See foolishness of the highest order. You are among those southerners that will never act in a civilise way. Are you trying to say all southerners in the north are not in their right sense or what. For your information I do have Igbo friends in Kano.

please you will have to ignore my short hand notation and any error or mistake in words.

Everything you are about to read is my OWN personal experience and as such should be treated so

After my friend called me to break the news of my posting, Sleep left my eyes. it was past 11p.m, Nysc site was congested that we were able to pull through by 11p.m. oh God, why KANO STATE, what have I done.

Just like Job said in Job, "what i feared most have come upon me". I never wanted to serve in Kano state or any northern state even Abuja.

so I started preparing, I picked a ticket going to Kano state. before then I have read many articles and write up on Kano state, surely, it wasn't enough.

By 5:15 p.m we left ifeanyichukwu park Enugu state enroute Kano state, it was my first visit to a core Muslim state, I was for the next one year of my life to live with Muslims, the thought of Boko Haram, security, language problem etc filled my mind as we journey to the pregnant state. I wasn't comfortable, I had a mixed filling about Kano state. so we ran through the night. one thing I noticed as we entered Kano state is that day breaks by 5:30 everyday. once it is 5:30 a.m, everywhere is clear in Kano state, another interesting thing is that the sun rises by 6-6:15 a.m everyday and sets 6:30p.m reaching to a maximum temperature of 43.5 degree Celsius.

Can I use your story on our website?

It is very important to state that personally, Kano people are good. They are very sincere in dealing with people, they are united and above all ready to do anything for their people.

In my PPA, I learnt that Governor Kwankwaso who was the former governor ran free education up till tertiary institution. So education is free in Kano. this new administration introduced the payment of school fees, so they are not used to it.

When I was posted to where I am teaching, I thought that I can make money even though the school don't pay. they are many things one can do to get money in higher institution: handout, selling of solved past questions, tutorials and perhaps those that want to sort themselves out (for those interested). But when we settled down, I discovered that I was only dreaming, it was a mirage.

I was reading in the college of education and a group of students were doing tutorial, when I looked at what they were doing, I saw the teacher, their classmate was making a mistake, I quickly corrected them and taught them the course. After that meeting, they got my number and gave me their physics past question to solve for them. After solving everything I handed it over to their class representative who will make it open to his classmate only then did I realise that education is actually free. even to photocopy the solved past question, they can't. It was actually a waste of time. Work done by me was zero, effort wasted.

If you think you can make money through education in Kano, just know you are dreaming. You can't organise tutorial. When I wanted to organise one, my HOD told me that it must be for free or never.

I can't really say that I don't enjoy my PPA, despite the fact they don't pay, I saw it as a service to my nation, It is an opportunity to give them then real education they have missed. Most of them is just learning the basics of education even in a higher institution.

I met a lady alone in class supposedly reading, I went in because I was about to begin my lecture and my time is just remaining about 5minutes. so I went into the class, I tried to engage her in a discussion, she knows very well that I am a lecturer there. Beautifully looking, with the smile she was wearing on her face, I thought I am talking with the right person. when I started asking her about her course, since it relate to physics, I wanted to know how she is enjoying the course. To my greatest surprise she started replying me in Hausa language.

I was shocked, I told her (Ba Hausa: meaning, "No Hausa" ), she continued speaking her Hausa with smiles on her facem . I left been ashamed because she was not ashamed, when I went in for my lecture I wrote it boldly ba Hausa, as far as my classes is concern.

HIJAB

In Kano state, Hijab is not only necessary but almost compulsory. Either you wear Hijab or you cover your head, you have no other option than these. The only exception is in campuses and Sabongari. Even in campus its only 0.0002% of girls that don't cover hair.

Even children cover their head. Hijab is part of the school uniform for secondary school girls hear. The Osun state HIJAB issue is not obtainable in Kano state. Infact I have met more than 10 Christian girls in full Hijab. There is a Hijab I call fool Hijab. The one that has a long sleeve hand. Even Christians here wear it. Those Yoruba, Ekiti and benue Christians in Kano wear Hijab, and they have no option. I was shocked to see igbo girls with hijab, full one. They hardly leave Sabongari without covering their head. It's only through their words that you will agree that they are not Hausa.

They are just mandated to wear it. This is Kano culture, and they have got to obey it.
In the evening, this Kano girls wear only bra and hijab. since hijab is light and mostly transparent, one is able to see what they are wearing. Most of them wear singlet inside and hijab if you look very well, you will see through it. so the thing they are trying to cover is been exposed by their girls.

I have seen many things.

Kudos to you OP...

Your writing style is unique, it follows like a train of thought on paper, devoid of literary gymnastics but mesmerising and captivating all the same

I am glad, the idiots who have never read a book not translated from arabic did not dampen your spirit. You really approach your perspective with a open mind which I must say is a miracle considering overwhelming number of reasons not to; If those defenders of Kano knew they are doing more damage by attacking your view the wrong way....

I will never visit Kano or invest in Kano not because I dont think Kano is a rich place or highly developed.. no that's not why I won't visit Kano.

The reason why I will not visit Kano is this....if the educated kano youths who have come far enough to be able to visit nairaland and post comments hold such myopic and jihadi views of life, devoid of a universal values of tolerance in a faceless internet forum like this, if the "educated 10% of kano population who are supposed to be the "ELITES" can hold such sentiments, one even threatening the OP. ... I shiver and shudder at how the other 90% "regular" ab0kis will react

I dont think I share this sentiments alone. Millions of youths who have real values will never be caught dead in Kano. Kano might have been a great city, probably an African Dubai but for these ones... it is a dream that is dead on arrival

I must quickly state that Hijab makes most ladies in Kano look beautiful. I must confess that. Having state the fact that they are good looking, I should let you know they are cheap …, They are many beautiful girls in Kano, so the option of checking if a girl is beautiful is not necessary.

