The Disgraceful Thing Called Salary In Nigeria by Nobody: 2:09pm On May 26, 2017
Okay, I was a little harsh. Salary is what you earn after a month of hard work, putting sweat and blood into what you do, completing your own end of the employment contract you signed. What you earn should in no way be disgraceful. While I will like to continue to tell you sweet things about the nobility of hard work and how much you should be proud of what you earn, there's something more important on the table.

Everyday I come online and I marvel at the sight of what graduates in Nigeria earn. Fifteen thousand naira (#15,000) salary jobs now make it to the front pages of all our popular Job boards, it's very sad to say the least. Data released by Stutern sometime ago seem unbelievable but hey, it's the harsh reality of how unappreciated hard work is in Nigeria. I know what my friends earn, I know what I earn. If I was to ask Nairalanders to start posting how much they earn, I'd most likely get comments from those that earn the big bucks which is just fine smiley. Many of us will rather not comment as the figure will most likely come below the illusion the world has created for herself. Our neighbors, our GFs and BFs, Our Parents, Friends and Family all think we are big shots, which we indeed are, our payslip just isn't giving us much credit cheesy

If you're reading this, there is a 7/10 chance that you are on the look out for another job, possibly because you want to earn more. More Salary smiley. Believe me when I say you most likely wouldn't get paid your true worth unless you get real lucky.

If you are in your early twenties, please pick up that 50 - 70K job. It's okay you may not want to tell your friends how much you earn, they too may be in the same situation. Congratulations if your salary is in millions smiley, please don't make the mistake of looking down on those that earn thousands unless you're going to admire their shoe, don't make their job and life anymore difficult in the Office as you never know what tomorrow.

To every young man and woman out there that is trying to make a living, don't loose hope. Your salary is a means to an end, not the end in itself. Let your happiness be priority over your pay check. Your salary isn't the end in itself, your salary is the means to the end.

Your salary is disgraceful, but with that disgraceful salary you can plan a better future for yourself. No matter how little or much you earn, don't live from hand to mouth, let that meagre pay make a difference.

Sincerely,
NairaSand smiley

Good piece.

Sometimes, it is not basically about salary. Some employees make their salary in a day while some make theirs in a week or two.

The best kind of job is your own business. But if you are lucky to have a job where you can make 200% of your salary monthly, keep it. Save as much as you can. Set an achievable target and when you attain that level, you quit. Shikena!

I sorta kinda disagree.

We all want different things out of life and we have a right to. It's okay if Dingbang want to do business, by all means please do business. Just be kind enough to let those of us that are nor persuaded nor interested have peace.

It's really not too much to ask.

Enough with bashing Nigeria

Let's cut to the chase, you're lazy and dumb

Do you have friends ?? Do they live in Nigeria ?? Ain't they successful ?? They didn't waste their time in the University like you

You think it's easy anywhere else ??

It's even hard to get a good paying job in America,
wake up from your dreams, you think America is what they show you on TV ?? You wanna see pictures of the real American?? Many of them live paycheck to paycheck

And if you ever get arrested for any minor offence, you will never ever get a good paying job

Stop complaining, there are millions of jobs in Nigeria waiting for lazy people like you but you're too lazy and not so smart to figure things out

All my family members have a good paying job in Nigeria, where do they work ?? In Iraq ??

Stop complaining
What about those people i see every morning going to work, driving an expensive cars and owns a house (they pay everything in cash, no credit, something Americans don't do), where does those people work ?? In heaven ??

Any "Graduate" who work for less than #30000 a month does no deserve the certificate he or she has.

C'mon, 30k is something you can make conveniently without having to be a puppet to any man under the guise of being the boss.

Fu* *ing find yourself and be your own boss except, of course is the salary is mouth watering.

All over the world this "salary" is a very tricky issue, i still dont understand why a 'pop star' earns more than a 'brain surgeon' or a 'footballer' earn more than a 'professor' angry

Our society is like a ladder. Your salary grows according to your value. What value are you bringing to the market. What differentiate you from other jobless youth. Work on yourself first. Become more valuable. Dont try to change the rain or soil or weather or even seed, work on yourself. Everything is measured according to value. You are not paid according to the amount of time but according to value. Why is the salary of a CEO different from the janitor. Watch demand and supply.
It is not a tragedy to start on a low salary but it becomes when you are not growing. What a pitiful way to live.
I am an employer of labour and get to meet these entitled generation youths looking for a job. They want to buy limousine with their first salary. Money is a reward for bringing value to the market place. If I pay you more than you are worth, then that is suicide
@ LEARN TO WORK HARD ON YOURSELF THAN ON YOUR JOB.
There is no reward for hardest workers. Consider the salary of a daily labourers to your own. They have the most tedious work and yet receive less.

Thank you. Not everyone is wired to do business. Some are just happy with their 8-5 jobs. Do whatever makes you happy.

Don't look down on those who prefer office jobs or impose your opinion on them.

By the way, if we all become sellers, who will buy?

thank you very much.
The way some people comment on public fora leaves me wondering whether they are the graduates they claim they are.

Business is not for everybody. People should begin to get that into their heads. Of course, that's what happens when the system fails, people now only see things from a narrow point of view

Fortunately or unfortunately those that are brave will hire those that are not to help the brave ones achieve their dreams. In reality everyone can't be at both ends I.e. Everyone can't be entrepreneurs and everyone can't be employees. We all need one another.

There's nothing bad with wanting to be an employee but because of the hypernormal greed of Nigerian employers (entrepreneurs), they are fine with paying corruption-inducing salaries.

For goodness sakes there's what is called livable wage!but not in Nigeria.

U talked like this? I laugh!! U think na all the expensive cars u see are legit money, abi? My brother.. he never mentioned life is easy anywhere.. but minimum wage in Nigeria is a disgrace..

At least the countries u mentioned already have basic needs sorted out.. we still pay for electricity which we dont get to see and buy expensive fuel.
I dont have strength to argue bikoo.. He did a good write up.. From poor educational system to unfriendly labour market.. who u go blame?

Salary in Nigeria is rubbish!!!...

I had a chat with someone who's working at a filling station (petrol station) days ago in UK and she earns £1000 in a month . Imagine when you change that to our Nigerian currency . OKAY, LET'S DO A LITTLE MATHEMATICS

£1pounds = #300 Naira (definitely more than this )

She earns 1000.

1000 × 300 =300,000

So SHE EARNS 300K EVERY MONTH .

Tell me why wont she be happy and proud of her job, she have bills to pay and she'll still keep some change for feeding and savings ....you're a graduate right ?
tell me what bills you want to pay from 15k per month and where is your savings ...lol
Here in Nigeria, I can't even walk up to a lady that works at a FILLING STATION andwoo her , I will be told I just finished downgrading myself....gosh. sad
HOW I WISH MAKE I BE ONE PETROL SELLER FOR UK, I GO DEY SAVE 200K EVERY MONTH ...HOW MUCH BE THAT FOR 1 YEAR??

Going to the university and consequently seeking for employment largely benefitted our father's generation and regrettably, many people still operate under the thought that employment is the way to go. The world is moving towards the direction that will require less human to do the job. In many countries, it's like this. People are underemployed, underpaid and basically hate their job, it's merely worse in Nigeria but it is a global thing. In a capitalist market where humans are used as a commodity to make a profit, it will always get worse.
