Or maybe that list is in alphabetical order? And actually represents priorities for the next 2 years and not the present?

So the sea axel 2600 is the prefered bidder though it actual set up is not known yet. Still at over 100m and 2600 tons it will Handel the sea conditions better than the strike craft. They will be great for anti piracy, poaching and smuggling.

My weapons list is a 76mm, 35mm DPG, 2 20mm supper Rouge, 4 12.7mm supper Rouge and 16 Umkhonto missliels. As the heaviest option light weight would be 20mm supper Rouge 4 12.7mm Rouge.

Mate, go read the report again. Denel has not sold anything substantial in the 2016/17 period to Kenya, Mozambique, Pakistan, Turkey.

The list is the top 10 countries which Denel will prioritise its marketing in the next 2 years.

Probably the government doesn't want you to know how much they spend on the purchases

I thought the OPV was shit-canned until further notice

Fvcking self-service stains. How easy would it be to do what the italians do and get the funding from the Department of Economic Development. Thus, negating the need to bring DoD before Treasury and spending political capital on arms purchases (ie: Some hippy gay making a guns v butter argument on national TV).

Like, seriously, holy fvck dude how easy is this argument to make? To anyone: Treasury, Political opponents, filthy hippies, doubt-full voters etc
- This investment helps us transition away from a resource based economy towards a manufacturing based economy
- This investment gives us an opportunity for skills development
- This investment brings back Durbans manufacturing base
- This investment will inject much needed capital into South Africa's steel industry (which is getting raped by cheap asian steel being dumped in our markets)
- This investment is not even being made on a weapon, the platform is purely defensive and is not even geared towards warfare - its geared towards enforcement
- This investment will grow capacity that will allow South Africa to corner the growing African ship-building market.
- This investment will keep money in the South African economy
- This investment will help us protect our environment
- This investment will help us curb human trafficking
- This investment will help us curb drug smuggling
- This investment etc etc etc etc

Pic kinda related, most aesthetic OPV in the world (someone please fund it!)

See, in South Africa everyone has an opinion on everything. Even student unions have a say about military affairs. The issue here is that the current administration appoints people with no experience in PR, when they have to go on TV and justify (or explain) the purchase of simply things like OPVs they simply avoid the media THEN social movements end up being more vocal.

There's a million reasons why you simply need to purchase the OPVs ASAP, Operation Phakisa is one of them. The Asians are literally stealing fish worth millions of dollars in our oceans just because we can't patrol efficiently.

My solution would be simple, we need a black budget that covers new military purchases THEN attach them to economic growth. When the economy grows outside the expected projection, those funds generated through taxes are immediately allocated to the Black Budget. Eg, the economy grew by some 1% this year unexpectedly , that's the total GDP of Gabon and Botswana immediately added to our GDP. The state tax collected on that growth is enough to cover the purchases of new equipment without it going public.

Change of administration could bring us good news. Money is always available, we're about to allocate R1 trillion to new nuclear reactors which is totally the opposite what the CSIR suggested on their research. Imagine what a position of it could do in our underfunded military.

To kick this off, the MI-38 has been completely ruled out for reasons I shan't go into.

Capacity isn't the problem; performance is -especially in "hot and high" conditions prevalent in the greater SADC region. This is not an idle boast; Denel Aviation has extensive experience on the Mi-17 as an MRO and they're seriously underwhelmed by its utility in the African space.
We'd only buy them because they're cheap - if our financial situation hasn't changed by 2025 - but we'd also have to expend resources on modifying them to our Oryx performance standards.

BTW, that's not a dissing statement: it's simply a factual statement that says this is the performance required of a medium-lift helicopter by the SAAF; helicopter A & B either meet that standard or they do not, their provenance notwithstanding.

The argument at JOps currently goes along these lines: Black Hawk, Hip and Super Cougar are the only realistic replacements for Oryx, seeing we threw away our option at a domestic solution (the Turkish TAI program was removed early on when it transpired the entire thing was based on working off an Agusta platform - on this thread alone you'd know we Saffers don't think highly of Agusta tongue), and capacity is a settled issue. Let's then examine which meet our performance requirements and standards. [at some point it was determined that the Airbus Super Cougar was simply too expensive, though it was the preferred choice on performance considerations alone).

Black Hawk and Hip will be cheaper, utilising various funding mechanisms, though performance lags. Then the question becomes:
what are the modification and lifetime costs to bring them up to our performance standard consistently over the entire life cycle?
Empirically, Black Hawk won - as do most western products over East when we in SA consider armaments we're not currently making ourselves - though I'm told Airbus is busy preparing a better proposal so the Super Cougar may be back in the running.

Interesting! Meant to be the -17 successor it carries 3 tons more than the H225 and is like 60% of the FAC. Admittedly these are paper stats which I couldn't post last night, Idkw. Can you add smth more substantial even if only in broad terms to avoid compromising yourself? The -38 also has new engines.

The keywords here are "hot and high" performance. See, South Africa is a mid to high altitude country where most of its inland altitude is hundreds to thousands of metres above sea level. That affects helicopter flight dramatically because what could be eg 5km up in sky from the German surface is just 3km up in the sky from South Africa inland surface so helicopters have to fly even higher to compensate for that and that's where the European helicopters fail.

Air Force general intrigued by Textron Scorpion’s surveillance potential

Fresh off demonstration flights last month that could serve as a springboard to a new defense contract competition for light attack aircraft, Gen. Mike Holmes, head of Air Combat Command, says the Wichita-built Textron Scorpion could also be a fit for different potential competition in the future.

According to a report from Defense News, the U.S. Air Force is also now considering similar demonstration flights as were done for the attack planes to evaluate cost-effective options for surveillance aircraft.

After what it showed in the recent attack demonstration flights, Holmes said this week at the Air Force Association’s annual conference, the Scorpion has “intriguing” potential for that type of mission.

“If you look at some of the airplanes we flew, there are airplanes that have kind of been built with great big internal bays where you could carry a whole variety of sensors, so it’s an intriguing possibility for Scorpion,” Holmes said.

If such a light ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) demonstration program was eventually launched, it would be open to other industry competitors.

But it could give the Scorpion another shot at securing the launch order that has eluded the aircraft in the four years since it was officially announced.

And that could be especially important as the Beechcraft AT-6 and the A-29 Super Tucano built by partners Sierra Nevada Corp. and Embraer are said to be the closest fit to the requirements for the attack aircraft program.

Wherever it might fit best, including potential foreign military sales, the lack of customers so far isn’t keeping some industry observers from holding a bullish view of the Scorpion.

Defense analyst Loren Thompson of the Lexington Institute in Virginia told the WBJ in July that he still believes the Scorpion could “be a real sleeper in terms of sales potential.”

The reason why we seem very choosy on helicopters is because not many helicopters can fly high as the Oryx.

- Orxy : 7,162 m
- Mi38 : 5,900 m
- Pave Hawk :4,267 m
- Super Puma : 5,180 m

Just subtract 2000m from the given figures then you'll see how high they'll be flying off the South African ground.

A Master Warrant officer ( name withheld) has been promoted on the advice of the commanding officer of his battalion ( Name of battalion withheld) and approved by the Nigerian Army Council due to his exceptional leadership and bravery to Captain. This is highly unusual in the Nigerian Army first being a Non-Commissioned officer, the time when this happened you would have to go back to the Civil War era, I have deliberately kept his name a secret because of what happened to the notoriety of LT. COL Abu Ali.
