My brother. There is nothing to address. It is his opinion and if we go around addressing every single individual's opinion, we won't do anything with our lives.

Sports betting is for recreation. It's for entertainment. We have said that over and over again.

Mr A goes to the cinema to watch a movie for N1,000

Mr B goes to a beer parlour to drink beer for N1,000

Mr C goes to a NairaBET shop to bet with N1,000

Nobody comes back home with money. Infact, the sports betting guy can even come back with money.

Where is the fraud?

To most people that don't know how this works, let me explain.

100 people go to a betting shop and bet with N1,000 each. That is 100k.

98 of them lose their bets. One wins 50k. The other wins 45k. Out of the 5k remaining, the company pays a percentage to government as good causes and also company tax.

They pay salaries and they pay agents. They get to keep a cut as well.

It's crystal clear.

I wanted you to speak out. All good and clear from the CEO himself.

We all know it's not illegal. We all know it's not fraudulent so there is nothing to debate about that. It is a noble industry. Very few industries contribute to a society as much as this industry.

For example, all forums in Nigeria vs all sports betting websites. Ask Ambode to pick one. We know what he will pick.

We know it's not illegal. We know it's not fraudulent a. That is Seun's opinion and we really need to respect people's opinions.

I joined Nairaland in 2006. That is years before I launched Nairabet. I will still be a member even after the impending ban.

Seun:
Dear Nairalanders,

We are thinking of completely banning the promotion of forex trading and sports betting on Nairaland.

Forex day-trading and sports betting are fundamentally fraudulent because they're promoted as a quick way of making money whereas due to mathematical facts, the only people who make money are the middlemen and marketers. The "investors" almost always lose their money.

In our experience, it's not enough to warn Nairaland members about the dangers of forex day-trading and sports betting. The promise of quick profit is just too strong for thousands of vulnerable Nairaland members to resist. The only way to protect them is complete censorship.

We believe that the complete ban of such content will make Nairaland a better platform for discussing legitimate entrepreneurship and finance.

What do you think? Please click 'like' if you like the idea; thanks.

Dear Seun,

All protocols duly observed.

You must know that threads are created for owner's sake, likewise visiting them. Saying that these threads are not helpful but rather affective, thus the reason for banning them, gives room to a lot of questioning.

Every thread/section I visit on Nairaland is for the sole purpose of learning and knowing what is happening in the society through Nairaland (I love the JV {Chat room proper} section). It does not mean I'll have to visit all threads. But it definitely means that the subjects are attracting and the piece therein is worth glancing through. The same should be said for all Nairalanders.

Whoever is visiting a thread does so at his/her discretion and is liable for any negative thing he/she encounters therein. A perfect example is that of the Sexuality section. If a "Church goer (Holier than thou)" strolls down to the Romance/Sexuality section all in the name of wanting to know more, will s/he expect to see Jesus Christ or "church" related stuffs there when the section name says it all? Or the Muslim section that requires you accept you're a Muslim before you can "view" what is happening there. You don't expect me to continue with the journey when I know it has nothing to do with my faith - Even when Madcow1's signature, "The Islamic Section of Nairaland is a
Potential Security Hazard.. They may be planning a Jihad
there and we wouldn't know", says it all.

Uncle Seun, leave threads for those who enjoy it. Believe me, most peeps only know those threads on Nairaland and shutting them simply means reduction in traffic (or whatever it can be called). I'd suggest you create a separate thread for betting, since it's garnering enough visits and views so that the sports section will be devoid of betting complaints.

Thanks.

Yours truly,
Karleone

My humble opinion

PS: Just when I was about seeing Time Spent: 1 Month in my profile, God knows who wiped my time spent. Please Sir, kindly look into this. I so much desire to see that 1month just to tell myself "Oboi, you don try for Nairaland o".

Forex - meaning Foreign Exchange is a legitimate business or trade that seek to benefit from the fluctuations (volatility) in the exchange rates of national currencies as a result of international trade. Although previously the exclusive preserve of Banks and bureau-de-change, the internet has made it possible for individuals like me to benefit from the trillions of dollars involve daily. Banning it will not only be illegal, it will be anti-technology and a denial of my right to engage in a legitimate pursuit through naira land.

