The Federal Government has appropriated 93 Billion Naira to fund the first phase of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme.
Contrary to uninformed reports, the State Governments are NOT compelled to contribute to the scheme. Their contribution is welcome but not mandatory.
States will be active participants in the Home Grown School Feeding Programme, however, their counterpart funding is not required to start the programme's implementation. Willing states are however encouraged to complement the programme so it can reach more pupils.
This 1st phase of this programme will commence this year in 18 states. Three (3) from the six (6) geo political zones.
5.5 million school children will be fed for 200 school days in 18 states across Nigeria.
Besides fully funding the programme for pupils in primaries 1-3, the Federal Government will also provide technical assistance that will allow states design their context-specific state owned models. The assistance comes with partner experience and support in key areas of health education and agriculture, allowing the managers of the program to understand the concept of the “home grown” school feeding.
At the end of four years, we are hoping that the Home Grown School Feeding Initiative will be feeding 20 million primary school pupils.

confused govt.
why is the feeding programe in phases & in 18 states for the first phase.what happens to the other 18 states ?
parents have never complained to govt tht they cant feed their children,so why not invest this fund into our educational system by equiping schools with world class facilities & empowering teachers with latest teaching skills to enhance pupils performance.

- 93 billion naira is far less than what Dansuki alone was sharing among his cohorts. Anything wrong in Govt giving directly to the citizen where there will be no bogus contracts and rip off?
- There is an adage that says when you remove hunger from the poverty equation, the problem is half solved.
- Health is wealth. With children eating good food, their visits to hospitals due to various disease will reduce.
- This is a social benefit initiative by the Government to help her citizens some of whom are extremely poor.
- This will help school enrollment as this is one other incentive that will make school attractive to kids and in effect aid their learning.
- There are other aspects of the 2016 budget that deals with capital projects which includes equipping and furnishing public schools.
- Many have complained about how citizens of some countries are benefiting from social welfare package by their Govt, while there is none for Nigerians. What is wrong in Nigeria helping her poor citizens to feed kids who are in Primary 1 to 3?
- It is a token, but it will go a long way in alleviating poverty of some citizens.
- With the high price of fuel / subsidy removal due to fraud in the system and non availability of forex, consider this as a palliative to cushion the effects of the hike
- This initiative will create a snowball effect whereby farmers, food sellers, kitchen utensil suppliers etc will benefit, in an organised fashion.

Please, have you considered the ripple benefit s of the programme? Increased number of pupils enrollment, agricultural boost, and employment. Let look at the immediate positive side than negative side.

Some critics are hell bent to criticize this government just because of unguarded hatred for Mr President, even when this intention and programme means well. I am encourage by your choice of word "snowball effect". I concur absolutely.

Excuse me, this is a WHITE ELEPHANT PROJECT.

Anyone that give birth to children let him bear the responsibility of feeding.

Let federal, state and local govt be sincere in performing their constitutional responsibilities and pay salaries as at when due.

Let this government have a straight financial policy that will encourage investors both within and without.

Let them fix electricity and encourage science and technology in providing some raw materials locally.

Let them do all these and finally withdraw 100% from education and see whether our children will go to school or not. Whether they will have 3 (balanced) square meal or not. Whether anyone will wait for F.G to house, clothe and feed his wards.

Lastly, I believe no one is indigent. Give them work, and an enabling environment to do it, you'll be dazed in a short while with the positive outcome you'll see.

Remember, a lazy man deserves no food. So don't come and tell me somebody has graduated and got no job. IT IS A LAME EXCUSE TO ME.

THANKS

In my own case, I have been able to separate hatred for govt from reality.

The question is:
1. How long can they sustain this program?

2. What is the cost implication in the next four years?

3. What will be implication if same amount is sincerely channelled towards fixing electricity/ rural roads construction for reliable transportation of agricultural produce which is more beneficial to the people?

4. Why can't government handle governmental businesses and parents; parenting?

I don't expect such amount to end in septic tank without any return.

Quote me with honest answers.
Thanks.

misplaced priority if I should say. For how one do you want to continue helping the poor rather than expunging them from the shackles of poverty.

Anyway, let's see how it pans out

To me it is a total waste.

Feeding is a personal thing, it can only make some people richer.

It might work well in the north to increase enrollment but not in the East, where you have almost 100% enrollment.

This is a northern culture.

Provide a good learning environment.

Make studying attractive to them through provision of the basic materials as it is obtained in the West , not food.

Pay the teachers very well to boost morale.
