You don't have better health facilities...wheather secondary health or primary..UNTH is the best teaching hospital in Nigeria, plus several other private hospitals scattered all over Igbo land...The only virology center in Nigeria outside Abuja is in Ebonyi state..

Ondo and Ibadan airports are dead while Enugu and Owerri airports are the 4th and 5th busiest in the country in addition to portharcourt and asaba airport which are just a stone throw from them.

In sports, you don't have better stadiums than the east and infact the east has more stadiums and football and sports in generally in the east and southsouth is the most active and competitive in the country with strong local leagues and academies, that is why we dominate the NPL

A state like anambra has over four or even five stadiums some of which are privately built and are in the villages which improves their local football
Outside Lagos, Owerri and portharcourt has the most soccer academy in Nigeria with KANU nwakwo, taiye Taiwo and the rest establishing their academy in Owerri, which has produced the likes of Kelechi iheanacho and Ndidi,all playing in top clubs in Europe...name one from your afonja.

Again, you dont have better universities than the East, if you like swallow your afonja or Nigeria statistics, that is your headache. Eastern schools still produces some of the best brains the west wish to have, neither have your number of universities transformed your slums to heaven. worse is that your number of university graduates and professors have not found solution your self inflected disease of laziness,urban delapidation, poverty, dirtiness and poor hygiene rather they have turned to high grammar blowing Zombies who are only intersted in monthly salary hence no contribution to national or regional growth, Not to also ignore the number of private universities spring up in the east, which is encouraging anyways...

All in all, You are still lagging behind..if igbos or eastern region had the adavntagea you had during and after the civil war, I can say it with all confidence that you guys will not even be fit to clean our shoes...

Seventy-four days into the industrial action called by the Association of Resident Doctors, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Teaching Hospital Ogbomoso, the aggrieved doctors have accused the management of the hospital of insincerity following their failure to resolve the crisis. Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, LAUTECH, has suspended its four months strike.
The doctors also alleged that they are being paid only 28 percent of their salaries since January 2016. In a press statement made available to Vanguard and jointly signed by the President, Dr. Sebastine Oiwoh and the Secretary, Dr Ayobami Alabi, [b]they alleged that their members are being owed 12 months-old salaries. Since the day one of them that keeps showing otunba subomi balogun's house as their house and it happened that I disgraced him to stop posting otunba's house, I don't take them serious again. Repeating one picture 15times, showing burial event and music concert and tagged it development is a slap on human race. If any Yoruba post such rubbish as development, I will personality disgrace him or her.

Meanwhile anambra is building another airport making the number of airports in the Southeast 3 and igboland 5 if you add asaba and portharcourt airports..ironically they are all in top ten most active airports in Nigeria

The small east that is smaller than oyo has twk of the busiest airports and planing to add another one, while the big for nothing Southwest cannot sustain the two they have outside Lagos....Ssshame

When people were using Nigeria and Singapore as example is how size mean nothing if it is not productive, I think south west is the better description of unproductivity.

Ignorance is a disease, the same osun you think in your mind that it can't manage lautech with you is managing uniosun fine and well. The issue is, oyo wants to take lautech cos ogbomoso is under oyo. Reason the govt of akala built world class teaching hospital in ogbomoso. But osun did not agree to leave the school, they told oyo to go and build their own state school that they can't leave lautech for them. Do you know how many state schools ondo is managing.

v I thank my friend and Junior brother,
Mr. Sam Nda-Isiah, for inviting me to
speak at this important forum on what
to do to reverse de-industrialization in
Northern Nigerian. When the invitation
was extended to me, I asked of the
topic I am to speak on and I was not
given any. All my brother wanted me to
do at this Conference is to set the tone
for the experts invited to do justice to
the topic under discussion. My role
therefore is not to talk of how
industrialists are to access funds from
the banking system nor even to talk on
such general issues as the importance
of finance to industrialization:

v I have been invited to contextually put
Northern Nigeria amongst other regions
in Nigeria and could easily have
compared Northern economy and its
Southern Counterpart. I have chosen
not to go this route because, I want us
all to see that geography, history and
the Obasanjo administration and its
reform agenda have created four (4)
fairly distinct economies in Nigerian.
We as Northerners need to appreciate
where our economy currently stands
amongst other economies in Nigeria so
as to appreciate the kind of race we
have to run if we are to remain relevant
in Nigeria.

