Is It Safe To Top-up Engine Oil When The Level Has Gone Low? by SLOVFO(m): 8:21pm On Mar 01, 2018
Gurus,
I need advice. I changed the engine oil of my Toyota Camry three months ago. I hardly drive the car for long distances. My ODO meter reads 980 . But I noticed that the oil level has dropped close to the minimum level mark. Is it safe for me to top up the oil with a fresh one? Or must I change the entire oil and filter.

It's very safe. That engine is known for excessive oil consumption, just ensure the engine is cold before topping, preferably first thing in the morning.

Not sure the morning option is a must but it shouldn't have covered long distance let alone be too hot when the oil is to be poured! !!

Isn't it too early for the newly installed toks engine to be "shorting" oil?

My toks Honda EOD 05 never short oil till I will service and change it oil after covering 5000 miles for 2 years.

I just started noticing short of oil recently which do trigger check engine to show up and then go after a while. Upon topping it up with 1 litre of Mobil XHP which is the oil that I normally use, the check engine turned off itself and it never came back again.

Low oil level could trigger check engine in some cars! !!

You are a very careless person ,how do you drive a car for 2yrs without servicing ? How much doesbit cost to service and how much is the cost of an engine..you know like yourself ..

5000miles is too high for when using mobil xhp, should be 3000miles or 3 months which ever comes 1st

air-fuel ratio has nothing to do with running 20w50 on an ivtec engine for 5k miles

If everything about your engine is good and working fine; 5000 miles servicing is not bad. Funny enough, it doesn't short oil and the oil is always still fresh after the 5k miles that another car can still use it.

It is now that you are talking for this air to fuel ratio point that you've raised.

I replaced the catalytic converter and 02 sensors to high quality ones that I imported myself from USA. They were over 2 times costlier than the ones sold in Nigeria at the time; the converter cost me N80,000 when it was sold in Nigeria for N30,000. The sensors were over N30,000 each

We are only advising you, 5000miles is too high to run mobil xhp but Its your car and your money, you are free to use palm oil if you wish.. Engine issue don't happen overnight, Oil shortage is a sign of more to come if you don't repent. Enjoy your day

Your Odometer reads 980 or 98000 ?
If the shortage is that much you got a problem . Take it for a leakage chk

This is the first time after 2 years that I will notice that.

I will observe it till it is due time for servicing and will as well tell my mechanic to check for possible cause. Thanks for that piece of advice! !!

I'm not saying that it has something to do with it. I'm just trying to tell you that near perfect air-fuel ratio mixing will flow with the 5,000 miles servicing! !!

Lol! I was not sleeping but dreaming.

Trust me; the cause of the oil shortage which just started is being observed, will be checked and corrected in the next servicing.
I have quite good maintenance sense, skill and attitude! !!

See it images below. Does it look like a 2 years old car lacking adequate maintenance?

Oil shortage is caused by leakage..leakage could be internal or external..
For external leakage: you will see oil under/around the engine bay
For internal leaks: Engine oil finds it way to the combustion chamber and is burnt with air-fuel mixture, Most times the cheapest fix for internal leakage is to use a higher viscosity like 20w-50(mobil xhp) but you are already using that.

Clean ride i must say, but the fact that you use mobil xhp(20W-50) instead of manufacturer recommended 5W-20 is "lacking adequate maintenance" and then running the mineral 20W-50 for 5000miles. Anyways am sure your Oyingbo mechanic who recommended Mobil xhp for 5000 miles knows better than Honda.

Hahahaha!

It was that oil that I saw readily available and trusted at the moment I wanted to service it for the first time. I wanted to change to recommended one early enough but I couldn't see trusted and readily available ones so I sticked to the one I've been using. I was even ready to part away with any amount to get the quality one of the recommended oil but there was no headway.

Don't as well forget that you can't compare abroad's weather condition with ours. Hence, my choice of oil might be working fine in Nigeria it has been; I've travelled long journeys severally without any form of breakdown.

Bros don't go there oh..So many places in the abroad is hotter than Nigeria and they still use manufacturer recommenced oil and Mobil 5W-20 or 30 is available at the same mobil station where you buy Mobil XHP, Honda motor oil 5w-20 has always been available at Oyingbo.
And just because a car has not broken down does't not mean it is running at best form.

This wan you dey talk about abroad weather, am sure you and your mechanic would have removed your car thermostat and wired your cooling fans to run immediately you start the car

NB: Please stick to your mobil XHP, Its too late to change back since your car is already burning or leaking mobil XHP, any 5W-20 oil will burn or leak faster
