This is actually the right time to deregulate the downstream oil sector. What's the essence of paying exuberant subsidy to the major oil marketers when the price of oil has crashed in the market? Though I still think the 145 naira per litre is kind of too much{ maybe 120/115 naira per litre is ok and somehow understandable}, but the subsidy removal timing is spot on and every reasonable Nigerian should support it.
you don't know what you're analysing, maybe your parents are still feeding you that's why you're saying this trash.

Oga you are STILL not getting it. This is an official CRIME being commited against nigerians.

Now repeat after me:

"You CANNOT remove fuel subsidy and still fix pump price".

Say it a thousand times and keep saying it until it sticks to your mind.

Buhari just increased pump price to N145.

Subsidy is STILL on.

The government never used the term deregulate. The fact is they have not deregulated. You cannot peg prices to a ceiling and say the market is deregulated. What if my costs exceed 145 naira. What if I decide I want to cater for cars that require premium high octane fuel which costs more. You then tell me I cannot sell more than 145 naira. Lastly, you do not increase prices when the product is still unavailable!!! You just put more money in the pockets of the black marketers.

Exactly what i was thinking. How can there be deregulation and the govt is still fixing prices? i don't just understand. Please anyone who understands should clarify.

Bro, your analogy is very simple. I have observed that the APC led federal government has a lot of political and media strategists that are very good in the arts of propaganda. Their public manipulation techniques is too subtle for the gullible Nigerians to recognize. Your narrative can be given a philosophical bearing...........
According to Noam Chomsky, there are 10 strategies the elites use to manipulate the masses. The second of those strategies is ... . Create problems, then offer
solutions

This method is also called “problem
-reaction- solution.”
It creates a problem, a “situation”
referred to cause some reaction in
the audience, so this is the
principal of the steps that you want
to accept.
Or create an economic crisis to
accept as a necessary evil retreat
of social rights and the dismantling
of public services.
When social problems are
concocted to provoke a specific
need for orientation in the
population, that makes possible a
solution in the ideological direction
desired from the beginning. A
serious crime is committed
especially when the living
conditions of people deteriorate.
Whoever
sees the elites' information
advantage over their diverted
populations, particularly when the
mass media acts as a "fourth
branch" under resource scarcity
and factors of capital-connection and under a unanimous
mentality does not need much
imagination to recognize how
easily crises, catastrophes and
other problems in many areas can
be intensified and exploited.
This is what is currently happening....
Hegel captured it so well using thesis-antithesis-synthesis in his dialectics.

The initiated minds already see APC propaganda as watery and childish save for the gullible ones.

Why do you think this is the right time and not before now.

In 2012 we were given the breakdown of how the price was about N140.. What is the breakdown down that gave us N145.. Especially since crude oil is now priced low.

With this, don't you think Nigerians will be paying more than other countries comparatively?

One of the media big men here in Lagos just told us that he was wrong to have opposed the deregulation in 2012. Do you think we all were wrong or we should insist, for political sentiments, that 2012 was not a good time to deregulate, giving that the government have been advocating deregulation even when obj was president?

Besides, the popular cliche; corruption, have been one major reason to deregulate even before 2012, in 2012 and now too.

Do you think we allowed corruption in that sector to remain by our insistence in 2012?.. I think we did because the subsidy corruption remained even with this government.

You and the OP are just too ignorant. 140 naira from what amount exactly? For 65 naira. It was even 141 not 140.
Exchange rate was 162 to a dollar then, and oil was sold at an average of 113 usd per barell. Today FX is scarce due to the fact oil is sold below 40usd. Todays exchange rate is 199 to a dollar. Get facts straight before attacking.

My brother our problem is sentiment and people just like to politicize everything. This subsidy of a thing ought to have been removed since 2012, but it was very unfortunate that some people played politics with it even when they know the decision to remove it was a step in the right direction. I don't know, corruption might be one of those factors that people thought it was wrong to remove the subsidy in 2012, but it shouldn't have mattered as long as the thing was removed. If the people that criticised subsidy removal then were any wiser, they would have known that removing the subsidy was another way of tackling corruption in the oil sector

I agree with everything you said up there. It is just unfortunate that Nigerians especially our elites will choose to politicize everything and bring sentiments into it.
and they get n enjoy the benefit alone.