v On the basis of ownership and/or
control of resources that make for
economic development, post-Obasanjo
Nigeria in terms of strength could easily
be categorized into 4 economies as
follows:
a) South West Economy;
b) South East plus Delta
Economy;
c) Northern Economy; and
d) South South minus Delta
Economy

v The four economies mentioned above
are fairly distinct with each growing at
its own pace. The South Western
economy is growing at a faster rate
than all followed by South East plus
Delta economy whilst those of the
North and South South minus Delta
could at best be described as
stagnant. A simple analysis of these
four economies is given below:-

a) South West Economy
South Western Nigeria with
a Land Mass of 76,852
square kilometres and
population of 25.2 million
today owns and/or control
60% of the nation’s
industrial capacity, 44% of
banking assets, 67% of
insurance assets and is
house to the nation’s three
deep sea ports of Apapa,
Tin Can Island and Roro;
the busiest international
airport of Ikeja, three
thermal stations of Egbin,
Papalanto and Omotosho.

Today, its three major
industrial estates of Agbara,
Ikeja and Otta are all linked
to gas under the West
African gas pipeline plan
and piping of gas is ongoing
from Otta to Abeokuta.
Added to these, the South
Western population today is
the most educated as
western education came
through there and education
as a resource was
democratized since the
early sixties. Geographical
location, democratization of
western education,
availability of resources
enhanced in last 9 years
and some empowerment
during the Obasanjo
administration have
collectively enabled the
South Western economy to
rank as first of the four
economies in Nigeria.

Today, the South West as a
region can boast of having
a defined growing middle
class and is perceived to
have at least 20,000 of its
indigenes with net worth of
over N100m each. Take it
out of Nigeria, the South
West economy with is
defined growing middle
class and resources, will be
one of the fastest growing
economies in the world.

b) The South-East plus Delta
The South Easterners plus
their cousins across the
Onitsha bridge control
commerce in all parts of
Nigeria and are thus largely
employed. The region has
clusters of small scale
industries around Nnewi and
Aba. The banking
consolidation has assisted
these people to now have
ownership and or control of
over 50% of Nigerian
banking assets. It also
controls 21% of the nation’s
insurance assets and 20%
of industrial assets. With
this development, this
region which has not had a
commanding control over
Nigerian economy will
certainly begin to do that
now. Commercial activities
backed by finance can only
grow the economy of
South-East plus Delta.

The growing strength of
financial muscle of this
region has been aptly
demonstrated by the recent
licensing of Micro Finance
Banks. Of the over 600
MFBs recently licensed by
the Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN), Anambra State alone
had 74 whilst Yobe State
had 1, Sokoto 5, Zamfara 6,
etc. There exists also in
this economy a middle
class which will now grow
itself in number and
financial muscle and will
almost certainly grow its
economy inclusive
particularly of small and
medium sized industrial
base.

c) The Northern Economy
The North which
geographically is 719,435
Square Kilometers or 79%
of Nigeria’s landmass and
has 75 million or 53.6% of
Nigeria’s population has its
economy as a consequence
of various reforms
introduced, been totally
grounded. Today, the North
has ownership and/or
control of no more than 3%
of banking assets and 2% of
insurance assets and 10%
of industrial assets. True,
the North has a huge
landmass but this has
remained under exploited
due to jettisoning of time
tested policies of price
support (as a result of
abolishing of marketing
boards without putting
alternatives) and
abandonment of extension
services and quality
control.

