Good.

Yes, tuition fees were not stated, I saw that. In fact, that was why I made a statement regarding proving that 'you are not a professional being sponsored by your company to come study at IFP'. If you are assumed as one, the tuition you will have to pay for the program is 30k euros. That is roughly more than 6 million naira. I agree that IFP is a little clandestine with tuition for non-professionals, implying, in my view, that it is subject to negotiation. To make you happy, IFP students are always asked to prove that they can cover their living expenses, not tuition fees. I don't want to make you too happy though, but I suspect that getting the admission is the main thing. Tuition is generally ridiculously cheap at public schools in France, and IFP is a French public school. You only need a contribution towards tuition. This can be agreed on with the director of PEM at IFP. Go to funding and read more, http://www.wec-france.org/DocumentsPDF/LABORATOIRES%20PARTENAIRES/IFP-School-English.pdf

Every agreement is made with IFP. The partner universities just offer study abroad opportunities to IFP students. It is called an exchange program, and students from the other partner universities and elsewhere also come to IFP for a specified amount of time, just as IFP students go elswhere. It does not mean that you will pay a new tuition fee to each of the partner universities you attend. It is simply a study abroad program and your to be parent university (IFP) takes care of everything.

Okay, begin to prepare for the tests. I now expect even so much more from you, considering that you will be graduating from a department that so many high flyers with whom I am familiar graduated from a couple of years ago. You guys used to have one Olu Ogboja, one very confident (some people say proud)man. Unfortunately, the guy kicked the bucket some years ago.

You may continue to ask questions and I will continue to give approximate answers. If they take you gberen and you prove yourself gberen, then you won't be far from landing that job that many people will only dream of.

All the best O.

T22.

*****Age also plays a major part in these things. Would you like to tell me your age? cheesy hahahha. I guess this is a weird question. If you find it as such, then please neglect it.
please i want to know how much oil companies pay fresh graduate of human resource without experience or masters. In figures. Your response will be highly appreciated

Just to answer a few questions here abt Nigerian IOCs.

1) It is my personal opinion that connections can get you in maybe 5% of the time. I do not want to say it's impossible which is why I'm going for 5%. Some of the brightest guys you all knew in school (those guys u call Efiko, who were dirt poor then) work for these companies now. When I joined joined about 7 years ago, I had the best engr grads from Ife, Uniport, Uniben in my set. So it is a fallacy in my opinion when we talk about knowing somebody to get in. These companies have the strictest internal checks even for recruitment.

2) A lot of people actually do not know what goes on in IOCs in Nigeria regarding pay and benefits. I'll give a rule of thumb though: if you know anybody that tells you his monthly basic salary is 1 million, know that it is about 55% of his total pay. He still has a lot of benefits some of them bothering on the absurd. For example, you get rent allowance which is more than 2.5 million for entry level where I work, safety allowance (0.5 monthly salary), furniture allowance, generative purchase allowance, generator fueling allowance, car allowance, car fueling allowance, security allowance, children education allowance, 13th month, success sharing, home ownership, end of negotiation pay, car refurbishment, field allowance, shift allowance. They even pay you if your child, spouse or parent dies. All these though are due to the unions. No management loves you that much to want to give all that. If you then factor in your typical yearly increase, you are not doing badly at all. Personally, my basic salary is five times what it was when I joined 6/7 years ago.

3) on NYSC, the company has a policy to absorb whoever NYSC sends to them until the quota is filled up. The advice is, get yourself posted there and report early. I'm not ruling out influence in this also.

4) on stock options, we typically don't do this. It was broached at one point but the opinion amongst employees is that they do not want to transact business with management in that way I.e. give me my money and I'll go do what I want with it.

I also do not agree with the sentiment that spending years abroad in the industry gives you certain competitive advantages when you come home. It is a global industry and the technology is the same so I fail to see the competitive edge. In the instances I've seen, you are benchmarked against employees of similar years of experience and hired on that grade. We do not hire managers from abroad, we promote from within or bring an expatriate to do the job. Note that anybody of Nigerian heritage is not an expatriate by the company definitions even if you have a foreign passport. You come as a Nigerian, simples. Good thing is people don't mind because nairaland payroll is fantastic anyways.

This is all I can think of right now.

P.S. I'm posting with someone else's ID.

So I read all the posts from the beginning till the post before mine and I must say, I've gathered a lot of info which I wouldn't have gotten elsewhere.

Well I'm currently studying for a BSc in information technology and I'll be in my final year this September.
Well I always wanted to study for a degree in petroleum and gas engineering but due to financial circumstances beyond the control of my parents, I had to settle for information technology.
The whole point of my write up is
1. I wanna know if it's advisable to switch to petroleum and gas engineering at masters level coz these last few years I've spent studying I.T, I found out it doesn't interest me at all.
And also
2. My dad said I'll have to get a post graduate diploma since I'm switching fields before moving on to my masters programme. How true is this?

