You getting it all Wrong, what I meant was I dont have a personal Computer to practice on. I practice Cafe system, Friends Computer etc.

If you want to be good at programming, don't focus on programming.
Focus on interesting projects, concepts and great ideas you'd like to "conquer". Let your choice of programming language be a necessary means to accomplish the goal - that way, no language will be boring to you.

Thanks for the advice. That was intially my plan. However, I'm getting deterred by the mind numbing obstacle of learning boring languages............. I'm even planning to stop learning PHP completely and go to Java and python straight....

It seems you are not eager to developed your first application on web platform but desired to learn programming skill, right? If yes, then go for Python language. With python language you will master diverse programming skill and be able to build web applications in no distance future. Mind you, web programming i.e. web application development is a subset of the programming skill you will learn.

Broda i have not attempted php oh but i can tell you merely looking at all those syntax makes me wanna loose hope on the computer world. Anyways my html and css rocks all the way cheers.

@All, I want to learn programming too, and I have started studying HTML, then CSS, then jscript, then PHP in that sequence.., but this stories am hearing about PHP, makes me wanna "gbes"! but I ain't gone give up! and beside, am lookiing at doing MCSA - the database track, I mean MS SQL Server 2012, I have SQL server instance installed on my ubuntu, for study purposes and practise and also doing some reading with CBT nugget, (video tutorial) on 70-461 exam..

So I need advice, should I continue learning programming alongside my MCSA or should I just focus on my 70-461,
but I read it somewhere that, to do well in IT you have got to be versatile!!!

I learned PHP before moving on to Java and I can say learning PHP turned out to be time well spent because the only new thing I'm learning in Java is just syntax.

The problem with so many people is that when they want to learn programming ,they always jump straight into a language and start racking their brain .Some people where persistent enough and made progress.Its like learning how to build a house by building a house
But i believe learning THE FOUNDATIONS OF PROGRAMMING , is very important ,in this case is learning how to build a house by first understanding the raw materials ,why they are what they are ,and how they work together to form a house.
Using this method I picked up php in less than 48 hours (i am not kidding).
Learning the fundamentals of programming is awesome ,just like the analogy of building a house i gave ,if you learn the fundamentals of programming ,you would be able to build any house (software/web app),making use of just about any tool/size of shovel(language) given to you.

So, about a week or so ago; I started learning programming. I started with the basics: HTML; CSS and Javascript.

HTML was bulky at first because I was using normal Windows Notepad. It was not until I learn about HTML editors that Web development became intresting.

HTML became fun, rather than waste time typing tags in full; I just type some words and voilà, it appears!!!

I brushed through HTML feeling fly; and cocky.


Next came CSS. Even better than html because it gives you the chance to experiment with colors, backgrounds, pattern.

It also reduced the stress of creating tables, forms and the like.

All in all; a great language.


Next came Javascript. At first; I got exicted thinking it was JAVA, until I realized (was told actually); that it's not even related. That was a downer.

However, Javascript no be beans oo... Although, it's fairly easy to grab and has amazing capacities; The codes for it are a bit bulky and requires a bit of mental gymnastics to memorize the paths you take.

Javascript opened even more intresting applications...... I finally understood the javascript alert and could build basic arithmetic tables.

I can even write some basic equations.....all in Javascript.


After learning all those, I was happy. After all, I've learn how to create, beautify and perform operations on webpage. I'm set to build webpages, right



Wrong.



Little did I know that the monster called PHP was waiting for me.

From the beginning, it was boring.

From variables, strings, foreach loops,
mysql_real_escape_string.........

I would rather watch a 1927 chess match




So please, programmers in the house, tell me;

I just felt like picking up some valuable skills and programming seems a valuable skill to have.

Because PHP is a language with many similar functions, beginners tend to write poor code at first, scrapping in whatever code they get online. When you learn PHP "the right way", you'd surely enjoy it. Most beginners just copy PHP code to solve a particular problem without even understanding the copied code.

If you master PHP and JAVAScript, you can earn a very decent living in Nigeria, if you know what you are doing. If you think of this when learning, that should encourage you not to give it. Let the code look boring, but you will earn money with it in time.

Follow good coding conventions and best practices. Also try doing something a level higher than what you've done before, it doesn't need to be a large-scale product, it could be very small projects with very specific functions that will help you grow as a developer.
Don't be scared to try new things.
