Depression, mental illness are real and it has nothing to do with religion. It's something you need to understand, unfortunately, you don't. Yes, it happens in the West and everywhere, which is why research is been conducted annually to find precise treatments and cures for neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Honestly, if Nigeria cannot effectively handle depression and anxiety disorders (how can she, when she has less than 250 qualified psychiatrists for a population of 185 million?). I shudder at how we'll handle the likes of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Betting isn't a western phenomenon. Asians bet more than westerners. Heck, Macau, Singapore, Japan have the biggest casinos and gambling rooms in the world. However, there are restrictions and a place for addiction specialists and psychological care.

Truth is: Majority of Nigerians are depressed and with the economic downturn, I'm not bemused at the increase in suicides.

well, you've made a good though, it is only 2 out of every 10 that can resort to committing suicide. many believe that whatever challenges or hardship they face it is their cross and they must carry it. there are a lot of people who have faced or facing the ordeal you described and yet they survived. that's why I said, facing challenges with full courage and with hope when there was no hope when one is in despair make one a real man and not suicide. although, the suicide temptation would rise but if one could think that suicide isn't the solution then one can devise means to survive any hardship.