Thanks in advance.

Hello gurus in the house. What positions/functions can a holder of an M.Sc degree in Power Engineering (with a B.Eng in Mech Eng) occupy, offshore or onshore in the petroleum industry?

1. Most new facilities have Gas Utilization Systems in their concepts and designs. They are powered by turbines, with redundancy in power generation systems, even with Diesel Generators. For some old facilities, where possible, they make modifications and introduce gas utilization systems too. So, you can easily work in this area. However, for some facilities/Oil companies you have to come in as a contract staff as these power packages/modules/trains are handled by consultants/contractors with their staff always on board the facilities 24/7. Companies like Siemens, Phillips, GE and Rolls-Royce make these engines and have their guys on board operating and maintaining these equipment. Their focus is strictly on generating the power.

2. Oil and gas facilities run electricity 24/7. Both on the process areas and within the accommodation modules. The network of electrical systems and components require maintenance, inspections, testing, repairs and modifications (where necessary). The maintenance crew usually have electrical engineers who handle a lot in this part. So, within the electrical, instrumentation and control aspects of operations, your skills and knowledge will be of great benefits and you can work with this team.

3. Within the oil companies also, you can work with a project team to make design calculations, design decisions etc. on the power train for facilities on various fields. You will properly look at concepts based on the general concept philosophy and choose a system/design that best suits that facility based on the philosophy of the particular project and it's requirements. In the Department of Petroleum Resources for instance there is an Engineering and Standards Division. They are involved in approving engineering designs for oil companies based on stipulated Nigerian oil and gas regulations as enforced by the DPR. And they even witness construction and do factory acceptance tests on oil and gas components both home and abroad.

4. On a lighter scale you wan work within the Safety Engineering Unit (especially in a company like Total that sensibly separates safety engineering from general HSE admin.). The general HSE guys do work permit stuff, accident reporting and all that. I am not saying they are not important. However, the Safety Engineering guys take it up very many notches. They work on equipment design and modifications based on pre-established safety concepts. Whenever a modification, upgrade or new equipment is being planned, they participate in the quantitative risk assessment. In Shell, they have a loss prevention team too that does stuff similar to this. This safety engineering team is usually made up of many manner of Engineers required in the oil and gas industry e.g Process,Structural/Civil, Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical,Instrumentation, Petroleum and Safety Engineers. You can easily fit in here.

The first scenario is however, your place of best fit.

My! What can I say! It's been like a long time since I posted this, yet, you took time to give this concise, professional and satisfactory response. I kept nodding as I read. My curiosity tank on the subject finally became full. I could not ask for more. You provided the answer in a manner such as I had not found anywhere else. Thank you for your selflessness. I am exceedingly grateful.

PS: I have been offered admission at Technical University of Munich to study Power Engineering, beginning this October. I have been further fired up by the career prospects you have listed.

If I may add, can I also take up a role in operation and maintenance of rotating equipment, compressors, pumps, valves, amongst others?

Hello again House,

Since no one has responded to my earlier request, I figured maybe it was solely because I hadn't furnished the house with enough information. Like I said, I need help getting employed at Total and it really would be a very kind thing to do for me as I need that kind of turnaround in my life at this time.
I have a BA degree and couple of years experience in Human Resources. I am a very hard worker, result - oriented and highly productive. So I'm just going to wait a few days then if I don't get anything here, I'm going to have to get my own placard. Hire me! Tooootal. Hire me, pleaaaaaaase.

Its indeed a blessing stumbling upon this thread at this hour of the day. This may further interest you to know my resolution in researching online unto my field of proffession.
As God may have it i'm a fully certified Bsc holder in petroleum engineering 2'1 from one of the few private uni's offering such proffession in Nigeria, despite my intial goal of chasing after some other profession.
That been said, we all know the recent challenges plunging the O&G industry epecially at the downstream sector. Thus leading to so many disheartning news of looming sacks befalling such vibrant sector also been worsened with the case of the "Niger Delta" scenario. Notwithstanding i'm a strong believer in the option for alternative Energy hence the pillar for fossil energy which is driving the world economy, thus of the view that this loophole-crisis in the sector is only emphemeral.

Please house, am on the verge of futhering my research into my field of study, hence pleadin for the assistance of anyone who could provide me a shot as an intern into the O&G sector which would help foster my exposure and experience in the field.

Thanks in advance

I can help but the field is question is a complex beast as we are yet to nail the OOIP because the reservoir sand is an injectite and therefore not visible on seismic. Let me know if all you need is production and injection data. I can send you something to work with.