Of course, it's a high risk but highly profitable venture, but so is oil exploration and production!. The problem is not its risky nature, but the lack of proper training, risk management Know-how, discipline, patience and hard work needed to succeed in it - like any other worthwhile venture. It's not a trade for the greedy and certainly not a short-cut to wealth.

I trade Forex for a living and have friends who do, among whom are doctors, Safety officers, and others.

PLEASE DO NOT BAN FOREX TRADE ON NAIRALAND!

[b]Billionaire Gambler: Billy Walters

Billy Walters is an excellent all-around professional gambler.  He started gambling at 5 years old and never stopped.  He is known as the greatest and richest sports bettor in the world.  Claiming a lifelong 57% winning percentage on his sports bets.  In 1986, Billy Walters won $3.8 million at the roulette exploiting the flaw of an old wheel at the Golden Nugget casino in Atlantic City.  Winning $3.5 million on 2010 Superbowl and $400 000 on a single golf hole.

But things wasn't always that perfect for Billy Walters.  Before making the big jump in Las Vegas to become a full-time pro gambler.  At 35 years old, Billy Walters was the typical pathological gambler/loser.  He was broke, owing money to several bookmakers, couldn't command any credit, into his third marriage, a ill son...  Despite being a very successful used-car dealer, making between $400 000 to $500 000 a year, he was penniless.  Gambling away all his profits.

No matter what regular job he got in the past, in his mind, he always been a professional gambler - pool, gin rummy, poker, blackjack, roulette, golf, horses, whatever...  But it all changed when in 1982, he moved to Vegas and focused all his efforts into being a professional gambler.  After being broke fifteen times, as he said, he started to focus, went on a 30-year winning streak as a sports bettor, and became a success story.

Thankx to his sports betting expertise, the once dirt poor boy from Kentucky now worth hundreds of millions of dollars.  He owns 7 homes around the world (one of his house worth $29 millions), 8 car dealerships, owns and operates 9 golf courses, shopping centers, commercial properties, a $20 million private jet, and a team of sports consultants and programmers who work for him in his gigantic office located in his Clark County area's grand estate.  And on a normal day, he can gamble an easy $2 million which is enough to move the line and change the odds.

In a good year, he can rake $15 millions from gambling, which account for only 20% of his revenues.  So if $15 millions represents 20% of his yearly revenue.  We can conclude that he rake $75 millions a year, most of it via real estate.  Not bad for a degenarate gambler!

That's the American Dream!

The Man Who Broke Atlantic City

Don Johnson won nearly $6 million playing blackjack in one night, single-handedly decimating the monthly revenue of Atlantic City’s Tropicana casino. Not long before that, he’d taken the Borgata for $5 million and Caesars for $4 million.

People have different gifts. Not everyone will succeed in music, blogging, law, medicine, football, gambling etc. That does not mean others will not succeed in it.

If someone's gift is in gambling, forcing him to do something else means he is wasting his talent.

Just like forcing a left handed and footed child to use his right. Allow people to grow and not force them to make your decision. Your life is not theirs.

That is like stopping the betting jackpot winner who won N56 million from betting, the night before he made that bet.

Your star is not another person's own.

I respect seun so much, but his conclusion on banning bet threads doesn't make any sense at all, I suggested previously in one nonsense thread where all these started that sport bets threads should be moved to a sport betting section but he had to delete some threads,
I mainly visit nairaland for this threads and I know many people that do too, in fact not only Nigerians removing them means less traffic for u seun, nairaland is boring without it.
If sport bet is a get rich quick scheme all punters will have an hummer right now,
If u had banned topics like make 40million from blood money today, join my yahoo yahoo click, how I slept with my boss and I'm now a manager, and u gave those reasons it'd hav been more credible.
If u aren't doing anything that's against the 10 commandments you are in the right path.
Besides people kill others for promotion in those so called legit businesses you can think of, people tell lies, they fornicate or commit adultery for these things so what are u saying. It's either seun, u put back those banned thread in a new section or Nairaland is bye bye cos it's ur own rich quick scheme.
Nigerian Govt no ban am because they know the truth, na u dey ban am, it's not right at all
Alabi I sight u jorr.

First it was a ban on promoting biafra, now its a ban on sports betting. Next would be a ban on calling fulani herdsmen terrorist or a ban on criticizing apc. Oga seun boys have been punting since before the came to NL; NL never contributed to its popularity.

