honestly between eguavon, siasia and amokachi they just bungled our teams chances at that AFCON. aside the USA94 squad this one was the most balanced in terms of talent and squad depth. even a hot yakubu wasn't in this squad. the main problem of our team in that tournament was that we showed too much individual play instead of a coherent team pattern. this played out in all our matches. against ghana taiwo's scorcher won us the game, zimbabwe our superior talent wore them down, against senegal martins to the rescue, against tunisia nsofor, enyeama and mother luck saw us through. when we finally met an ivory coast team just as talented as we were their superior organization trumped our individualism. that team had so much promise under the right technical crew that squad should have won that the AFCON and went on to qualify and do great things at the world cup.

Icon4s:

Look at that AFCON 2006 Team again and tell me it is not a relatively strong squad compared to what we have had in the last 10years. Forget they finished 3rd.

To me talent alone can never win a trophy, u always need a strong will power and stronger luck. Nigeria had too many chiefs and not enough Indians. To me this current team is better balanced than any we ever had and also less selfish.

I don't completely agree about the individualism in that team. That team was very balanced and with squad depth.

You recall that quarter final battle against Tunisia who were the then defending champions?

They met a superior and star studded Ivorian Team in the semis. Our tactics failed us that day.

I do not know when goals became the criteria for wingers especially in a Super Eagles teams that had so many potential scorers. You also failed to include that Musa played as a striker several times for CSKA and his stats are not that much better the Tijani. Tijani was purely a winger.

I can not remember a bad game for Tijani, point blank but I can remember several that Musa was frustrating.

Tijani was not always a starter in a star-studded Super Eagles team.

Musa will struggle to get into that team on his best day, he is even struggling to start nowadays with Simon Moses, what if he was dealing with Finidi.

To grade consistency, we need average performance rankings and more detailed statistics. Finidi George was not a scorer either but he created far more goals.

Would you say, Musa is more consistent because he scored more than Finidi?

Some Players in that Ivorian Team:

Kolo Toure
Didier Zokora
Salomon Kalou
Aruna Kone
Didier Dogba (The lone goal scorer)
Bakari Kone
Aruna Dindane
Siaka Tiene
Yaya Toure
Emmanuel Eboue
Romaric
Boubacar Barry (goalie).

Those players were at their smashing peak. That Ivorian squad na die.

that the tunisians were defending champions doesn't explain our lack of uncoordinated play against them if its that zambia were defending champions in 2013 got knocked out in the first round. us defending champions didn't even qualify for 2015 AFCON so we that point doesn't hold much water.

the ivorians of 2006 were not clearly superior to us. drogba was still building his reputation in world football. yaya toure wasn't yet the beast of a player he is today. solomon kalou hadn't yet agreed to play for them. comparing both squads there were areas where we clearly had superior players talent like midfield, goalkeeper, wingers. in terms of tactics pray tell what kind of tactics did we employ?yes i agree they were better than us but only organization wise.

Pls read my view critically,am not using goals to judge. My question is simple, pls what make Tijani more consistent than Musa?Prove it and i w keep quiet.

Pls do the average ranking and statistics of d two player and paste it,then let see may be i w agree with u than ordinary comment.

Pls enough of saying d new eagles w find it difficult to break into old generation squad.I had d opportunity of watching d old and d new eagles,so i know what am saying, our young lads deserves little respect.

I read your post and you used appearance and goals stats which does not tell the full story and is a fairly shallow assessment.

I watched both players from the beginning of their careers so my view is based on what i saw from both of them.

Like i alluded to earlier, It is my subjective opinion, unfortunately we did not have as much stats as we do today to do a better analysis.

Tijani never disappointed when he played.

Iwobi pleased to open UCL account

Alex Iwobi scored his first goal in the Uefa
Champions League for Arsenal on Tuesday as the Gunners beat FC Basel 4-1 in Switzerland.

The Nigerian star reacted well to steer home
Mesut Ozil’s low cross in the 53rd minute at a
parked St Jakob Park.

Iwobi who scored an own goal in Arsenal’s last
Champions League game – a 2-2 draw at home to PSG – was understandably pleased to get off the mark at the right end.

“Pleased To Get My First Champions League Goal But Most Importantly, Good To Finish Top Of The Group,” he wrote on Twitter via @alexiwobi.

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger also spoke
about Iwobi’s debut goal in the competition
explaining that it will do the striker’s confidence a world of good.

Iwobi will now be keen to repeat his recent form
in the Premier League where he is yet to get off
the mark after making 10 appearances for the
Gunners in that competition.

Kanu would be in a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 formation, alongside Aghahowa.

He isn't mobile enough to play in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system. He's also not strong enough to be a lone target man

U are so right about that 2004-2006 generation. And to also think they were set up around greats like: JJ Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, Celestine Babayaro and Wilson Oruma.

That was the era we had an Obafemi Martins that was setting the seria A and Champions league alight, an Ayegbeni that scored goals with ease in the EPL being d highest ever scoring Afrocan player before Drogba erased the records. A John Utaka that was a toast of the French league- best Nigerian striker in French league since after Ikpeba. What of the one called Aghawonder that only needed quarter of a chance to find the net. Not to also forget the young Osaze that was at Locomotive Moscow before moving to CSKA. And know King Kanu was still very much in the frame of things.

The midfield had a blend of Experience and youth as we had the likes of Okocha, Oruma, Obodo, Ayila, Olofijana in one squad. Not to also forget that youngsters like Mikel, Keita and Ogbuke joined that midfied im 2006.

In the defence Babayaro was there and then handed over to Taiwo in 2005. Odiah our last recognised RB. Yobo was at his peak and Partnered mostly with Joseph Enakarhire. All conquering Enyimba captain-Obinna Nwanneri was also part of the defensive set up. Abbey was there at 2004 AFCON-another quality RB.

The 3 best goalies in our land then were 1st, 2nd & 3rd choice goalies: Enyeama, Ejide, Ayenugba. Any of these 3 would be in goal and we'ld be rest assured.

What that team lacked was a good technical adviser. Christian Chukwu, Eguavoen and Amodu could nt deliver with this stars studded team

Chai...I remember Yusuf Ayila. Whatever happened to that guy. There was a time they said he was Edgar Davis and Seedorf rolled into one. At a point, Juventus was looking to buy him. He played one champions league match he played against Borussia Gladbach in 2011 or so where he completely dominated the Germans. Memories!

Yeah... I know... smiley I was actually hinting his absence due to the set-up you chose. smiley

He's more of an SS.

His mobility slowed down much shaa after his heart condition episode.

Just look at the options we had in the early 2000s.... Splendid! smiley

That WC 2006 miss did a lot of harm. sad

CFCman:

Kanu would be in a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 formation, alongside Aghahowa.

He isn't mobile enough to play in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system. He's also not strong enough to be a lone target man

Chaiiii... Sir Joseph... Your head dey dia Sir. Likened to Edgar Davids indeed.

I remember Ayila Yusuf for that game he played against Real madrid. He excelled so much in that game that he got rave reviews post-match. I think it was Zidane or who again? who commended him after the game and exchanged shirts with him (not too sure again).

And yes, I also remember his penalty miss against defending champions, Tunisia in the Quarters of the 2006 AFCON (we have an intimidating record against defending champs at the Afcon... We always seem to knock them out or beat them).

He had a really fine game and almost spoilt it with that miss but the super brilliance of Vincent enyeama shone through (3 penalty saves in the shoot-out and 1 penalty save in regulation time... 4 overall on the day!).
