Sorry man. In 2017 earning $100,000 is nothing in most places in America. After tax you will be left with just $68,000 to spend for the year. What is the average rent for a two bedroom in a place where upper class earner are supposed to live (Boston, Chicago, New York city, California etc)? That alone will cost you over $20,000- $28,000 on rent alone.
You have actually lost the plot now...how much should one be earning in USA to be 'something' in your opinion?

Please i need advise on this issue.

I own somebusinesses in Nigeria and am very comfortable.

I earn over 400k plus monthly from those businesses am less than 28years but sm people are advising me to sell out those assets then use the money to travel abroad canada to be precise to go and hustle that canada is the bomb now. But deep down in my heart i dont want to travel out. I know a friend that has being in the Uk for years the guy is just average.

I am quite confused i wouldnt like to make a mistake.
85% of Nigerians in Canada will run back to Nigeria if you give them a job of 400k monthly. Dont believe the hype. Expand your business and within 10 yrs every single embassy will beg you to come and collect their visa for free

Except u are into IT or the tech industry....
Abeg stay in naija and continue the good work u've started....
God will continue to bless ur hustle....
400k in naija is fat and less than 1% of Nigerians below 30 yrs earn such....
That's my piece of advice...

I don't have the strength and time to be analysing 100k income for someone who is not even earning in dollars and has no understanding of the cost of living abroad....
I know people who earn such and I know what they've done with money both in USA and naija...
I'm not here to convince u, cos I know u are a cynic....

They are not living the American dream. Even doctors who earn over $200,000 carry a heavy burden of student loans they will need to pay for a 30yrs duration. $100,000 before tax cant buy you the American dream
Re: Lies Of Nigerians Living In America by chrisjohn234: 1:27am On Dec 02, 2017
I just read numerous articles on google and can comfortably say $100,000 in present day America is indeed not that much to be classify as upper middle class. Though miles better than what the average American makes

If they truly live in America they won't even dare debate me. What is the average cost of taking care of a child? A couple with two kids bringing in a combine salary of $200,000 is just average if you want to truly live the american dream. Taking care of a child will cost between $12,000 to $14,000 annually and that is just for one kid. Below is a link so you understand what is going on in the US. Nigerians living there are liars, I have never seen a single Nigerian who went to the US. and made it. They are all wage slaves.

You want to ruin your life by destroying the comfortable life you have in Nigeria .Listen to those advice at your peril

Making 400k monthly is upper middle class in Nigeria. He got no business traveling out of the country unless for visit. Even someone earning 250k has no business traveling out. They should grow on the job. But for those making less than 100k it is really hard. They should see traveling as an option

The United States of America is one big fat lie. Have you noticed how most Nigerians when they newly arrive the US. they start uploading pictures every minute on social media? Then after a couple of months they all go into hiding and you don't hear from them again. That is the period when the reality starts hitting them hard and their eyes are being opened that America is not much different from Nigeria and in most cases even much harder to make it than in Nigeria. This is a circle they all go through and it usually end with them deceiving themselves instead of admitting they made a huge mistake they would rather live and die with their lies

Sir, you’ve got it wrong.

A single person earning $100k/year, before (and after) taxes, lives a comfortable life anywhere in the US. Even a family of 3 can survive on that amount.

Also, some states like Florida and Texas have no state income taxes, so people get to keep even more of their money.

A household of 4 (parents with two dependents) will have a lower tax rate than a single person with no dependents. For eg the tax bill for the family of 4 earning a gross income of $100k would be around $20-25k; while the single person may have the $35k tax bill.

So, several factors determine whether a gross income of $100k would be adequate for anyone.

The funniest and most expensive joke I have heard from Nigerians doing menial jobs in the US. and earning between $1,500- $2,000, is claiming that they are richer than bank managers in Nigeria. I guess they make their money in America while spending it in Nigeria. This stupid joke need to stop. A Nigerian doing menial job in the US. at best can be compare to someone receiving 80,000 Monthly in Nigeria in purchasing power. A Nigerian doing odd jobs for 10 yrs will still be paying rent while a 10 yrs bank manager would have long built two to three houses with a lucrative investment. Nigerians in America need to stop converting currencies because it is clearly stated that if you earn $12,000 annually in America you are living in poverty
In reality... How many bank managers have 2 to 3 houses in 10 years? Also how many bankers get promoted to manger in 10years... If you said staff of multinationals (esp. Oil companies), then I would totally agree. My opinion is if you are a hustler, intelligent and you work smart you can make it anywhere in the world. All countries have their pros and cons.

Until they update their data people earning over $100,000 will still be considered as upper middle class but when you actually speak to those earning that much they tell you blankly they don't feel they are upper middle class. It is the truth from New York to Montana. A upper middle class shouldn't carry a lot of credit card and should be capable of paying over 70% of their expensive in cash from their pocket, but most don't even have $100,000 saved up after decades on the job. They can't afford to pay tuition fees for their college bound kids and co-sign the student loan papers with them.

$100,000 is enough to live comfortably but certainly not upper middle class and you have to be extremely mindful of your expenses. Most people earning $100,000 still live on credit and some even have low credit score. I know many who even got their homes foreclosed on. What you didn't mention is the journey to earn that much. A typical doctor, lawyer or engineer making over $100,000 carries more than $150,000 student loans debts which they will still struggle to pay back. The total debt of becoming a doctor in 2017 America should even exceed $400,000.

Best post so far then those in diaspora should stop saying Nigeria is dead, instead they should bring their money down here and invest heavily. Nigeria has a bright future and her citizens will make sure of that.