I'm surprised at the level of censorship on Nairaland.
Both forex and Nairaland are legal businesses in Nigeria.
So if you were to be made President of USA for a day, you'll ban all the casinos in Las Vegas because people lose money there?
Wow ..

Well,here is my advice...

Instead of banning them, create separate section for them, and make it accessible to only those who are registered on Nairaland and above the age of18/21 depending on what u consider legal age to be matured enough to participate, and put a clear disclaimer that you do not advice pple participating in said activities.

But trying to limit or control how pple spend their time and money negates everything freedom of speech and expression stands for, and Nairaland should not be known for that.

America spent millions of dollars fighting drugs like weed, yet now some States now are legalizing same weed...if you decide to censor betting and forex, you'll only succeed in driving pple to look for it elsewhere... #ThinkAboutIt

There is more to this. I believe Mr. Seun will not just wake up and make this decision. There must have been some external forces and my wild guess is Alabi

Seun,

I have known you since 2006 here on nairaland and how you have been making your decisions. At some points we accused you of being autocratic, stup!d and fooli.sh but you periodic decisions though forced some active members out of Nairaland, this site still wax stronger and stronger and many people still come back.... . Even where you don't wanna come back, but where u queried Google and Google refer you to nairaland and on nairaland , you were able to get the succinct information you are looking for based on experiences of different contributors. .........

Therefore, with what you have achieved for Nairaland based on your decisions, only daf.t person(s) will query your level of intelligence especially "forum business intelligence"

I want to remind you that Nairaland has been developed by you to become an Information centre and I would say as a result of my daily interaction with this forum, I have learnt a great deal and always current in happenings around me.

I was new to sport betting and I never attached any importance to it on nairaland despite I have some dudes I was following partaking , I never understand what they were doing. .... One day, My friend introduced me to sport betting after He won #97,000 and #137,000 ..... seunfly can corroborate this.

I went to Google to query sport betting and Google referred me to threads on nairaland regarding sport betting .... The threads were from season 1-7 or so and each thread is close to or more than 100pages .....

I took my time and read each pages, learn from professionals by reading their advice and tips .....

When I started my own , Despite my level of education, I made some loses because I was in a hurry to win big with small stake .... in other word, I was greedy ......

I came back to nairaland only to discover that greedy folks were those that lose more in businesses.

Now, with information I gathered on nairaland and how I trained myself (I am an accountant and financial mgt is my core) to be more prudent ..... I turned sport betting into Businesses instead of gambling.

I have my capital, daily staking plan and daily constant profit on my game strategy.

I know the risk on my capital and any endeavour that involve money or finances must involve RISK ... the most risky event in life is business because many foreseen and unforseen circumstances influence its flow which may be more profitable than you imagined/planned or you loses than you plan.

Seun,

Nairaland is an Information centre because different people with different ideas come up here to share experiences which can turn a novice into an expert in matter of days ..... some of us prefer virtual/online business than physical business(exchanging of goods for cash) .........

some folks come to nairaland due to sport betting / Forex but got interested in other events like politics, career and family and GBAM, they are glued to nairaland.

I would advice you heavily regulate sport betting/forex/binary or create a section for online/virtual business inside Business section just like you did for Islam inside religion and place moderators to provide modalities and sanity.

Banning sport betting /FX will surely have traffic consequences though I know if such be the case, you will reverse your decision.....

Instead of banning this lucrative business due to some scammers and greedy unintelligent novice, I would recommend you create new section for online Businesses and let it be heavily regulated same way you did for politics section those days when tribalism was at its peak.

[b]Not every Business is meant for everybody, I won't say because Seun is successful in forum businesses I will also go forum or because Linda ikeji made fortune in blogging I would go blogging and become Linda overnight ....... Every Business requires training and personal intelligence, if you keep losing, you have to stop and review your lose, whether to quit or re-strategize .....Sport betting/FX is not meant for unintelligent folks but because the staking/capital for sport betting is as little as #50, you see so many unintelligent people delving into the businesses and making huge loss ........ people who can't even analyse their own palm ...... [\b]

Kudos to your handwork and decisions Seun Osewa and Long life and prosperity to Nairaland (Best information Centre and forum in Nigeria) !!!!!