For example i spend 20 liters daily on my car to shuttle between Mainland and Lekki. I suffer at least 2 hours of Traffic inside heat so the A/C must be on. If i buy Fuel now for N145 per litre, that means i spend N87,000 a month on Fuel in my car. (Where i wan see am?)

When i get home i must buy at least 10 litres every day for the home Generator. That's N43,500 in a month Making a total of N130,500 a month on Fuel. Let me not add the 20liters per day i buy to run my office generator o!

You are the architect of your own problem! Your problem could have easily been solved if you invest in alternative power supply at home and work. Also since you buy the fuel for your office, it seems you own the company or are a top boss, you can easily dictate your working hours or learn about virtual communication if being physically present is not needed but in Nigeria we only advance ourselves in irrelevant issues such as celebrity gossip, fashion and so on, keep waiting for the Government to make your life better instead of using your brain!

Nigerians should realize this is not subsidy removal, but increment of petrol price. Subsidy removal would mean any importer can bring in petrol into the country and sell at ''any price''. You don't remove subsidy and still fix the price of petrol.

This is a huge scam!. This's actually the biggest government scam since 1960!!.

Petrol price has crashed worldwide and if allowed to sell at free market price, we may actually but petrol at N50 per litter or less.

How can you be so sure Buhari is a scam?

UAE removed subsidy last year and since then price of petrol, kerosene, diesel, all keep crashing daily to the advantage of consumers.

Below is UAE's ministry of energy table of fuel price since subsidy removal.

Now you know why David Cameron described Nigeria as ''fantastically corrupt''.

By the way, $1 UAE = N55. If you do the maths you see the current petrol price there is about N75, after removing subsidy.

Stop making excuses for GEJ's failure.

Yes, it could have been best done during excess crude earnings but since the govt of then had proved to be hopelessly corrupt, and lacking trust of the citizens, Nigeriana were right to resist it.

BTW, the palliatives promised for the partial removal they eventually did, where are they?

In 2013...when we were enjoying subsidy....oil was above $113 per barrel.

Now it is below $50 per barrel.

In other words....we do not have the cash to sustain the subsidy.

So...where does Mr Lawyer expect us to get the money? (Take a IMF loan perhaps).

GEJ did many things wrong. Proposing to remove subsidy completely was not one of them.

I don't like Nigerians. One minute they would be complaining that Buhari is running socialist government....the next minute they would be asking for the same old socialist government...when they see capitalism.

Until someone can tell me clearly where we are going to get money to pay for subsidy....especially as we are still owing subsidy claims...and especially as oil prices are down.....I think that we have to just face reality.

Yes people will suffer. But we would suffer far more if we keep on spending money that we do not have subsidsing fuel, most of which we import.

(Anyone calling me names misses the point. ).

My brother there is more than enough money in this country to pay for subsidy till the next ten years, senators are changing cars like cellphone, buhari is cruising on more than two private jet, state are getting bail-out fund daily and still the salary haven't be paid, N50 is being debited from every transaction through the banks, millions have be recover from acclaim corruption persecution, grant are being giving to Nigeria daily. The thing changing in this country is buhari children riding on first class in virgin airway, while majority are even try to fly economy in turkey airline

Make Fuel scarce for 8months.

Make Nigerians very Frustrated.

Make them buy it at exorbitant prices from 150-250 Naira per litre.

Make it very difficult to even get the fuel even at that price.

Make them beg for black market fuel at N300 per Litre.

Continue to blame Gej and Pdp for the fuel Scarcity.

Make FX scarce. Make people queue for hours and ignore their cries and pains.

Tap into a typical Nigerian's excessive calmness, patience and dislike to queue and suffer.

Promise them Fuel Scarcity would end May 7th.

Re-Introduce the Fuel Scarcity on May 9th.

Make people start begging Buhari/APC to ‪#‎endfuelqueues‬.

Send Buhari to the U.K on May 10th to disgrace us and tell the whole world "Yes Nigeria is Fantastically Corrupt" to deflect attention on what is going back home.

Increase Fuel price from N97 to N145 on May 11th without considering the masses or providing any palliative to cushion the effects of the massive inflation that would result from it to further impoverish Nigerians.

Lie to Nigerians that NLC and all the Governors and Senators are in support. ( Meanwhile its not true)

Change the narrative that ‪#‎OccupyNigeria‬ 1 wasn't about reversal of Fuel subsidy under GEJ but because they didn't trust GEJ to do it well because he was corrupt.

