An astute decision Sir. I think you're building for rentals so you're doing your tenants a huge favor.

Now to window hoods... What is the functionality of window hoods on the Windows aside from aesthetics? What is the use of having all round hoods (like photo1)? Is just a bottom hood not enough (like the other photos)?

Dont quote me on this.
What I sometimes see with artisans is that the lining of the windows may not be straight.
In some refurb/rebuilds that I have done (not in nija), what we do on walls is use angle beading. This gives that corner strength and ensures a neater job, a very good chance of ensuring the corners are straight as well.

In nija, although they use cement I find that depending on the skill of the bricklayer, they do not always get it straight. When you have window hoods, it will mask the problem from the outside, but not on the inside if its badly done.

Mind, there are 2 types of angle beading, one is used for drywall skimming and there is an external one used for cement plastering.

Many thanks.Very thought provoking. But my curiosity now is about those that mould the angle beads before fixing the windows. Especially for correcting from inside.

You know i am not an engineer. grin
When I saw a window which was not straight from the inside, I complained to the mason and this was fixed.
They dont mould angle beads, its like strong aluminium material, the one i showed in that picture is usually used for corners for internal skimming, the external ones are bigger, see pic.

I am guessing you mean precast window hood as they dont mould angle beads. I dont think that can correct from inside without some kind of remedial re-plaster and using a plum etc to ensure its straight.

More reason is better to mount/affix the windows before those hoods are done.

They do sand down walls in western countries as well, especially before painting.

Yea....sorry..I misconstrued your earlier write up. The angle beads would have been wonderful if we are able to use it here.

Yes sir...I totally agree for the windows to be fixed prior to window hoods being moulded.

I know someone that used subframes before the windows were dresses and I must confess that it came out nice, neat and fitted. Very minor openings were sealed silicon gel.
I ask all these because I am considering not using the hood at all or using the bottom one alone.

Sanding down was with sandpaper? If you have done panel beating in your car in Nigeria then I mean same procedure.

Meanwhile, I just got busy doing creative DIY hacks (using my Mack Truck Air Filter by Donaldson) over the weekend and also taking deliveries of my long awaited roof trusses.

@Erico2K2 here's a cheaper wireless combo fire/co2 alarm.

I may still go with Nest but will look closely at this one since its 50% cheaper.

KolaShangOne:

Earth rods m are used to earth the building in case of a bridge in the neutral line of the house. Not to arrest Lightning. I stand to be corrected
You just about summed it up.... same principle, different systems, different purposes

A building's grounding system
Protects occupants from mild shocks due to short circuit currents in the circuitry which could occur when a fault within an electrical device connects a live supply conductor to an exposed conductive surface. Such shocks could be experienced from touching kitchen sink, tiled walls, sockets and switches etc.

A lightning Protection system. Protects occupants from millions of volts of electricity (100-500)mill carried by lightning strike as a result of the potential difference between charged clouds (during a thunder storm) and the ground. That amount of electrical energy can turn a complete building to plantain chips or ...merely fry sensitive equipments, Depending on the magnitude.

The Good news is.... You could live in a location for 50 years And never experience a threat
The bad news is... you don't get a Memo when the shyyt is about to hit the fan

Bottom line, if you have a multi storey structure or built on an elevated ground, would be wise to do it... It's cheaper to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.
