I guess anyone who is very observant should know that charging your phone with a laptop rapidly depletes its lifespan

You are right. It reduces the lifespan

Your usages aren't same. I'm quite sure you are more busy and use more apps than your Dad. For me, it's just slow charging. One of the habits that kills batteries, is completely draining it before charging.

Effect on battery life is insignificant and inconsequential.
Recent studies have shown that slower charging last longer and save battery life.
quickcharge and other fast charges gotten from normal 2A charger are detrimental to battery health in long run, it think its in the terms and conditions for those that read It.

The real concern of charging with laptop is phone memory, the cumulative effect of usb mass storage recognition and removal (without unmounting) cause memory distortion you start getting "unfortunately memory has stopped" query and other problems.
So charge with moderation and try to unmount before unplugging the phone.

Someone can use a cord meant for strictly charging instead of a data cord.

Studies has shown that Charging your phone with a low current rated charger, USB or laptop source weakens the battery and makes the phone discharge faster. An equivalent rating source like say a 2.1A USB or charger or power bank improves the battery life and increases the talk time of the charged battery. Every battery has its permissible number of charging, so charging every two minutes because of fake charger is surcharging yourself in the long run

You are the only one that answered the question. I have tried several phones and noticed that although charging via pc takes longer than using your recommended charger. It never spoilt my battery infact after charging it takes long before it drains than using another charger that charges fast. Make sure you use the right usb cord else instead of charging it discharges spoiling your battery.

75 views and no response? Either people are dodging attacks after comments or they just don't wanna talk. Anyway here's my opinion; without going into much geeky stuff about the amperes your phone takes to charge, chargers generate specific level of power ranging from 250mA(or below) to 2.4A (or above). So the higher it is the faster it charges (mind you if your battery capacity is not really up to 3000mah and above or uses fast charging [which still applies to 3000mah & above], I would say it's a waste of effort buying a charger above 1A cos it won't take above that level or probably doesn't need it). That being said laptop USB port are designed specifically for data transfer: flash drive, memory card (card reader) or direct connection with a device and although, it will be charging simultaneously but it won't be charging really fast at all except it's a Nokia Torchlight.
One thing (that I noticed) with smartphone is when you use lower power-generating source (a.k.a charger heads) to charge it tends to weaken the battery life and in this case pc is one of those slow-charging source. Let me point out too that the type of USB used plays a major role too: we have the silver pin and gold pin, the latter is the best to use.

I say conclusively that any smartphone that has above 3000mah battery capacity needs it "follow-come" charger or good power banks (some might argue that power banks does the same harm as pc, I will reserve my comment on that) or a good charger that meets the same specs of the "follow-come" or slightly above wouldn't do any harm; let's say if you have 1.8A charger, getting 2.1A isn't bad (so far the battery capacity needs it (I say again 3000mah above, especially for 5000mah like homtom HT50 has and 6000mah like the Partner mobile ps 2 or the gretel GT6000. Pls don't think itel is among them o, I'm yet to see any of their devices with high ba3 capacity that has fast charging feature)

So the summary of my essay grin is "Yes, charging a fone with laptop or desktop weakens ba3 (or spoil if you prefer that term).

I rest my case
You've said everything. #Thumbs

Re: Does Charging A Phone With A Laptop Spoil The Phone's Battery by wesleyfranklin(m): 4:46am On Oct 19, 2017
It does affect both the laptop and the phone. This was the trend those days when blackberry was the order of the day but if you did observe, most blackberry ba3s were just 1200mah and most laptops come with 4000mah. Now, most smartphones now range from 3000 to 6000+mah so imagine using your 4000mah laptop ba3 to charge it!!!!! This coupled with the fact that there is a recommended standard power source for charging has its cumulative toll on both the laptop and the phone.

If you judge it in that way, ur Father's battery will last 10times ur own because ur father don't press his phone as you do... He might only use his own to make and receive calls but you will make calls, receive calls, take selfie, whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Imo, Ping, Telegram, Wechat, Nairaland... Nice try but wrong.

Charging on smartphones is regulated by a software charge controller. It may under supply where the amperage is low, such as trickle charging on a pc usb port. But overcharge is not possible due to software governor.

That's why fastcharge chargers don't fast-charge other phones not designed for fast charging.

Chargers dont just send power directly from charger to battery. A micro controller is the mediator.

To start with, phones, Laptops and some other accessories are electronics devices which are most times impose little or no deficiencies on one another.

I have never experienced a phone battery being destroyed using the USB port to charge it.

Rather, i would advice individual checks the USB cord used in the process. Some USB cords are malfunctioning, not strong enough which i believe might be the cause.

Furthermore, i will advice that when charging with your USB cord, do not boot your system with your phone connected to it (in fact in mass storage)-this will affect either your phone or the system in particular.

Conclusively, it is more safer to charge with your system(electronic power to electronic power) than the unstable or frequency varying electrical power source (electrical power to a rectified or (electrical to electronic converted power) power) we are mostly acquainted with except you can guarantee the stability or non varying of the power output you use.
