bye you refused to learn and focus on your urbhobos and mind your business since you dont want to learn. How are you going to tell me about my tribe. I am from Irrua and my king have never have to go the Benin's for anything. The urbhobos have no king and all they have is a dukes

Fine, since you are adamant, I will teach you about your people.

Irrua is one of the 35 semi-autonomous kingdoms that make up Esanland. The people of Irrua are ruled over by a Duke (Enogie) who is historically subservient to the Oba of Benin in precolonial times when Benin was an empire. With the rise of colonialism and independence, kings got ceremonial roles and their true power was removed. The then Western House of Chiefs required every kingdom to elect a monarch in other to be represented. This prompted the rise of Enogies and Odionwerres as kings like you see them to be. However, what you dont know is that all of them are second class chiefs which are subservient to the first class Oba of Benin! They are also subject to his confirmation and approval. This is usually done before the coronation. After the coronation, they maintain their independence. This approval is only a ritualistic function and nothing else. In Irrua, Uromi, Ekpoma, Igueben, etc, it is the same!

Meanwhile you turned this intellectual encounter into a tribal feud by making unverifiable assertions about my people. Urhobos have "Ovies" which means First, Ruler, etc, depending on context. Our Ovies are mostly rotational and based on gerontocracy with a few hereditary monarchs here and there. Our kings have no binding ties with the Oba other than the fact that we know he is the Oba of "Aka" (Oba r'Aka)! In any case, no offence is taken. Better learn more about your people and accept my brief lesson lest I teach you more

There is Egbema Ijaw tribe in Delta and Bayelsa.
You Ibos can be so irritating ...jeez!
What an uncouth behavior you are exhibiting here. Smh.
You jumped in without knowing the genesis of what is being discussed.
Is there any Egbema ijaw in River state . No...emphatic NO.
We are talking about Rivers and you drag Delta and Bayelsa in. Igbo virus is really burrowing deep into your skin.
Try to determine the basis of argument before jumping cos you look so stu.pid now.

This is your beloved Egbema Ijaw...eat it and drink it.
e Egbema tribe of the Ijaw people lives to the west of the Benin River in northern Delta State, Nigeria. The town of Ofiniama is the seat of the Egbema.

The Egbema have a strong Ijaw cultural identity, despite their location on the western fringe of Ijawland. The clan traces its origins to several migrations from the Mein, Iduwini, and Ekeremor tribes over the past few hundred years.

Esans are NOT Binis and I see no reason why they should observe the death of the Oba! My point of departure is simple: the Enogies and Odions of Esanland are subservient to the Oba of Benin in classification and hegemonic influence and this cannot be denied as much as Urhobos cannot deny their Edoness!!!

I dont see the relationship between our current piece of discourse and your extratextual reference to Efik! I am not an Efik person.

Urhobos are not a major tribe and yes, they are Edoid. But I bet you dont even know the implication of being a member of the Edoid linguistic family. Maybe you think being Edoid translates to being Edos! grin

I do not need to be an Esan to know Esan even more than Esan scholars! It is all about an application of the mind.

Please read up more about your people. It is truly worrisome when all we know about our tribe is what we hear or what we have grown accustomed to. There are many academic books on Esan culture, language and literature that you'd find scintillating. I'll give you a reading list if you are interested.

By the way, avoid using Wikipedia for any authentic enquiry! Anyone can add anything there.

lol I know the difference between Edoid but you are the one trying to make Esan with five local government Benin. Urbhobos are just in a different state that all.My point two ethnic groups with Benin connection in the past but they are still Edoid.

Yea... One thing has made all the difference. URHOBO WAS NEVER UNDER THE BENIN EMPIRE LIKE ESAN! Draw the logic from there.

@Op nice job, but the list is incomplete. More so number 138, Gokana n khana are local government areas in Rivers State not tribes, they are the Ogonis.
Ogoni comprises of 3 local government areas, the 2 mentioned above and Tai LGA.
Ikwerre, the biggest tribe in Rivers State is omitted.
. Why do you exclude Eleme? Is it not part of ogoni too?

It is highly possible for you to know Urhobo more than me. There are Urhobo students and lecturers in DELSU and COEWarri who are not even Urhobos and they have published academic articles, books and chapters in books on Urhobo studies. I have no bias against them and I read their works to learn about my people. There is no shame in that.

Let me tell you something that you should carry on in life; THERE IS NO PRIDE IN ACADEMICS!!! No one knows everything so you have to be humble to learn and that has been my problem with you today! Calm down and learn if you dont know it. My knowledge of Esan didn't fall from the skies one day. I learnt it because I wanted to!!!

You've challenged me to even write a thread on Esan people. I'll mention you for you to learn more...

Okpe kingdom is one of the highly revered and respected kingdom in Urhobo land. The Orodje of Okpe is a First Class monarch and one of the most influential monarchs in Delta State. Okpe people speak a distinct dialect of Urhobo that has striking similarities to Isoko. Their dialect is almost unintelligible to other Urhobo speakers but the average Okpe man can speak and understand central Agbarho Urhobo. Okpe kingdom encompasses Orerokpe, the traditional headquarters, through Amukpe and Aghalokpe, to Sapele, the commercial city of Okpe kingdom! Other major towns include Okuokoko and Osubi which are in the Warri Metropolis, Oha, Okuodiete, etc.

Ask me what you want to know about Okpe people if you are interested cheesy
