphasizing 'to the letter', our North is still found wanting.

Even with all the raids happening in America, dem no born their religious and civil rulers well make dem implement such a law. It leads to blanket discrimination. Just imagine if America started refusing Muslims entrance into their country because of terrorists? What of all the Muslims who are not terrorists.

Yes they're free to adjust it. But their freedom ends where mine starts. Its a democracy. I am a woman who travels around Nigeria alone. Do you see the conflict?

Why do you say the law is senseless? Because you don't like it? Do you even comply with any law?. If u choose to live a lawless live, why condemn one who chooses to live a lawful one? These laws cannot completely eradicate promiscuity but it controls it.
