GHANA 1 vs 0 SOUTH AFRICA

Ghana secured bronze after beating South Africa in the third place match on Friday at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde.

Defender Linda Eshun netted the only goal just after recess to ensure the Black Queens went home with some pride, after yet again failing to break the jinx as far as the ultimate at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is concerned.

It was the third time that the West Africans had finished third after 2000 and 2004, whilst the Banyana Banyana replicated their performance two years ago in Namibia.

South Africa will yet again live to regret the countless goal scoring chances that came their way in an encounter that they were by far the better side in the opening half. They could have at least ended the first half with a lead but failed to make their dominance and control of the game count on the scoring cards.

Midfielder Refiloe Jane headed wide on 22 minutes from close range before Ghana goalie Patricia Mantey denied the former again on the half-hour mark after Andisiwe Mgcoyi had put her through.

Midway, the South Africans were dealt a huge blow when central defender Bambanani Mbane was stretched off and her place taken by Noko Matlou.

With the Ghanaians struggling in search of their feet, goalie Mantey was at her best yet again parrying a Janine Van Wyk free-kick just before the break.

Three minutes into the second half, Eshun scrambled home from a corner to give the Ghanaians a lead that they will hold on for the remainder of the game.

The South Africans had some good moments to draw level with Leandra Smeda, Mgcoyi and Mamello Makhabane all fluffing golden opportunities to equalize.

The introduction of skilful forward Thembi Kgatlana in the dying moments almost salvaged a point for the South Africans but it was little too late as Ghana clang on to victory.

Yeah but if Nigeria is good enough they should be able to carry the day. Cameroon usually have problem with their final crosses, and like the falcons could be very scrappy with their passes. They are not as tough as you think, just that we have some glaring weaknesses.

The Cameroonians have failed to register a single goal against the Super Falcons in four finals, I don't see it changing today.

Meanwhile,

I fear that the officiating in the final will be worse than what we've seen against Ghana or even South Africa in the semis. sad

With the massive home advantage, and Issa Hayatou in attendance, the falcons will not have it easy.

But...

Another 1-0 victory for the Super Falcons and voila!!

This is your Cameroon boy!! Found this thread online!!

We beat our lovely neighbors Nigeria only when it matters most: 1984, 1988 and most thrilling 2000 afcon male finals in Surulere (in what was arguably the best Nigerian team for that decade.
Winning against that Nigerian side on the eve of Valentine's Day in front of a packed surulere stadium was not the best valentine's gift to our Nigerian lovers.
You beat us in the quarter finals in 2004 but was not as painful because we already were champions for two straight editions.
We are coming for you in August. We love your beautiful stadium in uyo but like in 2000 finals we need to set the records right.
We love your movies and you are great at them but we just have that slight upper advantage in football.

Regarding the women, we in Cameroon have never been interested in this sport for women till last year when we qualified for the first World Cup. There is almost a non existent women football league in our country and all resources are geared towards the men. In fact the only reason why me/millions of Cameroonians are following this is because it is played in our home and has been billed as the rehearsal tournament for the 2019 Afcon to be hosted in Cameroon.
Nigeria has dominated the game and kudos to you for your consistency while the sport was still somehow in the shadows for most African countries. Now with the sport getting more limelight and interest, we also would really love to steal that spotlight this afternoon. Beating Nigeria this afternoon will mark the end of Nigerian domination and the beginning of a new era in women soccer.

For those citing Issa Hayatou and his Cameroonian roots as an excuse for the refs, am sorry for you.
Our glory days of 1990 World Cup and Roger milla, Samuel eto'o have never needed a helping hand from Mr. Hayatou and we really don't care if he is car president or FIFA president. Nobody said Switzerland are given Favours because blatter is Swiss. That is because they are just not good enof. Period!
If caf president was from Lesotho would they be able to beat Nigeria due to officiating? I don't think so!
If Nigeria was playing Mali for the finals and the refs were Malian, would Mali have carried the day?

Play your best game and hope to win!
In 2000 we could have been worried abt the ref as well because the finals were in Lagos. Instead we focused on our game and carried the day.

The winner of today will be the better side and of course the best female team in Africa!

Yeah it's just Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa and Equatorial Guinea in that order. The rest are still behind somewhat. Even Kenya beat some teams in Africa 4-0, 11-0, 8-1, etc and so their fans thought they had arrived and were good enough to storm Africa. Kenya went to Spain and thrashed some Spanish and Portuguese club sides, but in the AWCON proper there was no hiding place for them. This simply means that CAF cannot increase the number of teams from 8 until many other teams in the continent come of age. It's gradually happening tho.

other stars to watch
Nigeria:

Ugochi Desire Oparanozie

is a Nigerian football forward last playing in the Division 1 Féminine for Guingamp and the Nigerian national team

She is a member of the Nigerian national team, with which she played the FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments of 2011 and 2015.As a junior international she scored 2 goals in the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup and 3 goals in the 2012 tournament.

Oparanozie was also part of the Nigerian squads of the African Women's Championship of 2010 and 2014, winning both tournaments and scoring a free kick in the 2014 final

Ngozi Okobi is really the main star to watch. She reminds me very much of Perpetua Nkworcha. Her dribbles are outstanding, the way she displaces opponents and frees the balls to attackers.

Lol, excuses again. Cameroon like Ghana and south africa have been interested in the women's game for long but Nigeria has just been too strong for them. Now they have all improved which is a good thing for Naija. Kudos to you guys, we need more of this competition in Africa to shape the super falcons.

Quite myopic. Little officiating 'errors' can cost you a game no matter how good you are.

I am a Cameroonian nairalander and have got my ticket for the final game in Yaounde. I live in the town of Limbe where the Falcons played the group stage. I was a huge supporter with the stadium just two minutes away from my house. I was truly looking forward to a Cameroon - Nigeria finals as there is bound to be some quality football. Cameroon "Obosso" as we look forward to a 2 -1 win..Lol

Being worried about officiating days before a game is a sign of insecurity stemming from lack of confidence to me.

Quite myopic and dumb I must say. How does Isa Hayatou influence the "little officiating errors". Blatter was FIFA president for so many years and yet the Swiss never won the FIFA World cup! The Falcons have won the female nations cup a record nine times, was a Nigerian at the helm of CAF during their wins. Other countries like Ghana, SA and Cameroon have improved their game over the years Like Ih8naija rightly pointed. This is the first time I have seen a heightened interest in female football in Cameroon. Let the better side win as we look forward to some quality female football later today.
