Never mentioned economics. And the threat is not to America directly but to nations surrounding Russia eg Ukraine, Afghanistan. The US is highly interested in making sure Russia does not form a competing hegemony.

Because they more or less accurately foresaw Russia as the next biggest threat that could spark a world war. That evaluation has not changed. That's not a comparison. It's meant to remind of the history of how belligerent States behave. Russia has always wanted territory, the US wants to block that as much as possible. NATO is critical to US strategy.