Also, the North has
a huge population but the
population has remained
largely uneducated and/or
half educated because of
near failure of governance
in certain States and Local
Governments. Currently its
most distinguishing
characteristic is grinding
poverty. Recent poverty
statistics indicate that the
poverty level of States in
the North has been on the
increase in the last 9 years
and reached over 80%. Its
two commercial and
industrial nerve centers
(Kano and Kaduna) have
seen industrial capacity
utilization decline to an all
time low of less than 10%.

The textile, automobile and
beverages companies that
thrived so impressively in
the 1970s and 1980s have
collapsed rendering
thousands jobless.
Although hydroelectricity is
generated at Kainji Dam
and in lesser quantities at
Shiroro Gorge and at
several smaller sites, the
entire mechanisms are run
on very obsolete equipment
and the performance is
consequently very epileptic
and unsuitable for
meaningful economic
activity.

d) The South South minus
Delta
The South South is largely in
the creeks of Niger Delta and
has therefore a small land
mass of only 48,321 square
kilometers and is populated
by 13.6 Million people.
Notwithstanding the fact that
it is house to Nigerian Oil
wealth, this region exclusive
of oil company activities like
the North is also backward
economically. It controls no
more than 3% of banking
assets, 10% of insurance
assets and no more than 10%
of industrial assets on
account of oil related
industries that the indigenes
do not control. Furthermore,
its overstretched land mass
has suffered considerable
degradation and its aquatic
life destroyed.

As a region,
its people and economy are
worst off than the North as it
lacks fresh environment,
water and even good air to
breath.

Education: Why South-West and North should be worried

[b]Last week, the 2015 West African Senior School Certificate of Education result was released. The Punch chose to publish the story with an attention-grabbing headline: “Again, South-East leads in the WASSCE performance chart.” The report showed that Abia State dethroned Anambra. The states were ranked according to the percentage that had a minimum of five credits, including in English Language and Mathematics.

But the surprise in the report was that almost like in 2014, no South-West state except Lagos was on the top 10 of the chart. The top 10 states were the five South-East states, four South-South states and Lagos: 1st – Abia (63.94 per cent), 2nd – Anambra (61.18 per cent), 3rd – Edo, 4th – Rivers, 5th – Imo, 6th – Lagos, 7th – Bayelsa, 8th – Delta, 9th – Enugu, and 10th – Ebonyi. Ekiti was 11th; Ondo was 13th; Ogun was 19th; Oyo was 26th; while Osun was 29th. In 2014, the top 10 states were similar: Anambra (65.92 per cent), Abia (58.52 per cent), Edo (57.82 per cent), Bayelsa (52.83 per cent), Rivers (52.78 per cent), Enugu (51.91 per cent), Lagos (45.66 per cent), Imo (40.64 per cent), Delta (40.12 per cent), Kaduna (36.12 per cent). Ebonyi was 11th with 36.05 per cent.

For 2014, the states with the least performance were Northern states: They were Yobe (36th), Zamfara (35th), Jigawa (34th), Gombe (33rd), Katsina (32nd), Kebbi (31st) Bauchi (30th), and Sokoto (29th). In 2013, the result was similar: 28th – Katsina (10.45 per cent), 29th – Adamawa (8.75 per cent), 30th – Jigawa (7.47 per cent), 31st – Sokoto (7.12 per cent), 32nd – Zamfara (6.65 per cent), 33rd – Kebbi (6.30 per cent), 34th – Gombe (5.68 per cent), 35th – Bauchi (5.28 per cent), and 36th – Yobe (4.85 per cent).

Someone from the South-East or South-South could see it as a reason for chest-thumping, but for me, it portends grave danger. Why do I say so? I will explain shortly.[/b]

Those who had not been following the trend in education could dismiss this as a flash in the pan. But it is not so. I have followed the trend since the late 1980s. From 1996 when the late military dictator, Sani Abacha, created 36 states out of Nigeria, the three states that have been producing the highest number of applicants in the examination organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board have been Imo, Anambra and Delta.

