I am building two new concrete ponds and i am afraid that i might have a problem draining the water. So i need a soakerway to drain water. Pls anybody who has experience on this type of pond can assist. Thanks

God bless you sir Robonski, i want to use it as a pond for keeping fish, but instead of pumping water into it directly from bore-hole, i will run-off used water from the other ponds through an open gutter every 2-3days. The issue is that the land is locked on every side with no access to drainage and since the new ponds are big i.e 10*12*5 each, i am looking for a way to drain the water without flooding the land.

why dont you do analysis on you water. Becos catfish is fresh water specie and a salty water might mitigate their growth if it doesn't kill them at the onset.

I have 12 concrete ponds sitting on a 1000sq metres of land and occupying 1200 catfishes per pond. That's about 14,000 fishes in total. My fishes are currently 12weeks old from spawning and weigh average of 180Grams per fish. As of now, I feed them with 4-6MM blue crown feed and they currently consume 8bags of 15kg blur crown feed.

My main issue is that I experience about 6 - 8 mortalities daily. My review of the situation shows that it is due to cannibalism because I see only the skul of the dead fishes. The fishes are well sorted and have adequate space to move around.

Please I need guidance on how to reduce the mortality. Thanks.

Prices towards d Xmas & into d New Year has been #750-800/Kg & there's been some forms of scrambling. Seems scarcity is beginning to set in.

Maybe your water is brackish or hard, the treatment you ll do shouldn't be that expensive, maybe btw 100k to 150k. It's not going to be the reverse osmosis treatment that is very expensive (like 1.5m to 2m) but try to get a test kit that can give you temperature, EC and pH. If every of those is favorable to your fish I don't think you need any treatment. The test kit is around 15k or less.

EC is electrical conductivity, the test kit can be gotten anywhere they are selling plumbing materials or chemicals. I am just saying the treatment you ll do to make your water OK for the fishes shouldn't be expensive. Ordinary filtering could solve it.

You can as well consult a lab for comprehensive analysis. They ll check for the physical, chemical and biological properties in the water. And as well specify the treatment required if any

Cannibalism is normal in catfish farming but 6-8 mortality DAILY is much, u need to do more of sorting and take note of their feeding style.

You cant flush water all at once considering the size of the ponds, its gonna flood the whole area.. I will advice you do more flow thru i.e water coming in and going out at the same time in a very low rate.. it will avoid releasing large volume of water all at once.. do flow thru daily..

We didn't know as JJC, long story short after spending about 200k in feeding them for 6months, she has sold almost everything and it is less than 150k at 600naira per kg ( farm bulk buyers). Please I want to know if the 600naira isn't too small or it is standard price( location is Asaba delta state) and how can she identify good juveniles when stocking again

Madam i have to be frank with you. Your sister approach and your statement shows that you wanted to shift blame, and am afraid this would not lead to any improvement unless you change that perception.

Firstly, the notion of blaming seed on poor production is now becoming irritating, because where ever there is loss you see people start complaining about the seed despite the fact that they do not do what is required to attain maximum growth.

Though you didnt shed more light on the operation but i will advice you to rather look on other major factors that determine growth of a catfish
1. Quality and quantity of water
2. Stocking density
3. Dissolved oxygen
4. Temperature
5. Feed/feeding quality
6. Ammonia control
7. Disease control
8. Sorting
9. Feed waste control
10. Seed

Having the best of seed and ignoring other parameters will only lead to disaster, so take time take stock of all mentioned parameters and improve on all of them rather than concentrate only on seed.

first I no be madam am a dude, it is not blame passing, it was one of her staff that later admitted it indirectly, my dad has two ponds and my sister two, same feeding water and all other conditions. Just 2months and the juvenile my dad stocked from another source is almost the size of my sisters own at 4months.. Thanks for your response, the price you stated is it for retail or wholesale price because they are calculated per kg for wholesale and almost all the different buyers contacted wont go beyond 600/kg ( more like they decided it in a union meeting)
