Hope4pple: You're Yoruba point blank. Dont be disrespectful to your father's culture. Your paternal side determines your ethnicity (Yoruba). As of right now, Nigeria is garbage. So dont wish bad things unto yourself. |

Ileke-IdI: Seriously! You're kidding right? How the hell does appreciating both my father's and mother's culture mean I'm being disrespectful to my father's culture. If tomorrow I chose to pledge allegiance to the United States and not Nigeria (because the country is filled with people who can't think logically) , what you think does not freaking matter!!! |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFYZ3KHEXYI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2w3cOyvPjA&feature=related >This is a White American women speaking Ijinle Yoruba. The other video even shows her in Lagos speaking it to other Nigerians. Just to prove that Yoruba is out there and spoken by others not just by Nigerians. She even gave herself a Yoruba name Titilayo. >I'm not saying Yoruba or any other Nigerian tribe is more influenced. The hell with that. For you cant say what you dont really %100 know >Who said Yorubas are only in the U.K and dont travel any where else? Like I said dont say what you dont %100 know esp. if you havnt took a tour everywhere in the world. Yorubas are also flooded in the U.S of A. >Overall its mostly Ibos and Yorubas that mostly travel abroad. It just depends on where you live, that you will find them. Cuz the area that I live is flooded with Yorubas, than Ibos. Most Nigerians live down Southern U.S, such as Georgia, Virginia, NC, Boston, Texas, Florida (I guess its cuz were used to hot weather) and others live in Northern areas such as Chicago, NY, NJ, Maryland to DC, & Philly and other areas, like Cali, Arizona & Seattle. I know cuz I talk to Nigerians on facebook And No, Not all Nigerian musicians put Yoruba in their music. You cant generalize ALL. Some do, but not ALL. There are some musicians that do put some yoruba in their music. P-square in Omoge Mi, 2face Idibia- some parts of his songs esp. Only Me, Samklef & D' Prince in Molowo Noni, Bracket- Ada Owerri video, the first 20 secs they sing a yoruba intro. Bracket- Maronumo. And etc. |

My respects to all. I am a foreigner and do not want to participate in an internal discussion. Respect all the languages of Africa, but as for South and Central America, I agree that the Yoruba is the most widespread. Of course this in no way implies value judgments. Also in many countries Kikongo root words (if I remember correctly Angola) that have become part of everyday Spanish language. I understand the explanation of this interest in Yoruba language originates in the rich traditions of the Yoruba left in these countries, and we must not forget that historically, the last despicable traffic of slaves brought to America were mostly made just for Yoruba , and the declared freedom for slaves in the great majority of countries quickly, the Yoruba had yet to clarify its language and traditions, so it was possible to maintain, very unlike other ethnic groups. I hope I have offended anyone, this is not my intention, just trying to make a contribution. Kind regards to all the brothers on the forum. 4 Likes |

Yoruba people are found not just in Nigeria but in Ghana, Togo and Benin as well. This would account for the high numbers of the speakers of the language amongst those who were carried away as slaves and their descendants. The Ewe are Yoruba and the Yoruba are Ewe; the proof can be seen in the Ifa divination which the Ewe also practice. The Defoid/Yoruboid languages refers to that spoken by peoples who say they came from Ile-Ife. The Yoruboid language group is said to include the Yoruba (Edekiri) languages/dialects and Igala language. The Igala say that the Yoruba and Igala used to be together as a group and that the Yoruba are descendants who migrated westward. Researchers have noted that the both languages are very similar. The Edekiri languages/dialects spoken across West Africa include and in the diaspora include: Ede Cabe Ede Ica Ede Idaca Ede Ije Ede Nago Ede Nago Kura Ede Nago Manigiri-Kambole Ife Isekiri Lucumi Mokole Ulukwumi Yoruba Perhaps the Lucumi speakers in Cuba are descended from Ulukwumi in Delta state. http://www2.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=edekiri |

amor4ce:Dear friend amor4ce Reading his interesting presentation, I noticed that you separate the Yoruba language of the "Lucumi" languaje. The term "Lucumi" is widely used on the island of Cuba to refer to both the Yoruba language as them. In my work as a researcher, some documents refer to the term "Lucumi" became so used to calling the Yoruba, under which they (the Yoruba) very often used the phrase "Lukumí" that mean something in Yoruba as "my friend". I clarify that I have no firm basis of Yoruba language and that this comment does not question his claim, but on the contrary, I consider extremely valuable, and that calls into question a misconception. Promptly let her interesting presentation, I think fair to infer that the word "Lucumi" that are called the Yoruba in Cuba, as well as their worship, rooted in a language (no doubt spoken by them), not in this story that is so strange , Thank you very much for your valuable input! High_Chief:Dear friend High_Chief. You say you are "en casa" , Are you Spanish speaking? It would be a joy for me to find here someone who also speaks Spanish , My respect and thanks for your kindness. Warm regards to all members! 1 Like |

The Yoruba-speaking people of Cuba who are called Lucumi just might be the descendants of their fellow Yoruba speakers in Delta state of Nigeria who call themselves and their Yoruba dialect Ulukwumi. Note that some Igbo people on this forum have been trying to claim the Ulukwumi as Igbo. |

^^^ The government of Finland enacted a policy that primary school children who have a mother tongue other than Finnish have the right to be taught their mother tongue in school. In the city of Helsinki, for instance, if you can find four children of Igbo descent, they are automatically entitled to a Igbo language class, as long as a qualified teacher of the language can be found. |

mbatuku2:Mhhh is complex ... The deal was not just in large plantations and mines, which were concentrated in large numbers of slaves ... Possibly, in countries like mine (Uruguay) treatment the slave was not so hard ... but that's because there were large concentrations of slaves (Because of the type of tasks). But I can assure you, that the reason for the survival of the Yoruba language (or other) was not due to the benevolence of the masters, but the tenacity of the slaves. The same happened with religious cults. The first thing done by the masters, when they got new slaves was: 1. Baptized with a Catholic name 2. Prohibit language and African cults 3. If possible, separate the slaves of the same origin, and ethnic mix with traditionally encountered (to avoid disturbances) My respects to all 2 Likes |

amor4ce:The Lucumi are Igbo. They are a section of Igbo aborigines of Ile Ife. That is why after they were dislogded from Ile Ife, they came and took refuge among their kin, the Igbo in Aniocha, deep in Igbo Land. The Anioma are the indigenuous Lucumi people. |