Promote a lot of Social media activists and APC fans living outside Nigeria to tell the world why the new fuel subsidy removal is the best thing to happen to Nigeria since Fried Rice and Chicken because they trust Buhari.

You are speaking long grammer oga.

If the govt. cannot pay subsidy what gives them the right to tell folks how much to sell their stuff?

Will they also tell folks how much to spend in procuring , importing, distribiting and dispensing the product?

Please wake up. You simplly don't know what they are calling deregulation.

Remeber this is change era. So the meanung of deregulation may have changed too. Otherwise how do you claim that you have deregulated the downstream sector, and yet you are regulating the pump price in the same sector? Does that make any sense to you?

Believe this lieing govt. at your own peril.

I have not added cost of food, Fashola's (aka Minister of Darkness) new high increment in Nepa bills, taxes, food, inflation on every damn thing and miscellaneous expenses.

Why then would Nigerians not be Fantastically Corrupt to survive when Buhari's Government only understands Increment, taxes, tolls, pain and suffering and the minimum wage is N18,000 per month while they rejected just 2 weeks ago to increase workers wages. APC lied that if Buhari wins the election, Fuel would be N40 per litre. Little did we know they meant N145 per litre. Every single thing Buhari met in May 2015 has increased 100% just under one year.

We could live with his bland and vapid economic policies but why compound it with an 80% increase from N86 to N145? This is beyond heartless and cruel. Nobody deserves this kind of wickedness. Even convicted Murders don't deserve this kind of suffering talk less of hard working Nigerians.

Since May 29 2015 almost everyone i know has complained that Business has been bad and their wallets are getting slimmer. No economic improvement or sign of better things to come. Rather its one propaganda or the other about how Minister A chop money or Governor F Stole $100 billion meanwhile the hard working Nigerians who have nothing to do with it are getting hungrier everyday and starving because there is no economic blue print but out of the blues ..BOOM!!! N145 per liter. Pay it or jump into the Lagoon.

To you guys abroad supporting the wicked policies of Buhari on twitter or Facebook, don't think you are exempt from it. The families/relatives you left behind in Nigeria are going to suffer it too and you would be getting daily calls from Nigeria for you to send Western Union because "Hunger they catch them". The money you intended to use to do something good or feed your family would finally end up in a petrol station in Lagos till you finally get fed up.

NLC over to you. We would join you whenever your ready to shut Nigeria down with #OccupyNigeria 2 to make Buhari reboot his brain and reverse his archaic and medieval 1984 economic policies.

Thats why he is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.. Thanks for the Compliment.

Really!!

So a Government that is still less than a year in office would deliberately sabotage themselves just so they can remove a scheme (subsidy) that we all as Nigerians unanimously agree is corruption riddled, a drain on our economy and unsustainable.. Just to remove the subsidy.. OK! Continu..

technically speaking, I dont remember Jonathan or the PDP building a single refinery in the last 16 years.

Seriously!! President Muhammadu Buhari made Forex scarce.. grin grin grin Just to remove Subsidy.. grin grin grin

Na wah o!!

This Buhari that has no Certificate sure knows how to scheme and plot really well.. grin

Wait!! So are you saying Nigeria isnt Corrupt? or what exactly?

But lets Continu...

When people say provide Palliatives, I wonder what exactly they mean..

The same Palliatives allegedly provided by President Jonathan through the SURE.P Scheme? O!! By the way, where are the SURE.P Buses ad Palliatives? Cos I never saw them..

But its alright, lets Continu!

But it was actually not just about reversing the price, it was about properly investigating the fraud, fishing out the fraudsters, imprisoning the fraudsters, recovering as much loot as can be recovered, close up the loopholes in the system and then provide "palliatives" to cushion the initial shocking of jumping fuel price from 65 naira to 145 Naira..

But thats by the way.. Kontinu..

Is subsidy removal a bad thing or am I missing your point?

But Kontinu.

Wee You Keep Kwayeeet!! angry

Do you think Nigerians need reminding that they rely on Generator for Power? angry

But Continu.

If you live on the Mainland and work on the Island and spend 20 liters everyday to get to and fro Work.. DOES common sense not tell you to move closer to your place of work?

If your car uses 20 liters everyday to get you to and from work, you need to either change your engines or buy a more fuel efficient vehicle.

If you spend 87,000 Naira every Month on Fuel for your car 1,044,000.00 (One Million and Forty-four Thousand naira) per year.. The real question should be how did you get that job because you sound too stupid to even have passed Common Entrance let alone pass a job interview..

