It was a funny experience, especially the part where you address every1 that came your way as 'SIR'... till after a while, you get to realize they are by far your subordinates grin then the nervousness... But I felt at home cos coincidentally, my HoS once had a crush on my cousinwink

1, My first day at my first job (a pre-NYSC job in an investment management firm in VI.

Very strange to me. That was my first exposure to corporate Lagos as a first graduate. The environment looked too "artificial" with everyone speaking fonee. Being someone that was raised in ilu oke (countryside), I was nervous on how to fit into the environment. I was shown around by an HR lady. My system was set up. I was given some materials to read. One or two persons in the department came to talk to me about the department. During lunchtime, i was shown the lunch room. Free lunch. Sumptuous varieties. As if that not enough, dessert was served after lunch. Then in the evening, around 5pm, one lady was going around distributing chocolates and candies. For my mind, I dey think "won gbadun n'iyayin fa (dem dey enjoy here o)". Lol. Of course, I was also thinking of month end to collect my first salary.

2, My first day at my second job (first permanent job - an indigenous downstream oil company)

I wasn't so apprehensive here. I was shown around as usual. I saw people speaking Yoruba in office. That gave me some confidence that this wasn't as bam as my first job. Lol. I also saw that their dressing wasn't as strict as the investment firm. But hey, no free lunch here unlike the first! My system was set up and I was given a desk, a big desk. Needless to say I spent almost all day browsing Nairaland. I asked the lady colleague that sat in front of me a couple of questions. She was nice.

3, My first day at my 3rd job (an indigenous usptream oil company with foreign flavour)

I joined here as an experienced hire in their expansion phase. No anxiety. Of course, the pay being twice my pay at my last employment, I was looking forward to the pay day right from Day 1. No free lunch here too. Saw a couple of oyinbo expatriates. First time working with non-Asian expatriates. I settled down very quickly here and made friends almost from Day 1.

I will never forget that day.. I applied for the post of a computer operator but ended up sweeping and dusting the whole office, swept the compound, swept the table, swept the roof.... Chai, that woman was wicked i swept everthing plus her laptop.

It was a horrifing experience.... Well, i resigned the next day. I took that as a cleaning training..

And to think that my salary was to be 7 thoushand Naira monthly but we did only 10 Naira worth of photocopy that whole day.

You no hear word? I said i resigned the next day. Shikina.

Yeah, it isn't but looking back, you just had to laugh, not because of those bad jobs that came our way but because of the progresses we have made in life.

It seem we both worked in same place, mine was also a meagre 7000 naira monthly.

When I remember, I smile.

Mine wasn't near a perfect beginning.
The few times (twice actually) I had course to work, they were both factory works, in lagos then. Those that has worked in a factory in Lagos would understand.

We were addressed by the Nigerian supervisor, after wish we were taking into the factory and were given a line supervisor to overseen us with a target of learning within maximum 48hours or gets dropped.

Mehn, as the sharp Edo boy (omo bendel, according to the Yoruba) I'm, I was able to catch up within 24hours and in me I thought I had gotten a job, little did I know the working conditions was inhuman.

Well, was able to scale through, worked for few months, within 3 months in one of the factories, I was made a supervisor because of my work strength and stamina, and ofcourse my no nonsense attitudes.

Ended up slapping an Indian boss in one of the factories and fvcked as many girls I could in the other.

It was a nice experience I must admit but not worth it anymore.

Right now, can't imagine myself working under someone anymore, have gotten to a stage where serving myself is the only option.

Lol. Funny day.

After coming to meet the MD (Chief Architect) the previous week, I came that morning and everywhere looked strange.

I saw the beautiful receptionist cheesy, she and I exchanged pleasantries. I asked her few things like number of Architects and Engineers in the firm. And also the number of off field staff.

When I finally was assigned a table, few hours later, I was asked to give the spec of computer I would need for my design. I did that. And also, I was asked to contact someone to deliver to the computer. All these happened in on the first day. Before the ended, I had a crazy HP ENVY with cute graphics card.

Guys and ladies there were actually observing me, because I was the youngest among Architects and Engineers.(though I have few IT guys working under me now who are younger than me) And my computer was the coolest.

Its been fun since then actually, just that the pressure that comes with drawing with finest computer in the office. Everyone 3d proposal is brought to my desk

This is how my table looks on a very busy day! grin grin

Here's mine...

I've had several first days at work, but this comes to mind first.

I was meant to work in a Clinic in a government tertiary medical center somewhere in the east.

I had reported as early as 7.30am, thinking work was going to start by 8am, being the dutiful and punctual chap I was brought up to be.

9.00am, I was still sitting in front of the door, waiting. Didn't see anybody.

At that point, I was beginning to think there probably wasn't work that day.

I then decided that if in another 30mins, I don't see anybody, na my bed go get me o.

Shortly after that, patients started trickling in. Then the attendants and later the nurses. They even thought I was a patient, and were asking me to go register.

It was after I had introduced myself (imagine!) they told me they actually don't resume early, even though the official time was 8am.

At the end of the day, work didn't start until after 10am. By 2pm, clinic don close. I was like...just0228362854 like that? Me wey don use to working back-breaking jobs from 8am to 4pm non-stop.

I spent about a year there, and as much as I tried to change the habits of the people, as I had to sometimes run the clinic alone, they refused to change o.

Na so I just leave them, when it was like my own was too much...bloody yoluba boy from the southwest!

I don't have a real job experience, however, my first day at coca cola for my internship was hell. the safety boot I got was too tight I could barely walk. I was smiling at people but then I was crying inside. the worst part was they kept asking me to get water samples from the line. I wanted to cry.

My first day at work was crazy. I work in a multinational company as a Technician. Nothing in the induction training and years of studying engineering in school could have prepare me for the shock of having to maintain machines as big as storey buildings. I was so scared to touch any of the controls ehn, I actually spoilt some stuffs. Engineers there though are good at what they do and have seen a lot amatuers like me so they were Understanding. Now, I don turn pro myself and I'm one of the best at it. Actually the fear we have of relating with people, acquiring skills on the job, stupid bosses and all those stuffs arent too real. One should just be calm, don't form oversabi, be respectful, be ready to learn and BE SMART ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND THE OFFICE POLITICS. Reading '48 Laws Of Power' really helped me though.

Awesome book!

One of the laws (LAW 1) that's very helpful in handling office politics is "Never Outshine The Master"

My first day at work was cool, I already knew a little about my supervisor coz he was the one that interviewed me. Apart from addressing everyone as Sir (including the security men and women grin grin ) I almost got lost in the building at times coz it's a big place. There was a time I almost entered the female toilet when someone was there.... grin grin grin

Everything is all cool now.

My First day at work was remarkable. I was taken to the classroom to teach for like 20 minutes before I was given the job. Though I failed some questions during the interview stage. I guess my use of phonetics impressed the principal.

The second Job I got was through 'connect'. A teaching job too, I didn't go for interview, just started working. I was the youngest staff and somehow the most valued. I don't know, but people are inclined to think I am very intelligent even without a concrete prove.

Then I got admission.