Muslim religion permits the a man to marry at most 4 wives. Let me tell you dear reader, if you are in Kano, you will be forced by what you see to marry four if and only if you are a Muslim or you want to convert.

I can't attribute their cheapness to anything than lack of exposure. Most of them only come out just to go to school. You won't see them come to fetch water or play outside.

Nigga you can use a small sample of a population to study the whole population. Thats how it's done in statistics. Any conclusion you arrive at studying a sample of the population is used to draw up a hypothesis about the entire population which becomes true. Or how do you think one should be able to study the entire large population? So get out with your cheap defence. I am also in kano right now! The guy that washes for me here don't even understand what is #50 in English, most times when I interact with him, I use sign language which isn't an effective means of communication. This is something that is not obtainable say somewhere in the east. An average 10years old in the east atleast knows how to speak pigin English. Infact in the east, the lowest level of education obtainable is ssce and such persons always still do count themselves as uneducated. Did I mention that my wash man is a guy of above 20?

my boy! my knowledge of statistics as a subject may be rusty as the last time i studied statistics was when i was in secondary school, but still yet i know is an aberration to use a single sample to describe a whole set. To find the average which describe any set of given population, data are analyze using mean, median or mode as a way to locate the central tendency of an given set of data. In the instance that was given by the OP, he deduct his findings from the account of the year one engineering course rep, thereby reaching the conclusion that Islamic study affect the performance general student population in physics negative in the school he lectures, clearly is inaccurate of conducting a research i expect much of a science oriented person and teacher.

I would have talked to you but for the sake of the thread let me let the sleeping lion be.

Talking to you is a waste of useful energy and at the end work done will be zero, effort wasted. I was thinking you know how research is been done but you just confirmed it's been long you touched where you claim to be expert. You really don't deserve this time

Its unfortunate OP had to be threatened by one of the posters here. But not everyone can hold his cool like you about issues irregardless of the medium.
Yes the OP has his views about Kano, Most exaggerated though. I dont think it is a crime to request for a little objectivity, like most have commented here. Culture & religion has a paramount effect on Kano way of life and for a newbie who is not used to this type existence would experience that Culture Shock. A city with over 10m population, even your neighbor wont always agree with you on issues dear to him.

I've lived in other parts of this country and also experienced stuff alien to my culture and values. But its quite easy for all of us to stereotype and put everybody in one pot. Every state has its peculiarities and we are quick to judge based on initial experiences. Learning is an everyday process, You dont expect a roman to visit Ghana and still see things like in rome.

OP Write on, but just be more Objective. Although, I find some of your assertions quite funny.

Sincerely,
An objective Ab0ki grin

I imagined how life in a high institution is, I have been through one. I also imagined how to deal and relate with females in dire need of go. what of those that will want to sort me, what of those stubborn guys, little did I know that education in Kano is different from what is obtainable anywhere in the world. I recently realised the type of life they lead in Kano state, it seems all my imagination is going to be in vain.

We were sent to the high institution corpers lodge, unlikely/luckily to us there is another college of institution close to our lodge. My colleagues were happy, they were about to be a sexual activists …, the accommodation wasn't too good nor too bad. we met with batch B corpers, they actually welcomed us with a fight between themselves. what led to it is a topic for another day.

I want to point out that things are not cheap in Kano state as people thought, only two things are cheap here: bread and onions. other things are costly. Light is also a problem and heat here is too much. I bath 4 to 5 times a day and my soap finishes every 3 days. I will relate them to other things very shortly.

should I continue
..... Depending on ur Local Govt, tins are cheap in Dambatta...

What a funny question smiley. From my little experience I will say hygiene is a personal thing. I know both clean and dirty southern chicks and vice-versa for North. So go and explore. P.S. The likes of Kwara, Kogi count as North too, most people up North aren't even Hausa. They just speak it.

wow.... very interesting thread indeed op.

I also served in Kano in 2014 and I can pretty much relate with some of these stuff written here by the op and others.

I do not really think the op intentionally set out to denigrate the natives, rather, he is only writing from his own point of view...but must be a bit cautious about how he goes about it.

Frankly, I believe Kano is a really great city; One where u can hit it really big especially as a business man, cos the opportunities that abound there are quite enormous and nobody dey look face (this is one aspect I find quite amusing)...
e.g husband fit dey help wife wash plate for her canteen as long as they are making it really big, nobody dey look ur face(common among d igbos of sabongari)... even as roadside buns and puff puff seller, ur husband fit dey assist u, nobody really send.... all na to make money (I tire!)

op u failed to mention the usual scenes u get on a typical Friday when everywhere is practically locked down. A whole busy expressway assumes a different function of a temporary mosque where worshippers line up it's length and breath for d entire duration of jumat prayers. No movements are allowed during this period. Infact, if u are Unfortunate to find urself on d road at dis time, u are forced to park ur car pending when prayers are over... lol.

Another quite scary scene u get on a typical Friday afternoon is the mammoth crowd that move together enmasse to places of worship.. it's so scary that u get a feeling of getting crushed if u are moving in the opposite direction to this crowd... lol.

And OMG, that inexplicable fierce look of determination registered on each face as they move in a large group... u begin to av a shrill feeling going through ur mind... and yes, they also occupy the front of ur shop and residence to perform their jumat.... and dem no born u well to talk, otherwise u go hear am.

Kano, oh Kano... I miss thee!