BUT please dont stop, CONTINU..

This your maths really get K-leg o.. But so also does all you have written.

10 liters per day = 1450 Naira per day.

1450 * 30days = 43,500/month

43,500 * 12 = 522,000/annum.

Yeah.. Okay?! So..................................

Okay.. Soooo?

O really!

Fuel price increased because they removed Subsidy.

NEPA bill increased because it was not profitable for Power to be supplied at the cost we were getting it initially.

Dollar rate increased because the price of oil fell to an all time low and Nigerias number one source of Forex was in Jeopardy.

Whatelese?

Yeah!! The freebies are over hommie.

No more subsidy on anything..

Since May 2016, the world has been struggling under the collapse of oil Prices. Russia,, Saudi, e.t.c all are struggling. Countries with Agriculture and other solid minerals as their export goods are doing fine.

Things are getting worse not because this government has destroyed anything, but because things have always been bad for sooooo longand this government is not interested in covering shiit up any more..

But CONTINU..

I am in Nigeria, I have been buying fuel for over 86 Naira for a very very very long time (even when there was no scarcity).

I have never had 24hours light and have bought over 6 Generators in my young adult life.

I have always had to drive on bad roads and spend a lot servicing my vehicles.

Dollar has been dropping for a long time even when Oil sales prices were at 120/barrel.

Nigerian Universities and even lower schools have been decaying for soooooooooooooooooooooo long that now its Normal.

Infrastructures have been going south for a very long long time.

The last refinery built in Nigeria is over 30 years old.

I have lived in a one track economy all my life, thats why as a kid growing up, all I wanted to be was a Petroleum Engineer.

We have always imported everything we used and ate.. From Chicken to Tomatoes to Cement to name it.

We have never been a producing or exporting nation. Thats why ships coming into our Sea ports are fuller than when they leave.

Corruption is nothing new to Nigerians. Thats why the pseudo-name for internet scam is 'The Nigerian Email Scam". The Nigerian Police whose 'Code of Conduct" rules makes it ILLEGAL to recieve any GIFT (I did not say bribe) from any individual (except its a very close relative), openly 'DEMAND" bribes from Nigerians in public.

The only thing that seems to be working in Nigeria is the telecoms sector and even that one sef na problem.

Abegi make I hear word.

And If indeed by some insane stroke of luck you happen to be right that President Buhari did all you alleged in your Post just to remove this cankerworm called subsidy from our system, then he is a very Intelligently cunning man and has my vote for a second term.

if what the OP wrote are not true as refuted by you, then it mins the PMB is a dunce.. that mins he just woke up one day and took d decision.. he didn't plan it..
what d op wrote is a military tactics ...same was used by ObJ ...no difference..
they choose 145 because after protest they will revert to 120 or so...
my own take is it should not have been. more than 100naira...then next year move it to 120

The truth is that Nigerian economy has been overstretched and this fuel deregulation is one of the best ways to save us fom total collapse. There is scarcity of foreign exchange to fund fuel importation.

(Anyone calling me names misses the point. ).
With crude pricing for less than 50$/barrel, there should not be any need for subsidy. Even without subsidy, pms should not be selling above 100 Naira.

Wow.. I never knew what I posted was an attack. Besides, the issue of deregulation have been on before 2012 and oil was $37 in 2008. I'm looking at the rationality vs politics. If it's rational and have been rational. Shouldn't we say politics made us act irrational?

This is actually the right time to deregulate the downstream oil sector. What's the essence of paying exuberant subsidy to the major oil marketers when the price of oil has crashed in the market? Though I still think the 145 naira per litre is kind of too much{ maybe 120/115 naira per litre is ok and somehow understandable}, but the subsidy removal timing is spot on and every reasonable Nigerian should support it.

I am just amazed at ur doggedness in analysing economics in Nigeria blindly. This increament spells more doom to an average Nigerian in this already very hard times. No light, No forex, the price of everything has gone up and now PMS at 145naira! Am sure u just don't know anything about what is going on in d country, if u can be so gullible to kick against it in 2012 and embrace it now, then, ur brain needs to be checked! Mtcheew, gullible people everywhere mehn! undecided

ery smart. I now understand the format.

Forget to remind Nigerians that since we do not have 24 hours light, we rely on Generators to run businesses and homes.
