Ebonyi state university also made the students parents/guardians sign an undertaking similar to this in 2013. It was suppose to be a peaceful protest but, turned out to be a nightmare. Unilag no even stay long sef before dem resume. We stayed for over 6months and twas not funny. Each student also played 10k for damages.

I was lucky to attend Unilag during the four most peaceful period in the history of the school 2006-2010. Coincindentally there was no SUG during this period. Save for 3 months ASUU strike each in 2007 and 2009, there was no disruption in academic activities occassioned by student's restiveness. There was no SUG then and actually students were not bothered because there was no need for it. The school management did its best to make students comfortable and whenever they fell short, students just bear with them. There were periods during exam when therep is no light at night in the hostels and students who want to prepare for exams would take their books under the street lights to read. Whatever problem the school has is not a permanent problem. You have to dialogue with the management and give them time to look into it. They should proscribe SUG if that would bring back lasting peace in the school.

This isn't new to Unilag, this was the same thing I signed in year 2005 or there about when something similar occurred, school was locked for 3months, we resumed with this oath signing and we even paid damages then... nothing happened SUG was suspended till I graduated 2008/2009, armed police men and private opc guys guarded the school then, hostels were locked 12midnite, a lot of intimidation then, nothing happened, they are gonna get away with this too....soo sad, but if u an akokite and u wish to graduate beta dnt join any illegal protect after signing this oath.

In essence, you do not see the need for union I guess. I have learnt to look at our youths and the way we justify things that are not right. I will suggest better training for our activists and not dissolving their associations.

I concur with the forms the students have to fill.. It will keep them on check and make them realise , they are given admission into Unilag to read, learn and graduate as responsible and knowledgeable candidates required on various fields of career out here in the world.
If not ? Na parties every weekends, and clubbing..
Hence graduating and becoming a huge liability to our over populated country.
But with these rules and undertaking bn signed.. There heads go screw tight well.
They had better embrace it.. Its a wonderful way to go and rebrand unilag all over again.. Other tertiary schools , pls take note
.
If not ? Na the same garbage in.. Garbage out.
And companies will certainly not employ graduates that cant even defend anything, how much more assist and make a company grow... Honestly its really appalling .
Nigerian students sit up , study and learn the course u are admitted for.

No time to play or party or carry placards... Just focus and come out with honours that companies worldwide will beg to have u guyz on board..
To be successful is not easy.. Be serious and focused.
sad angry

The university management is unserious.

They should prioritise creation of a conducive learning environment and infrastructure for the students.

Behavioural contracts should never be instruments binding learners and managers of the learning experience.

The last time I took that kind of undertaken/oat was when I was in secondary school when Igbobi college my school, Bishop Howells, CMS grammer school, Saint Luke, Ajayi Crowder, Morocco comprehensive and Angus memorial school were shutdown by Lagos States when they were fighting, that was year 2001.
Unilag is turning to advanced secondary school.

WHY I WILL NOT SIGN FRIVOLOUS FORMS AND TAKE UNHOLY OATHS....PART 1

Today, despondency creeps stealthily with alarming rapidity into our political ecosystems as a result of continuous leadership violations of human rights with perpetual impunity and unlicensed immunity....

While I do not sympathise with "kangaroo protests and protesters" I will never watch rights to be violated by unconstitutional administrative rule makings. It is my humble submission that the administrative policies and conditions set out by the management for the so-called readmission of students is unconstitutional and is in no way corollary to the power of administrative rule making conferred on the management by virtue of the Enabling Act (Unilag Act) which established the institution in 1962...

We have a right to freedom of association by virtue of section 40. With due respect, the management erred in law when it said that students must only join union it recognises. We have a right to associate and dissociate.

In like manner, we also have a right to free conscience which includes personal determinism and free will... I may choose to take oath or not...I may not take one if it's against my personal or religious belief systems. This is premised on the strength of section 38..

I was never expelled so why should I be readmitted... With due respect, management eroded logicality when it calls the process readmission or reabsorption process. School was shut down , students were not expelled... They are two different things.

You may take away my chapter 2 rights by virtue of section 6(6)b.. But I tell you, that authority has never be created that will dare violate my chapter 4 rights by virtue of section 46.... Simply put, if the managers of Unilag choose not to give me light, water , accommodation, etc I may not protest because the court may not listen to me on ground of non-justiciability ...but no authority can violate chap. 4 rights with impunity...

The Oath Act, LFN, clearly outlaws unnecessary oath taking and repetition of oaths...

I can take Quaker's White Oats for as much as I can , but I can't take legal oaths anyhow.

Leave that one alone, he thinks he has written something, he doesn't know that he is a fool.... They should disband SUG.... who then will take up students rights? The fact that there was no issue like that in his time is his good fortune, as far as students are concerned they ought to stand up to any repressive administration.