The Guardian of August 26, 1999, page 31, had some statistics about the 1999 UTME examination. It showed that the six states with the highest number of applications were: Imo (44,274), Delta (36,375), Anambra (34,206), Ogun (33,375), Edo (29,057), and Osun (22,950). Conversely, the states that produced the least number of candidates were all Northern states: Borno (1,572), Katsina (1,054), Taraba (882), Sokoto (782), Kebbi (794), and Yobe (535). The Registrar of JAMB then, Prof. Bello Ahmad Salim, lamented the poor showing of the Northern states, noting that the 65,000 applications from the 19 states of the North were just 20,726 higher than the number of applications from only Imo State. If Imo and Delta states’ applications were combined, that would amount to 80,649 applications: over 15,000 higher than the applications from the 19 states of the North.

In 2007, The Guardian newspaper of June 1, page 3, published the results of the 2007 University Matriculation Examination. The top six states with the highest number of candidates were Imo (93,065), Anambra (64,689), Delta (61,580), Edo (57,754), Akwa Ibom (47,928), and Ogun (47,227). The last six were: Kebbi (4,682), Sokoto (3,925), Taraba (3,832), Zamfara (2,904), Jigawa (2,541), and Yobe (2,516).

For the 2012 results released by JAMB and published by Vanguard of March 31, the top five states were: Imo (123,865), Delta (88,876), Anambra (84,204), Osun (73,935), Oyo (71,272). The least five states were: Jigawa (11,529), Kebbi (7,364), Yobe (6,389), Zamfara (5,713), and Sokoto (5,664).

In the Unity School admission of 2013, the states that got the highest cut-off marks were: Anambra – Male (139) Female (139); Imo – Male (138) Female (138); Enugu – Male (134) Female (134); Lagos – Male (133) Female (133); Delta – Male (131) Female (131); Ogun – Male(131) Female(131); Abia – Male (130) Female (130). The states that got the lowest cut-off scores were: Zamfara – Male (four) Female (two); Yobe – Male (two) Female (27); Taraba – Male (three) Female (11); Sokoto – Male (nine) Female (13); Kebbi – Male (nine) Female (20); Bauchi – Male (35) Female (35).

So, for those from the South-West and North who may give the excuse of the South-East and South-South states getting these results by the help of “special centres,” it is a case of trying to hide behind a finger. Instructively, the South-West, which was the first to receive Western education, and was ahead in education, has lost its place in education in Nigeria. Something is killing the interest of the South-West children in education. The six South-West states need to see this as an emergency that transcends party affiliation. This scenario is a source of danger because the South-East and South-West have been counter forces to each other. Whatever feat the South-West produces, the South-East counters it, and vice versa. We can see it in the literary feats of Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka, the football feats of Shooting Stars and Rangers, the political feats of Nnamdi Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo, the academic feats of University of Nigeria, Nsukka and University of Ife, Ile-Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), and so on. This healthy rivalry enhances stability, peace and growth in the nation.

But if this downward trend continues, in future, that balancing of forces between the South-West and the South-East will no longer exist. And given that the indigenes of the South-East and the South-South dwell in large numbers in the South-West, a time will come when the South-West could feel angry that the indigenes of the South-East and South-South are taking over positions that the South-West indigenes should occupy in the South-West. This may cause problems as witnessed in the xenophobic attacks in South Africa last year. So, it is in the interest of all that the South-West stage a come-back in education.

The case of the North is scarier. Many commentators keep quiet about this worrisome issue because of political correctness, but only someone who loves you can tell you that you have mouth odour. It is dangerous that there are 10 million youths in the North with no formal education.

The rise of Boko Haram has worsened a bad situation in the North. The few who want to go to school are scared away by this unconscionable terrorist sect.

There are those who have erroneously said that the lack of interest in education in the North is caused by religion (Islam). But there are many nations with high Islamic population even in West Africa that embraced education. Furthermore, Northern states like Taraba, Plateau and Benue have a predominantly Christian population. Yet, there is a low interest in education there.
