Igala is a Yoruboid language, so expect to see a few Igala names that look Yoruba. The Catholic priest he is talking about is probably Fr Hyacinth Jemigbola, an Anambra Igala from Igbedor, in Anambra West, LGA.
I would do my research.. Jemigbola doesn't sound anything close to Igala.. If anything, igala names sound Igboish.. He Probably have a yoruba mother.

And he took his mother's maiden name as his surname? Where in Nigeria does that happen?

You probably also think Adejo/Adejoh is not an Igala name because it looks Yoruba.

Your latter assumption is out of place.

Igala names and Yoruba names do not share any similarities even though the two languages are related. Instead we share names with Idoma people.

I have never heard any of my people bear Jemigbola as a name before. However, if pronounced to sound like Igala the name means 'allow me hear word' in pidgin english. Cant find a better way to put it in english. Anybody Igala may bear that name but i must confess, that name is not popular and even after living most of my life in Igala land i have never heard that name before. I guess i am late to this thread.

It isn't a popular name. When I looked around I found only a few people that bear it. And most of them seem to be from Anambra.

intelligent summit. Jemigbola in yoruba would mean: 'allow me carry/have wealth'.

Sir, Why is it that ABS &NTA don't read news in igala same way it's read in Igbo??
this is just one of the lot...

think about it, if igala has a population of 2% against igbo population of 98% in anambra, of what benefit will it be to 98% of igbos in anambra who don't speak nor understand igala to listen to news broadcasting In igala language, could it be the case of the tail waging the dog?, their population is still insignificant for now, though I never knew there are igalas in anambra, am happy they are not discriminated against apart from their language allegedly going extinct. I expected you to advice them to form an umbrella body that will help them push for local radio studio instead of inciting for hostility and ethnic striving, afterall, according to the OP, they broadcast in igala language but complain of the short timeframe.

You have two options

Yi assimilate
Or cross the river back to igalla

But don't worry Igbo and igalla have historic relationship

IGARRA people in edo don't speak Igala. They actually speak EBIRA language.

You are wrong too. Igarra people speak Etuno (Oshuku) language and not Ebira.

I have been reading comments here and have been laughing hard at peoples display of ignorance and limited knowledge. Let me state again like i did in the early pages of this thread that the man Rev. Fr. mentioned earlier is my uncle, i mean my moms immediate younger brother. He's currently in Maryland, USA. The name Jemigbola is an igala name that means 'allow me hear word' if translated into pidgin English. It is more common among we igalas in the east of the Niger and a little among the Ibaji people in kogi state. However, igalas from idah, dekina, ofu, ankpa etc are not familiar with it and will have a hard time believing it to be an igala name. I know this because i studied in Kogi state university of which i spent my four years there informing my ignorant Igala friends and colleagues that there are Igalas outside Kogi state particularly in Anambra and that i am from there. The mainstream Igala spoken in kogi state is significantly different from what we speak in Anambra, so also is our mannerism and culture. We in Anambra tend to behave and dress like the Igbos due to years of acculturation while those in kogi behave and dress like the hausas. I would not want to bore you guys but i can even tell the story behind the Jemigbola name as told by my mum.

Even if their population is 0.5%, they're not insignificant and a news bulletin in Igala will be targeted at the supposed 2% Igalas and not the 98% Igbos.

I just made a new friend who is from the Igala speaking part of Anambra. I can't remember the exact place now but she says it's close to Anam and surrounded by water. By seeing her the first ting that comes to mind is Igbo. Even when i asked her which tribe she was, she said Igbo. It's not until i started digging that she made it known that she's from the Igala speaking part of Anambra state. But she still has the Igbo approach towards life and i think if Igbos and Igalas from Kogi were to go to war, she would side with Igbos. She just seems like your typical Igbo person. I'll really like to visit the Igala speaking part of Anambra to really see how it is over there.

I can bet that your friend is either from a town called Igbedor which is where i come from or Odekpe, or Inoma or Ode, or Odomagwu or any of the remaining over 10 igala speaking community in that axis of Anambra.

The Yoruba equivalent would be Jemigboro. "Allow me hear word."
Ola would be more similar to Ora or ara, which is Body.

Ya the people love Anambra state a lot, even if given the option to remain in Anambra or join others in Kogi, they would prefer to remain in Anambra.

It depend on the part of kogi Igala the person speaks, like Southern Igala(Ibaji) we understand it and they also understand us. But for Northern Igala like anyimgba, Dekina I don't understand at all even though I know that it is that they are speaking.

We are just like an average person Igbo person, you meet our people in every part of Igboland and outside Igboland but you may not know that he or she is from there unless he or she gives you an in-depth explanation because we speaks Igbo, answer Igbo name. We travel by boat or by land to ONITSHA, we are closer to ONITSHA and Asaba

You're correct, we are culturally Igbo yet we still maintain some core igala heritage. Yes we also speak Igbo as a subsidiary language and bear igbo names too. There is a fair level of bilingualism.

We travel across the river Niger first then we avail ourselves of other means of transportation depending on where we intend to go.
